Happy Thanksgiving!  Everyday this week, some of my favorite bloggers will be sharing some of their worst reads with us in the first Turkey Tales event.

TurkeyTales.jpg Turkey Tales picture by AllthingsUF

I did my first ever guest blog for the final blogger in our Turkey Tales event for her annual The Thirteen Wicked Days of Christmas event.  I’m talking about the delightfully dishy Natasha from Wicked Little Pixie.   Although we fall on opposite sides of the Twilight debate (I so did not need to know the extent of Twilight merchandizing that exists), we almost always agree on the books we hate.  Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments for another chance at the giveaway.  See below.

by Natasha from Wicked Little Pixie

You know how it starts out; the book has so much promise, you’re excited to read it. Then all hell breaks loose & you have no idea what happened. Where did that train derail in my head?!My turkey read was a first in a few ways, one it was the first YA that freaked me out (so not in a good way) and two, the first time I had an author comment on a negative review.

Lets jump right into it shall we? Hope you have your flack jackets on….

Cat the Vamp follows 18 year old Catherine (Cat) Taylor through finding out she is a vampire after her grandmother’s death and moving to a castle to “learn” the ways of a vampire. What I liked about Christina Martine’s take on vampires is that they can go out in the sun and the only difference they have from humans is that they are born with less energy which requires them to drink small amounts of blood. Cat ends up meeting Morgan, who she has been dreaming about and finds out he’s also a vampire.

Okay, so great idea right? Yeah…

I was not happy with this book, for a young adult novel it just didn’t sit well with me. A few times I actually felt disturbed by some of the things that happened and thought to myself, I wouldn’t want my nieces reading this at all. I do believe this book should come with a warning and maybe should be targeted at much older young adults.

And that my friends, is when it all went downhill….

There is a scene where Cat and her boyfriend Morgan, cut their names into each other’s flesh with a razor blade and drink from the wounds, when another character (Amber) finds out, she thinks it’s “cool”. Cutting is a BIG problem with YA’s right now, so I don’t make light of things like that. There are constant mentions to smoking cigarettes and drinking, though these characters are 18 they act like 15 year olds.

There’s a scene where Cat drinks a lot of Morgan’s blood and he faints, both characters again make light of the situation. Cat and Morgan also have unprotected sex, there is little mention other than Cat is happy when she gets her period and isn’t pregnant. There are plenty sex scenes, which again I do not feel is appropriate for a YA novel.

I am so not a prude, honestly! But whoa, this was just a bit too much for me. I still am horrified and I read this in February! *shudders*

At one point, “high” on blood they attack a human blood donor. When their Teacher River finds out, there are little consequences to Cat and Morgan for their actions. Once again, they attack another person and escape for a few days. And again, little consequences for their actions even if they are getting completely out of control. For a “school” that’s supposed to be teaching them, they seem to do more hanging out and partying then anything else.

When Cat is told by her parents she is a vampire, she accepts it right away, no outburst or questions asked. That to me seemed an odd reaction for a teenager to have, especially when they drop her off at this castle and she basically has no other contact with them.

So I gave it 1.5 out of 5 stars. Thinking about it now, I can’t believe I kept reading. Like I said my first low star review AND the first time an author commented on a negative review. I have to tell you my first reaction to the author commenting on my blog was stomach rendering acid reflux tinged with guilt. Why do we always feel so guilty when we write a review that’s not positive?

After reading the authors comment, I was not a happy camper. She came and tried to justify the things I did not like in the book. I’m sorry; I didn’t like your book. It was the first time I took notes whilst reviewing a book, I had three pages!! I can’t love everything, I wish I could.

Since then I have learned a lot about reviewing, we can’t love every book & we shouldn’t feel guilty about it! So what?! We reviewers read A LOT; it’s not feasible that we love every single book that we read. I also know, it’s not wise to debate an author about a book you didn’t enjoy. I just refuse to respond to any author who is angry because I didn’t like their book.

But please don’t tell me your fantasy novel is educating kids. It did educate me; it was a book I wouldn’t want my future children going anywhere near.

Thanks so much Natasha!  And check back tomorrow for the giveaway winners announcement.

  1. I agree that sex scenes in YA novels are a bit over the top. I don't mind if its insinuated because well whats a good book without some romance right? But I do not think it is appropriate to graphically mention in a YA leave that for the Adult books. Or like you said put some sort of warning on it.
Thank you so much for sharing your choice

  6. Wow! I've never heard of this book and quite frankly as much as I enjoy a vampire story, this doesn't sound like anything I would enjoy. Don't feel bad for the review you gave, you would have felt worse if you hadn't been honest about it. And quite frankly, it doesn't sound like a YA book.

  7. Promoting cutting in YA is just dangerous. I work with teens and would not want to put a book like this on my classroom shelves! And, the author commenting on your review is just obnoxious. I can imagine that it must be difficult to read a negative review, but that is par for the course. (Especially if the review is not malicious, but well-written and thoughtful.)

Thanks for warning us away from this book! Happy turkey day!

I don't know why they do that; you're entitled to your own opinion of the book, and if there are elements of the book she has to explain to you, she's the one who didn't get her point across.

  21. Wow, this is one of the harshest reviews I ever read. I could never imagine having the author commenting, maybe others found it interesting, and she wrote it so naturally there'd be need to defend your book. It all depends, but I guess the book was too vivid. I'm in the "YA" range and I've never heard of this book, but maybe I'm lucky to? Thank you for giving your v. honest opinion, Natasha!

  22. Geez, that sounds like it shouldn't be marketed towards young adults at all. I'm glad you reviewed it honestly, because sometimes I feel like reviewers hold back on saying anything negative about books they didn't care for, just because they want authors to do interviews and guest posts on their blogs.

I believe that it was inappropriate to actually have characters in a YA book cutting themselves having unprotected sex, and from what I'm hearing no proper adult supervision. Its also said that the author couldn't take that review and use it to become better at telling stories. It's really sad too because the story sounds as if it could have been a really good one had it been executed a better way. But thanks for the review I'm sorry that you had to suffer through it all though.

  26. That Sure as heck doesn't sound like YA, unless it is 17 to 19 year olds. I mean face it, teens have sex, portraying it as unprotected UNLESS they are somehow immune b/c they are vamps/were, whatever, is irresponsible and event then kids think they are immortal. Perhaps editors & publishers should hold writers to higher standards to get that label. Kids have so much discretionary income now, they are a huge market. But we don't sell lots of things to teens because they are dangerous or bad for them and society feels they lack the judgment to make those decisions for themselves.

I am in no way saying that we should ban these books, but teens are incredibly persuasible; we now know that the judgment, and decision-making areas of the brain aren't yet done. They follow peers and idols.

Further, we are all responsible for the welfare of the next generation.

That is an incredibly well thought out review.
I think we feel guilty about bad reviews b/c

    1. As women we are societally programmed to feel guilt.
    2. I have been taken down by other bloggers who say if you don't like a book just don't review it.
    3. We are sympathetic people who don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

You don't have to verbally assault the author, and you did not. We are not here to be Gordon Ramsey or Simon Cowell. To take the sting off I try very hard to find what is good in the book too.

The only time a writer commented on a negative review I wrote they thanked me which was very gracious of her.

Its a huge issue and my friend was in therapy to get help. Thankfully, she got help and she doesn't harm herself anymore.

  43. It definitely seems unrealistic even given the fact that it is about vampires. There are realistic charcateristics and reactions that you still want to see especially when reading about teenagers dealing with life changing realizations, sex, and cutting. 49. There's been a lot of talk about whether authors should comment on reviews. Personally, I think that authors have to know that some people won't like their work and if they can't deal with that, they shouldn't publish it in the first place. I always appreciate it when a blogger shares their real opinion, rather than "playing nice", especially when the reason they are doing so is because they feel that the book isn't appropriate for a certain age level. Thanks for your honesty.

  50. Wow, I haven't heard of this book before.
Like you said, it could be good, the premise is there, but the execution is just that.."execution", right?

I know not all books are supposed to "preach", that can feel "pretentious" at times, but writing things like that sometimes feels like condoning them.
I am sure the author didn't mean it that way, though.
Still, a warning beforehand would have been ideal, so that readers knew what to expect.

  51. I agree with previous comments - you shouldn't feel guilty after writing a negative review. One of the most important thing when you publish your opinion is being honest to yourself, but also to your readers :).

About the book - its description doesn't sound so unappealing, but in my opinion, the biggest strike for this title was the wrong rating. If it had been addressed to the right readers, we would look at this book differently. Because when we see YA, we expect something different than from a book rated for adults.

  52. It sounds like this book had the potential to be good, but I'm not a big fan of random sex and violence (well random isn't the word I was looking for, bit it's close enough.) Fighting and action is okay as long as it's defensive and not offensive, and I like romance- but not casual teen sex. It sends out a very bad message.

  70. Wow. When I first heard about this book I though it sounded like it could be good. Have to admit I am glad I never got it now. It just isnt sounding like something I would like. And I really read all across the paranormal genre so its not that some of the stuff in there would bother me a lot if it was an adult oriented book. Some of it would still, yes but really its all about the combo of it in one story or with one set of characters and the age range its marketed towards. I have read quite a few adult books that would be great for YA too, quite a few more that YA shouldnt read. And some YA that definitely shouldnt be YA. Sometimes I really dont understand the marketers. Thanks for sharing about this one.

If it is well written maybe it would sell to an adult audience but it needs to be marked and marketed as that.

This is the whole reason we read reviews, to find out information about a book as you have given us in your comments.

So don't look on this as a negative review, it was an informative one as a good review should be.

    Thanks

  75. Sounds like this probably should have just been an adult book.

  76. As reviewers we should be impartial and can't always give a good review - esepcially if you feel strongly about a book as you obviously did about this one!

Thanks for giving me fair warning about this book!

  78. Natasha, I completely agree with you. All the reasons, details you listed make me wonder what they are doing in a YA novel, which besides the role of being entertaining for teens should also eductae them and set some kind of example. This book not only did not do that but was especially harmful to teens.

  79. I agree that this book shouldn't be marketed as YA. I happy that you don't feel guilty anymore for writing a negative review. Nobody likes every book they read.

  80. Oh my God. I was shocked with the cutting thing. If vampires really do exist, I guess it would be fun for them because it means blood bonding of some sort. But for the readers who could be 12-17, I guess it isn't good. Most teens are anchored to do stuff that are labelled as cool. It's a dangerous thing to make use of that theme in YA, especially in that context. And the absence of control and punishment could also promote bad behavior.

Thanks for sharing! This sounds more like an adult novel than a YA novel.

  81. This book was definitely a turkey tale for me too! So over the top, and lots of things that don't belong in YA..

  82. Wow, I wonder how that was even labeled as YA.

  83. It definitely sounds like this one has been mistakenly placed in the YA category and I think some of the themes of this one are not appropriate for YA readers. I agree that cutting is huge problem and should not be written about lightly, whether from a vampire aspect or any other. Totally a turkey tale...
