Description:

Emma Lost can still remember the day she woke up in the back of a VW van after her famous thousand years' snooze - the one that inspired the Sleeping Beauty myth. Emma knows it's no fairy tale - she's the real Sleeping Beauty, trying to hide her magical powers and swearing off kissing strange men for the rest of her life. Of course, most men follow her around like lovesick puppies...except for Michael Found, her gorgeous boss.

The rational, logical Mr. Found doesn't believe her theories about such things as Fates and fairies and magic, and he's determined to expose her as a fraud. But Emma knows for sure the magic truly does exist, and she's going to give Michael a lesson he'll never forget - even if it means breaking her vow of not kissing men.

Nothing like a dude in sweatpants trying to act casual to say “Happily Ever After”.  The colors are over the top cutesy, this cover needs something that is actually cute to pull it off.  He’s hot and hiding his hands… which is worrisome, not cute. Yep, the colors totally kill this.  Way too bright and childish.

Luc Cain’s Guide to Hell
by

Lisa Desrochers

Personal Demons (Personal Demons, #1)Hello, my name is Luc Cain, and I’ll be your tour guide this evening. It’s been a while since I was asked to do tours, but we’re a little short-handed in Acquisitions at the moment, so please bear with me.

First, before you step through the Gates, be sure to read the back of your tour ticket carefully. The disclaimer is self-explanatory, but just so there are no misunderstandings, I’ll spell it out: You’re all here of your own volition. There are no guarantees as to your safety, well-being or whether you’ll even be allowed to leave. And under no circumstances will there be any refunds—of your money or your soul, should we decide to cash in while you’re here. You understand that it saves us significant amounts of time and resources to just take you while you’re already here versus having to track you down later.

You’re all still here? Daring souls. I like that.

So, the first thing you’ll notice are the high stone walls, which are really intended to keep the condemned in, because, other than the occasional interloper, keeping people out of Hell isn’t generally an issue. And, really, what could be more fun than an interloper?

As we approach the iron Gates of Hell you’ll notice the sign. Having been Dante’s muse, I’m particularly proud of it. Though, on occasion, Minos, the Gatekeeper, gets it in his head to change things up a little, so at times it will read “Have a nice day!” or something equally droll. But it’s tour day, so he’s left the traditional “Abandon hope all ye who enter here.”

As we step through the gates, please notice the pungent smell of seared flesh mingled with decay, earth, and brimstone. Also notice the big demon with the ranseur. Minos at the Gates is just for show. Rhenorian is the real head of security. This is a guided tour and you are expected to remain with your group and your guide, yours truly, throughout. Rhen takes his job very seriously, and stragglers will be…penalized.

Just inside the Gates, we have the Inferno. Hear the shrieks of agony and pleas for mercy issue from barely discernable shapes writhing within the eternal flames. Those, my friends, are the souls of the damned.

Looks like fun, don’t you think?

As we continue south, skirting the Fiery Pit, the screeches echoing from these high walls are of a different sort altogether. Demons who have stepped out of line or come up short in the eyes of management scream from their depths. This, on the other hand, doesn’t sound like so much fun.

Original Sin (Personal Demons, #2)If you look to the right as we pass the Pit, we have the Lake of Fire, the orange and red roiling molten lake swirling around the large crags of brimstone, pointing like accusing fingers at Heaven. Its accompanying light show—flickering scarlet and indigo with blue and white flame eruptions, is like Hell’s fireworks. In the middle of the Lake is the glossy black mass of Pandemonium, perched on Flame Island. Its high castle walls and jagged spires tower over all of Hell, and from them, King Lucifer rules over his legions.

As we move past Pandemonium, along the cragged banks of the southern edge of the Lake of Fire, we reach my sanctuary: The southernmost tip of the Abyss, where the Lake meets the Walls of Hell, and the river Styx flows in from the south.

And, here ends our tour. If you can find your way back to the Gates, and get past Rhenorian, you might be allowed to leave.

Best of luck.

Or not.

Five copies of ORIGINAL SIN by Lisa Desrochers

Original Sin (Personal Demons, #2)
Available on July 5, 2011 from Tor Books

Description:

Luc Cain was born and raised in Hell, but he isn't feeling as demonic as usual lately—thanks to Frannie Cavanaugh and the unique power she never realized she had. But you can't desert Hell without consequences, and suddenly Frannie and Luc find themselves targeted by the same demons who used to be Luc's allies.

Left with few options, Frannie and Luc accept the protection of Heaven and one of its most powerful angels, Gabe. Unfortunately, Luc isn't the only one affected by Frannie, and it isn't long before Gabe realizes that being around her is too...tempting. Rather than risk losing his wings, he leaves Frannie and Luc under the protection of her recently-acquired guardian angel.

Which would be fine, but Gabe is barely out the door before an assortment of demons appears—and they're not leaving without dragging Luc back to Hell with them. Hell won't give up and Heaven won't give in. Frannie's guardian exercises all the power he has to keep them away, but the demons are willing to hurt anyone close to Frannie in order to get what they want. It will take everything she has and then some to stay out of Hell's grasp.

And not everyone will get out of it alive.

    Review

I want to preface this review by saying that I loved PERSONAL DEMONS, the first book in this series.  I thought it was deeply romantic and I loved the dichotomy between angel Gabe and demon Luc and how their love for Frannie manifested itself so differently depending on their nature.  I even loved how torn Frannie was between them.  But ORIGINAL SIN is like a completely different animal, one that I think may need to be put down.

The first half of ORIGINAL SIN is a good, if not great, follow up to PERSONAL DEMONS.  Frannie, Luc, and Gabe are still trapped in a rather unconventional love triangle. Frannie has chosen Luc, but part of her still longs for Gabe.  Both guys love Frannie, but think—for different reasons—that she’s better off with the other guy.  Added into the mix this time is Frannie’s twin brother turned guardian angel Matt.  He’s been assigned to protect her from the demons who still want to tag her soul for Hell.

The POVs shift from Luc to Frannie to Matt and in the beginning this works.  Matt even gets his own potential romance and has to struggle with what he may loose—his wings—if he pursues it.  The same highs and lows from the first book carry over at first.  The romantic elements are still strong as is the writing, but the other female characters are likewise still embarrassingly catty and in full blown slut mode 24/7.

But in the second half of the book, the tone, the plot, and the characters all shift into something unsettling and ugly.  There are a number of ‘ick’ moments one in particular involving a girl having sex with a father, son, and nearly with a daughter from the same family.  A number of situations that could be construed as rape.  And several other ugly sexual situations involving teenagers.  The sexual content in ORIGINAL SIN is never graphic but it is pervasive both in description and dialogue with several crude innuendos.  It’s a far cry from the very sexy, but still romantic vibe from PERSONAL DEMONS.

I also lost my patience with Frannie.  She waffles from Luc to Gabe and back again one too many times for my taste.  Her behavior with Gabe is especially rankling as he tells her constantly that if she pursues him sexually, he’ll loose his wings but she is literally on him every second they are alone reaching for the button on his jeans until he has to plead with her to stop.  And then just pages later it’s almost the exact situation with Luc. How am I supposed to respect a character like that?

I’m so disappointed by how much of a departure ORIGINAL SIN is from PERSONAL DEMONS.  I still enjoyed Lisa’s expressive writing and the first half of this book is good with the same passionate romance that made the debut a favorite from last year, it’s the second half that I wish I could unread. The third book in the Personal Demons series is called HELLBENT and will be published in May 2012.  I hope it’s more like this first book than this follow-up.

PERSONAL DEMONS by Lisa Desrochers is being published on September 14th 2010 by Tor Teen. It’s the latest paranormal YA title to follow Fallen and Hush, Hush by featuring angels, and dare I say it’s the best one yet?  If you read my review a couple days ago, you already know I loved this book, so of course I had to invite Lisa for an interview.  Don’t forget to check out the international giveaway details below.

    Interview

ATUF: One girl caught between the demon who wants to damn her, and the angel who might fall trying to save her.  That is one deliciously wicked premise.  How did you come up with it?

imageLD: If someone possessed a skill that the king of Hell wanted, it only stands to reason that Heaven would want to keep him from getting it. The whole idea for Personal Demons started with a name: Lucifer Cain. It popped into my head one day and I started writing from Luc’s perspective. But, as I started writing and the plot began to unfold (I don’t outline) I realized that Frannie would be valuable to both sides. Enter Gabe.

ATUF: According to your blog, the next book in the Personal Demons series is called Original Sin (July 2011), followed by the third book, Hellbent (May 2012).  Are you planning on extending the series beyond three books?  Are you working on any other projects that can we look forwarding to reading soon?

LD: I have a few projects floating around my hard drive, but the Personal Demons trilogy has kept me pretty busy. Whether it extents beyond three books is really up to my publisher. I’m writing book three now as if it will be the last in the series.

ATUF: What are some of your favorite titles/authors in the paranormal genres?

image LD: My very favorite author is Melissa Marr. I love her character development and world building. My agent described Original Sin as “fearless.” I had Ink Exchange in my head as I was writing. Every time I was afraid something might be over the top, I asked myself, “What would Melissa Marr do?” My other favorites are more straight fantasy and contemporary.

ATUF: Cliff Neilson is one of my favorite cover artists (his illustrations for Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series are amazing) and his art for PERSONAL DEMONS is another stunner.  Initially, I worried that the characters looked too adult for a YA title, but having read the book, I think the more mature look, especially for the guys, is spot on.  What are your thoughts on the cover? Did you have any impute in the overall design?

image LD: Authors generally get very little input into the cover design of their books. I was asked for my opinion and if I had any preferences, but in the end, the design is dictated by powers far greater than the author. I think everyone agrees that the models are a little older than we would have liked, but overall, I’m happy with the design. I LOVE Gabe and his wings. <3

ATUF: Where did you come up with the brilliant idea for sins to have different fragrances?  How did you decide which scents were which sins and are there any sin scents that didn’t make the book?

LD: It was sort of a cop out, really. I read an article that said writers needed to utilize all five senses in their writing. This was the easiest way I could figure to work smell into the book. Ginger as lust was the first one to pop into my head. Ginger just seems exotic to me, so it fit. Twitter, family and friends helped with some of the others. So far everything’s made the book. I’ve got a few new ones in Original Sin.

ATUF: Some of my favorite scenes in PERSONAL DEMONS involved Luc and Gabe trying to one-up each other with Frannie, specifically when Luc tries to arose Frannie’s jealousy by taking out her friend only to watch as Gabe invites himself over for a study date.  Can you tell us about your favorite scene in PERSONAL DEMONS?

LD: Some of my favorites are definitely the scenes between Luc and Gabe. They really know how to push each other’s buttons. (I guess that happens when you’ve known someone for seven millennia.) My favorite is probably their first real exchange after Frannie meets Gabe at a party. When he shows up at school the following Monday, Luc’s less that thrilled. And the fun of it was writing from Luc’s perspective, so we get his inside take on the exchange. It’s fun writing from inside a demon’s head. Course, I also like the kissing scenes, and the scene where Frannie flips a demon over her head. Those were fun to write too. :p

ATUF: If PERSONAL DEMONS were ever made into a movie, who would your dream or, to keep things interesting, nightmare cast be?

LD: I just had to come up with actors for the film guy at my agency. Here’s who I decided on. Frannie: Chloe Mortez, Luc: Logan Lerman, Gabe: Lucas Till. They’re all perfect, really, so send some good energy out there that they’ll agree to do it! =)

    image image image

My nightmare cast? I could go all sorts of directions with this, so I’ll keep it simple. Frannie: Paris Hilton, Luc: Edward Cullen (demons don’t sparkle), Gabe: Homer Simpson.

    image image image

ATUF: Angels are definitely the hot new focus in paranormal fiction, especially YA. How did you set your angels apart from the others and why do you think they are so popular?

LD: When I wrote Personal Demons, I had no idea angels would trend. I’ve only read a few of the YA “angel” books out there and the difference between mine and theirs is that mine’s really more of a demon book. My demon isn’t a fallen angel, so I’ve used the mythology and lore differently than the others have. My angel is not fallen (though that could change ;p), and he’s one of Heaven’s highest echelon.

ATUF: I’m always a sucker for a good love triangle, especially when the stakes are as high as they are in PERSONAL DEMONS. I loved how hard Luc and Gabe had to fight not to fight with each other when they had to protect Frannie.  Is there any hope for a friendship between them in the future?

LD: They’ll never be pals, but it’s possible that they could develop a mutual respect. Both will do anything for Frannie, which may mean that they need to figure out a way to work together. Or, if it gets too hard, one of them might just leave… (that’s an Original Sin teaser ;p)

ATUF: If PERSONAL DEMONS was a Frankenstein book compiled from elements of other books, what would some of those other books be?

LD: Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, Sarah Dessen’s This Lullaby, and two that didn’t exist when I was writing Personal Demons: Maggie Steifvater’s Shiver and Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush.

    PERSONAL DEMONS by Lisa Desrochers

*This title will be released on September 14th*

    Description:

Frannie Cavanaugh has always been a bit of a loner. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance, even her closest friends. That is, until Luc Cain enrolls in her school. He's hot, sarcastic, and dangerous—and Frannie can't seem to stay away.

What she doesn't know is that Luc is on a mission. Because Frannie isn't exactly ordinary. She possesses a skill so unique that the king of Hell himself has taken notice, and he's sent Luc to claim Frannie's soul. It should be easy: All he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come.

Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and he's just started making progress when the angel Gabriel shows up. Gabe will do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for, and his angelic charm might just be enough to keep Frannie on the right path.

It isn't long before Luc and Gabe find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie's soul. But if Luc fails to win her over, there will be Hell to pay . . . for all of them.

    Book Description

If you had to choose between Heaven and Hell, which would it be?
    Are you sure about that...?

Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She has spent years keeping everyone at a distance---even her closest friends---and it seems as if her senior year is going to be more of the same . . . until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can’t seem to stay away from him.

What she doesn’t know is that Luc is on a mission. He’s been sent from Hell itself to claim Frannie’s soul. It should be easy---all he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance. But he has to work fast, because if the infernals are after her, the celestials can’t be far behind. And sure enough, it’s not long before the angel Gabriel shows up, willing to do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for. It isn’t long before they find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie’s soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay . . . for all of them.

     Review

Book 1 in The Personal Demons Series

What’s not to love in a story about a girl torn between two guys: the angel who would give up his wings to save her, and the demon is bound to damn her?  Both are fighting against their natures as the demon begins to wonder what the sweetest sin is after all, and the angel comes dangerously close to falling himself.  PERSONAL DEMONS is wickedly romantic, divinely compelling, and devilishly good.

If there’s a Hell on Earth, it’s high school. And if there’s anyone distinctly qualified to make that statement, it would be me. – First line from PERSONAL DEMONS.

The world of angels and demons in PERSONAL DEMONS adds some interesting new facets to the traditional mythology, including the goal of angels and demons to ‘tag’ souls for Heaven or Hell after which they can begin to coerce a human’s will.  My favorite addition, however, is that demons can actually smell sin:

The bell rings as I make my way out the door into the now bustling halls, and the scents of the sea of teenage humanity hit me in waves. There’s the tangy citrus of fear, the bitter garlic of hate, the anise of envy, and ginger—lust. Lots of potential. - PERSONAL DEMONS

It adds a sensory experience to the story and gives another layer of enjoyment to the demons in the midst of sin.  Add that to the excellent writing which resonates perfectly with the age of the protagonists without coming across as juvenile in any way, and we get a story that delivers on almost every level.

The almost being Frannie’s two girlfriends who were pretty over the top catty in that stereotypical boy crazy way, specifically Taylor.  As well as the slut patrol who seemed to be made up of every single girl at Haden High school all of whom practically went into heat whenever Luc and Gabe showed up.  It was a little over the top for me.

Overall, If you liked Hush, Hush and Fallen, you are going to love PERSONAL DEMONS. It blends first love, first lust, and war for one girl’s soul all into one excellent paranormal YA debut.  The next book in the Personal Demons series is called Original Sin and will be released in July 2011.  It’s too bad it’s not available to pre-order yet.

Sexual Content: Kissing. References to sex. A few scenes of mild sensuality.

    My Rating (out of 5):
