Review

THE UNFORGIVEN opens like a mid-series book; characters have complex and painful pasts, there are rivalries and vendettas, all of which were introduced through summaries or asides or context clues.  I’d applaud this book for being easy to jump into, but when I circled back to find the start of the series I found... THE UNFORGIVEN.

While part of me is still in denial (looking for prequel novellas or books on another imprint), when I  judge THE UNFORGIVEN as a true first in the series, the opening leaves me disappointed.  None of the characters, other than Maddie, are introduced in a way that feels like a true "first time introduction".  A few allusions to past heartbreaks and events don’t bother me when they’re clear, and I know I can go back and read about them myself, but THE UNFORGIVEN throws all racial conflicts, current romantic relationships, the nature of several dead comrades, and some bizarrely polygamous family ties into the past tense with very little explanation.  I never felt lost, plot-wise, but I did feel emotionally disconnected from the characters.

Once the introduction was out of the way and I was into current events, I ran into another disconnect.  Magic is the driving factor for every romantic relationship that is featured (other than references to dead baby-mamas).  While this device is a classic, and works well in any number of urban fantasy novels, the characters were not well developed enough for it to work for me in THE UNFORGIVEN.  Cade and Maddie don’t get much interaction beyond reacting to Watcher pheromones and fighting demons.  When two new characters (and here I mean “new” in the “I don’t know you, I still need a reason to care about you” sense) are climbing all over each other because of “magical needs”, it reads like a technical exercise without emotion or motivation.

Even without much depth, Cade and Maddie relationship could have been hot on it’s own. However, when the "forced to feel this way" element was paired with instances of attempted rape it gave the whole book a much darker feel than I'd like. Lilith's emotionally exploited, incestuous flashbacks were heart-wrenching, and I got tense every time I saw the italics that indicated another one.  It is this element that takes THE UNFORGIVEN from an acceptable if forgettable paranormal romance to something I’d rather avoid in the future.  If you like tortured alpha males and relationships that are magically ordained, there is a lot to enjoy in THE UNFORGIVEN.  However, I think I’ll continue to get my paranormal romance with a dash of crazy (and a boatload of humor) over with The Immortals After Dark.

Review

With her lovely writing, Victoria Schwab has created a vivid, almost claustrophobic little world of myth and magic and secrets on the moors.  There is no promise of a happily ever after for everyone, but THE NEAR WITCH is all the more affecting for these little disappointments.  Lexi is a strong, confident young woman making decisions that will impact the rest of her life, and I cheered along with her on every page.

Lexi lives in that limbo of being at home under adults’ thumb, but feeling the need to act on her own convictions.  Even more impressive, she navigates this quintessential teenage time period without any of the hysteria or melodrama that so often accompanies it.  I adored the details of her relationship with her little sister Wren, and applauded the ferocity that has her sneaking out into the darkness each night to solve a mystery the adults around her can’t.  The hero, Cole, reminded me of Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl, a little fey and a little damaged (but no where near enough of a dandy), and like HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, it is the girl who rescues her prince as much as anything else.

THE NEAR WITCH has the mist and menace of a great ghost story, melded with the struggle of a young woman coming of age.  Without shattering the bonds of the small town in which she lives, Lexi finds a place to grow into her own.  I don't know if the Near Witch received half so much justice as she deserved, but at least Lexi fights her way to some measure of happiness.

Getting around MIDCITY:

I would recommend walking or driving on the normal streets, but by all means, avoid driving on the Tangle! The Tangle is a multi-clover turnpike that is the most insane, twisted-up, dangerous, maddening thing ever constructed! But it is also the fastest way to get around the city. I drive on it every day and get really upset. Apparently some secrets of the Tangle are revealed in the anthology, WILD & STEAMY but hell if I’m going to read that thing!

Eating out IN MIDCITY:

Mongolian Delites $$

You can find kebabs of many kinds at the Mongolian Delites. This restaurant has full bar, which is handy if the traffic on the Tangle has DRIVEN YOU CRAZY!  Also, there is a mirror behind the bar and it’s satisfying to throw things at it and break it. If you’re like me, you could also try going into the kitchen and breaking plates, a relaxing activity when Midcity gets on your NERVES!  Depending on when you go, you may or may not find a certain tortured mastermind trapped there who happens to be a very very good friend of mine.

Ciappos $$$$$

A fancy underground restaurant where the elite go to eat, and some of them are jerks. Overpriced. I should go trash that place.

SHOPPING IN MIDCITY:

Downtown

The downtown shopping scene is pretty sad. Even a guy who rarely shops can see that. Let me paint you the scene as you walk down the sidewalk: 1970’s mannequins wearing faded and dusty outfits that involve shoulder pads and giant buttons. Ripped pantyhose. Sometimes the mannequins don’t even have their wigs on straight.

North Midcity Bazaar

Slightly better than downtown, the bazaar is in an old warehouse that’s so big, it’s like an open bazaar feeling, with lots of stands, and mostly imported stuff, since they don’t make anything in Midcity anymore worth buying.

Le Toile Dress Shop

My friend and fellow disillusionist Justine used to work there. It’s in South Midcity, and is very fancy. Who can afford that stuff?

SAFETY:

Midcity is a safe place to vacation if you take precautions!

Before you go: Invest in a nice helmet and a pair of shoes you feel comfortable wearing while breaking into a sprint You’ll want to wear that helmet at all times in case you fall under telekinetic attack. Depending on the season, you might not want to go outside at night, due to the sleepwalking cannibals under Stuart the Dream Invader’s control.

Hint: Wearing a suit of armor will help foil most cannibalistic sleepwalkers - when they try to bite into your stomach and encounter metal, they will move on to easier prey. You might also try walking in a group of ten or more, armed with large caliber weapons.

Another hint: No matter what the cabbies tell you, don’t venture into the area underneath the Tangle interchange. This is a two-square-mile expanse of wasteland that makes the Mad Max wasteland look like Disneyworld.

One last hint: To guard against telekinetic pickpockets, pin all loose cash inside your pockets, or chain your wallet to your belt.

Wait, another hint: When you walk outside, get an annoying song running incessantly in your head. That will foil most telepaths trying to profit off secret information, like bank passwords.

Another hint: If you come in contact with the Midcity River water, wash the affected area immediately with a mixture of bleach and hydrochloric acid. And please do not throw lit matches into the river.

EXCITING MIDCITY!

Midcity is a great place to vacation if you know where to go and come prepared. There is always something happening in exciting Midcity!
