Cover Art Coverage: 20 New Titles!

See all the covers now after the jump! (Yay Julia for rebuilding the post)

This week several familiar series get new additions and Jeri Smith-Ready’s Shade trilogy gets a complete series make-over.  Things get a little meta as we comment on a cover that features a blurb from All Things Urban Fantasy (the kind of surprise that just makes our day), and my feelings about Photo-shopped tattoos finally spin out of control.  Not that I’m against them wholesale, but I think I like them better when the cover artist doesn’t even try to pretend they’re real.  Other than some wicked Gena Showalter butterflys and the gorgeous ink on AFTERLIGHT, I’m having a hard time coming up with a good example.  Can anyone suggest a series that “does tatts right”?

Click on the Fictitious Delicious link to read Smith-Ready’s reaction to the cover redesign, I like her breakdown of how Aura grows throughout the series and the “mood” Smith-Ready would like for each cover. I was never a fan of the original covers, so I’m thrilled that this amazing series is finally getting a design overhaul. Love the bright yellow colors & just the overall smoky effect.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
So what if his back looks a little disfigured, check out the blurb from Angie Fox: “The sensuality of Sherrilyn Kenyon and the intensity of Patricia Briggs.” Yes please!  I have the first book on my TBR pile and it just got bumped to the top.

Passion by Lauren Kate

Series: Fallen #3
Date/Publisher: June 14th 2011 by Delacorte Books for Young Reader
Cover Artist: Fernanda Brussi Goncalves
Cover Source: Lauren Kate Books

Author Comments:
I’ve been waiting for a long time to show off how gorgeous this is!…I love the dramatic bursts of color, the intensity and desolation of the backdrop, and of course, the dress. It’s also the perfect book to show just a hint of Luce’s face. I am counting down the days until I can share the book with you, but in the meantime, I hope you love the cover as much as I do.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
This is crazy colorful compared to the previous books…I kinda wish it was more monotone.  Still beautiful though. Tynga's reviews found some extra cover goodies for this one including the original art from Fernanda (click to enlarge)

This cover is trying so hard to be everything.  The overall effect is cheesy.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
A new adult series from De la Cruz spins-off from her YA Blue Bloods series.  The pink leaves reflected in her eyes are beautiful.

Witches of East End (The Beauchamp Family, #1)
Description:

The two novels will follow the lives of the Beauchamp girls, who live in the fictional town of North Hampton, as they struggle to stop an arch nemesis and restore the delicate balance between good and evil. De la Cruz will weave characters from her best-selling Blue Bloods young adult series into this new paranormal series for adults.

Cover art: Lots!

Addicted 2 Novels has the cover for Torment (Fallen, book 2) by Lauren Kate (due out September 2, 2010).  I think it is simply stunning!

image

Sophistikatied Reviews has the cover art for Jealousy (Strange Angels, Book 3) by Lili St. Crow due out July 6, 2010.  The cover looks a bit like a new CW show…but I’ve heard only good things about this series.

image

It’s a good thing Dru Anderson is fast. Because the sucker chasing her isn’t slowing down—and he won’t rest until he has tasted her blood and silenced her heart . . .

Dru’s best friend, Graves, and her strange and handsome savior, Christophe, are ready to help her take on the ultimate evil. But will their battle for Dru’s heart get in the way of her survival?

Pirate Penguin Reads has the cover for Stacey Kade's debut The Ghost and The Goth due out July 6th 2010.  Looks like a romantic comedy movie poster…I’m on the fence with this one.

image

After a close encounter with a bus, Alona Dare goes from homecoming queen to Queen of the Dead. She’s stuck as a ghost in the land of the living with no sign of a “big, bright light” to take her to a better place. To make matters worse, the only person who might be able to help her is Will Killian, a total loser. More than anything, Will wishes he didn’t have the rare ability to communicate with the dead, especially the former mean girl of Groundsboro High. He’s not filling out any volunteer forms to help her cross to the other side, though it would bring him some welcome peace and quiet. Can they get over their mutual distrust—and quasi attraction—to work together? Readers of this spirited paranormal comedy won’t want this odd couple ever to part.

In her newsletter, Rachel Caine revealed the cover for Ghost Town, (Morganville Vampires, book 9).

image

The fragile peace between humans and vampires in Morganville is in trouble, and when Claire takes drastic action, she's put under serious pressure to re-establish the barriers that keep the town residents inside, and wipe the memories of those who leave. But working with her half-crazy vampire boss Myrnin means that things don't always turn out as planned ... and as the people of Morganville begin acting strangely, Claire and her friends must solve the mystery and try to put things right. But one by one, her allies are turning on her ... even the ones she trusts most.

Throwdown Thursday: Angels vs. Vampires

Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing [hosted by The Neverending Shelf] where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. And it is up to YOU to determine the winner!

Last week’s Throwdown asked: In the Blood vs. Night Myst? The verdict by unanimous decision: Night Myst.

Vampires have long been the bread and butter of the paranormal genre.  Everyone from Anne Rice to Stephenie Meyer have thrilled and titillated readers with tales of these fanged fellows.  And while I don’t think vampires are in any real danger of losing their place as fiction’s favorite bad boys, a new breed of paranormal creatures are taking a bite out of the genre in a BIG way: Angels.  Both the Adult and YA markets have picked up on the trend.  Check out the books below and cast your vote.  I personally think Nalini Singh has the right idea; her Guild Hunter series deliver’s both Vampires and Angels. What do you think?  Are Angels the new Vampires?

Angels vs Vampires

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

image For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Fallen by Lauren Kate

imageThere's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.
