Welcome to the second day of Turkey Tales! Everyday this week, some of my favorite bloggers will be sharing some of their worst reads with us in the first Turkey Tales event.

Another blogger is adding her Turkey Tale to the table. Her choice reminds me all too much of my number one turkey tale and the thought of two books out there as repugnant as the one I read actually makes me nauseous. What doesn’t make me nauseous (how’s that for a segue?) is my favorite across the pond blogger: Carolyn from Book Chick City. FYI, that is her real hair color. Be sure to leave a comment if you want to win the giveaway. Details below
Carolyn from Book Chick City
When Abigail asked if I would like to be a part of her Turkey Tales, not only was I very happy to accept, but I instantly knew which book I was going to talk about: 'Beware!' by Richard Laymon.
I read ‘Beware!’ for my All Hallows Eve event, which I run each October, and I pretty much hated it. I love a good horror novel, I’m not easily shocked, I’m not grossed out by oodles of blood, I can withstand high amounts of tension and psychological torment – nothing really gets to me, except this book did…a lot.
The story isn’t bad, it’s quite a good idea actually. The writing isn’t great but I’ve read worse. The characters are a bit flat but it was a short novel and I got what I wanted from them, for the most part, to keep the story alive and moving along at a good pace. But there were a couple of aspects to the story that I hated to the point I wanted to throw the book violently across the room, stomp on it, rip it to shreds; I wanted to burn it to. a. crisp!
Of course I didn’t – I’m a reader who doesn’t usually give up on books, it has been known, but even though this book was absolutely disgusting it was somehow compelling me to read it, it was like it had me in a dark magical spell and I just couldn’t put the book down.
‘Beware’ is a brutal psychological horror where a small town shop is thought to be haunted. People are murdered and cut up into pieces, there are detailed orgies, and lots of repetitive rape – and that was only in the first thirty pages!
The female protagonist is Lacey Allen, a reporter who lives in the small-town. She decides to look into the haunting with a few of the other town folk. Unfortunately, it’s not a ghost they encounter but something much worse.
Meet Hoffman. He’s evil. He’s also one of the most repugnant, vile and deeply offensive characters I have ever come across in fiction. I understand that Laymon wrote him this way on purpose – he’s the villain of the story - and normally I would understand that and just deal with it, but this time I couldn’t as all that evil was directed at women.
Hoffman savagely rapes and bludgeons women to death - his actions and language are just so abhorrent that he had my skin crawling and reading some of the scenes in this book actually had me feeling slightly nauseous. He views women as sexual objects and to use at his whim to free his depraved sexual desires, whether the women are alive, or dead. *shudders*
But it wasn’t just Hoffman that had me wanting to throw this book across the room – it was also Lacey. After such agonizing torture and rape, and while in hiding from Hoffman, she meets Scott.
Now I understand that emotions can be heightened in times of stress but for Lacey to be physically attracted to Scott, to get turned on when he touches her and then to have sex with him just a few days after being raped, when her bruises hadn’t even turned yellow yet, was just too much for me to bear. I mean, really??
This book is full of the typical sexist tropes where women are just sexual playthings - that Lacey could jump straight back into bed with someone was utterly ridiculous. This book affected me in a way that doesn’t usually happen – when I read the last page, the spell was broken and I closed the book with utter relief.
‘Beware’ is without doubt my number one ‘Turkey’ read of the year – be thankful you didn’t read it! ;)
Thanks so much Carolyn! And check back tomorrow for another Turkey Tale from Jackie from Literary Escapism

OY! No way I could read that book! Thanks for the heads up and I'll be steering clear!
ReplyDeletethe_happy_soul @ yahoo.com
Well, it's always great to have a fellow reader give you a heads up, before reading a bad apple.
ReplyDeleteThanks Readaholics Anonymous
wow! Erm...i don't know what to say! It sounds like it should come with a warning. Defo keep away from that!
ReplyDeleteholz_twilight@msn.com
Hi Theresa - At one point I didn't think I could get through it either... it's pretty awful and I would definitely steer clear ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Dana - I wish I had looked up some reviews of this book myself before picking it up. But I have liked a few other Laymon books so I just thought it would be much of the same. It was in a way except for Hoffman!
Hi Holz - Maybe others who read it won't find it so offensive. This is just how the book affected me. Like a said usually I can deal with this kind of horror but this time it just turned my stomach, so I would recommend staying far, far away :)
Wow, I definitely won't be reading that one. Sounds awful!
ReplyDeletedrakeLa90 (at) aol (dot)
I'll definitely steer clear of that book. I find that I either like a Richard Laymon book or can't finish it. There doesn't seem to be any in between for me.
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't start reading it for its cover:D Sexist tropes...nah, thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeletegoldie-mail(AT)web.de
I like a good horror too but then there's a point when you cross a line. And clearly that line was crossed. Thank you for sharing. I don't think I will be reading this book any time soon

Yeah I don't think I will be reading that. I agree with Kristen, it definitely sounds like the line was crossed.

Hi les121 - There were some good bits but completely over shadowed by the bad…
ReplyDeleteHi Sandyg265 - That's how it is with me and this author. Some I've really enjoyed and some not so much, but this was the worst by far! :)
Hi Miss Page-Turner - Mmm I'm not one for sexism either, it makes my blood boil in real life, so I don't want to read about them really. Although there are some books that touch on the subject but are so well written that I can accept it's there, but I may not like it :)
Hi Kristen - I think you've hit the nail on the head… my line was crossed. I suppose that's why I was so offended by it as it was sort of like a shock, not a lot gets to me much any more but this was just yuck! :)
Hi Stacy - I wouldn't advise reading it either, a book to stay away from really :)
Yeah, that books sounds like something I would never read! I don't blame her for hating it.
ReplyDeletestarmetaloak(at)gmail(dot)com
I like your choice of Beware. Thanks.
ReplyDeletedorcontest at gmail dot com
Yes... That book sounds like one I won't be reading. Thanks for the warning.
ReplyDeletecjmfnobrega AT gmail DOT com
This is one book I won't be reading. Number one, I don't like rape storylines, number two, I don't like violence against women in any way shape or form.
ReplyDeleteseriousreader at live dot com
Definitely a book to stay away from. No surprise it was written by a man (who obviously did no background research on rape victims). I read for fun so I stay away from these type of stories lines to begin with.
ReplyDeleteacm05atjuno.com
Sounds frustrating. I wonder if the author intended for the women to be that way, or is just completely oblivious?
ReplyDeleteb(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com
Haven't read it, but I don't think I will.
ReplyDeleteWow...I don't know that I'd be able to sleep after reading something so disturbing. Thanks for taking one for the team.

Wow, this is definitely a book I will not be reading. It sounds absolutely horrific.
ReplyDeleteangela.donner @ gmail.com
I tottaly agree with you , as i read a few books like this one ..Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI Think i'm going to make a list with books i will never read :)
raluk.93 at gmail (dot) com
Thanks for advise on the book. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible book. Like most people, I'm okay with books which deal with sensitive topics like rape and murder, but only if it's realistic. I definitely won't be reading this. Thanks for the heads up.
ReplyDeletek_anon[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk
Nice choice and I know where you are coming from, women as playthings, no thanks

ReplyDeletemusmekipi at gmail dot com
Thanks for the info. I hate wasting my time on an awful book when there are so many good books out there to read.
ReplyDeletejoycefierro@mindspring.com
Thanks for the heads up on this one. I will definitely pass this one over.
ReplyDeletewalarsha(at)gmail(dot)com
Gosh, Beware does not sound good at all. Glad I haven't read it heh.
ReplyDeletejuliecookies(at)gmail.com
I don't know how you managed to finish that! It sounds absolutely horrible. Good thing I don't really like horror anyway.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. I'm not really interested in reading rape scenes. Especially ones with repetitive rape scenes.
ReplyDeletetinaigne[at]yahoo[dot]com
oK, YOU WIN THE TURKEY AWARD! I don't know how you finished it. I cannot read violence - I read to escape the realities of our world. Even though I like paranormal stories with vamps and weres, I think humans are the most dangerous of them all.
ReplyDeletekjovus(at)gmail(dot)com
Does not sound appealing in any way. Thanks for warning me!
ReplyDeleteasianpersonBM@gmail.com
thank you for the heads up on this book..definitely something i wouldnt be interested in reading and i agree with what Bethany C. said i wonder to if he meant to be so malicious towards woman or did it just come out the wrong way...i would like to know a mans point of view...its hard enough to see one rape scene in a book but multiple...i give you props for reading the whole thing and not throwing it across the room like you said haha

That book sounds awful! cherylbaryl@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteHi, Carolyn. I read your review on that one. It doesn't sound good...
ReplyDeletecarianmoonlight at gmail dot com
I write and read horror, but I agree about that one, espeically about the main female character.
ReplyDeletepamelakkinney@verizon.net
OMG *shudders* thank you for warning me off this one. Sexist stereotypes? Really? No thanks!
ReplyDeletespettolij AT gmail DOT com
What a mess! If Abigail bestows a “Turkiest of the Turkeys” title, I’m betting Beware! will win. Ugh. Thanks for sharing to spare the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteOMG it sounds like such a horrible book, thanks for the heads up, no way do I like the sound of it!

I get little goose bumbs of terror just reading about that book. Eek, I don't think I could have made myself read it. Very thankful I've never read this book.
ReplyDeletegoldeneyeddragon@gmail.com
I definitely won't be reading this book. I agree with you that it is ridiculous and sick that she would jump into bed with another man after she has just been raped. I do not like books where rape is a main part, but this book seems to take it to the extreme.
ReplyDeletesmccar1 at hotmail dot com
Thanks for warning us about such a disgusting book. Beware is probably one of the worst, if not the worst I have heard about. I think some male authors get so caught up in their own fantasies, that they don't have a clue as to the psychology of an actual female.
ReplyDeletelinda at gordonvalley dot com
Wow, Thanks for sharing. That is definitely one to stay away from.
ReplyDeletebacchus76 at myself dot com
Thank you for warning, I'm definitely not going to buy it. Although, I would avoid this book thanks to its cover.
ReplyDeleteSmall notice, when I read the text, I didn't see half of it. I don't know if I'm "special", but it was a bit irritating ;).

I would not read this book anyway, because it's not really in my preferences. But, I hate when books are filled with stereotypes about women (or men). It's so unoriginal and uninspiring, not to mention completely offensive and off-putting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your Turkey Tale warning! I'll exercise caution around this book!

moiraethefates(AT)gmail(DOT)com
I don't read horror, so it's pretty unlikely I would have ever picked this one up, but thanks for the warning. The worst kind of book is one that you have a visceral negative reaction to - it just makes you feel dirty for days afterward.
ReplyDeletejen(at)delux(dot)com
Sorry about the spacing earlier. For some reason it was all wacky and I had to mess with the code. It should look okay now to everyone. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteAnd BIG thanks to Carolyn for steering me clear of Beware. So many yucks!
I read some horror, but this one definitely isn't in my range of reading... orgies and repetitive rape did me in right there... not reading this one.
ReplyDeletejustpeachy36@yahoo.com
Sounds like Carolyn picked a perfect Turkey Tale choice - Beware! sounds like an apt title and I will beware reading it.
ReplyDeleteBarbed1951(at)aol(dot)com
I always think the best villains are the ones you can't help relating to a little bit. Having a villain so repugnant isn't just offputting, it's lazy writing!
ReplyDeletelibertyfallsdown (at) hotmail.co.uk
"but even though this book was absolutely disgusting it was somehow compelling me to read it, it was like it had me in a dark magical spell and I just couldn’t put the book down."
ReplyDeleteUgh!!! Don't you hate those books? Especially if they are in a series, I am the sort of person that cannot not finish reading a book or a series, no matter how terrible it is (for instance "The Unseen" series- but I think that your choice sounds all the more terrible)...

This really does sound like a Turkey book.
ReplyDeleteHorror is not a favorite genre to read. But after this review I'll definitely be staying away from this one.
elaing8(at)netscape(dot)net
this book sounds disgusting, while murder and stuff doesnt usually bother me, not a big fan of rape and sexism, etc.
ReplyDeleteelizabethjhoskins@gmail.com
Ugh, this book sounds totally creepy. I've read his books before and he has a tendency to be a creepy kind of writer.

Wow that was a little hard to just read. I'm not a big fan of horror so I could never read something like that anyways but thanks for letting us know.
ReplyDeleteapk1princess(at)live(dot)com
Wow! Thanks for the warning on that book. I'll stay far away from it. I really feel for you, and I understand how you would have felt the need to finish it. Even though I can imagine that it would have been very difficult.

Wow... that sounds like some kind of read. I love a good villain but damn. I give you props for finishing.
ReplyDeleterobin [at] intensewhisper [dot] com
Oh! I am not sure I'd have made it past the first 30 pages if that was what it contained. ArGH! I hate authors who do that, take out their own aggressions on the written page or think that's what the reader wants to read. BLECH!
ReplyDeleteVWinship at aol dot com
Thanks for the warning. I agree that it would make no sense to see a rape victim just jump into bed with the next man that came along.
ReplyDeleteheatwave96(at)hotmail.com
Okay I would definitely not make it past those first 30 pages let alone the entire book. I probably wouldn't pick it up in the first place since I don't read psychologically thrillers/horrors.
ReplyDeletenalynboni AT gmail DOT com
That book sounds positively vile. Thanks for the warning!

ReplyDeleteWow, what a great post and horrible book! It had me laughing and then repulsed within a short amount of time. I read most of it to my husband and we are both very glad we didn't read that book!
ReplyDeletekarenbailey@internode.on.net
With all of the repugnant aspects of the story, I doubt that I could have finished the book. *shudders*
ReplyDeletelittle lamb lst at yahoo dot com
You should get some sort of award for finishing that book! There so many intolerable themes in your descriptions- rape, violence against women, sexism... I wonder who his target customer is? Surely, it wasn't written for a female population. Our heroines must occasionally go through tribulation to keep the story transcendent, but they must be able to recover and grow from the experience!
ReplyDeleteThis reader would given up at page 30!
That book sounds awful. I hate sexist crap like that. And I hope your hair really is that color! One of my best friend's hair is exactly like that and I'm blown away by how often she's asked if it's natural.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely sounds like a book to miss !
ReplyDeleteMakes one wonder if the author was writing his deepest and darkest true feelings or if he was just trying to cater to a really low-brow audience.
Somebody should tell him " less is more" as the saying goes.
Thanks for the giveaway.

Thanks everyone for stopping by! Good luck in the giveaway! :D
ReplyDeleteOh, wow. I've never heard of that many pros and cons being given into a book (usually there'd be more pros half way through the review, at least). Somehow I feel glad I never chanced upon "Beware", the whole scene seems way too... as Carolyn put it, flat (and it's especially the characters who can't be seen as that). My opinions would have probably been the same, or harsher, but it's great she tried to give it the benefit of the doubt.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks so much for mentioning that book, I'll probably never touch it with a ten-foot pole now.
Thank you for the chance in the giveaway, too! :)

ReplyDeletesophieamontreal AT gmail DOT com
Wow & Humm is what playing in my mind.. Still processing this tale. Yeah, I don't think I will be reading this one. When I read post & reviews about things in books like this you tend to wonder just how much of this stuff is real imagination and how much of it is a hidden desire. I think myself somewhat knowledgable with some pretty bad stuff working in a crime lab & when I hear about books like this my brain just goes in to alot of different directions & the one thing that I keep coming back to, Is that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If they are continually writing this type of content throughout the storyline of the book, on some really deep level that author has some embedded issues he or she is going to need to workout. It's one thing to make a point in the story to make it go somewhere but I feel after readig your take on this that their is so much more going on with that person then just an imagined story. Thank you for the heads up, I'll pass on this one for sure! :) Happy Turkey Day

oh man, I am thankful I didn't read that book. That's a lot going on for the first 30 pages, something I will make sure I steer clear from.

ReplyDeleteOh, gosh. =S That's just ugly.
It reminds me of what G.K. Chesterton once said about a good novel revealing the truth about its hero and a bad novel revealing the truth about its author. I wouldn't want to meet the author of a book like that!
altaemoeniaRomae [at] gmail [dot] com
That book sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a horror fan, but I like some of the zombie books that have been published recently. However, I've always hated it when writers put a lot of gore just for the sake of gore, or because it's a genre convention. It's usually completely unnecessary. Also, I find psychological horror far more scary.
OMG!
ReplyDeleteWow in the first 30 pages? :S
I am open to dark themes as well. In fact I started reading books in English like 15 years ago and my favorite genre was (and still is along with UF and PR)Forensic Thrillers and Crime Thrillers. I used to read a lot about murders and ways to kill people and disturbed minds.
... Still detailed rape scenes? Bludgeoning?I don't think I could read that ..not easily or pleasantly anyways so I don't think I could stand the book either!!!
