Review
I love a good shapeshifter romance. There’s something about a strong woman who can tame The Beast within the man she loves that gets me every time. CHANGELING MOON takes a slightly different approach. Veterinarian shapeshifter Connor Macleod doesn’t need any taming. He’s lived in the same small town as his family for generations, happy with his pack and his life. Zoey Tyler is the one on edge, hoping to start a new life away from her famous physic family as a newspaper editor. She doesn’t get a chance to try a normal life because shortly after arriving, she gets attacked by a crazy werewolf and Connor shows up to help her fend him off. But the rogue wolf wants more than just one bite.
The mythology in CHANGELING MOON has a few fun twists. Harper has appropriated the word Changeling (which I always associate with faeries) to describe her werewolves. Most Changelings inherit their ability to shift and remain autonomous, but if someone is bitten and changed, they can be controlled by their Sire. There are also other gifted individuals with various abilities, one in specific which I won’t spoil that has a very cool mythological connection.
I did have a couple issues with CHANGELING MOON. The dialogue between Connor and Zoey was heavy on the cheese and I did roll my eyes several times. That, more than anything else, made the romance feel rushed at first. I also thought the cover would make sense after I read the book but it doesn’t. You’d think with a necklace that bold it would have some kind of significance in the story, especially since it’s repeated on the cover of the next book in the series. Nope. No necklace at all.
Overall, this is a fast fun shifter romance with lots of small town charm and steamy scenes. The supporting cast in CHANGELING MOON is great, and even the two Macleod siblings who are only referenced by other characters grabbed my attention and I’m thrilled to learn that they will be the leads in the next two Changeling books. CHANGELING DREAM, releases on June 28th and will feature Connor’s widowed brother James, who has retreated to his wolf form for thirty years, finding a woman who makes him want to be a man again. The third book in the series, CHANGELING DAWN, will follow their sister Kenzie, when it releases in January 2012.
