Welcome to the fourth day of Turkey Tales!  Everyday this week, some of my favorite bloggers will be sharing some of their worst reads with us in the first Turkey Tales event.

I knew it was coming.  One of my guests was going to pick a Turkey Tale that I really liked.  My friend Angela from Dark Faerie Tales gets that honor.  She is always an insightful reviewer and on the rare occasions we disagree on a book, I can see her points even when they didn’t keep me from enjoying the book (as in the case with her choice).  Leave a comment for another chance at the giveaway. Details below

When Abigail asked me to participate in her Turkey Tales feature, I didn’t think it would be that hard to narrow down one book that ultimately let me down in every aspect. While I’ve read other books this year that failed to deliver, Personal Demons moved to the front of the line. You can read the finer points of my Personal Demons review here. I’ve selected Personal Demons as my Turkey Tale for the following reasons:

  1. Unlikable Heroine: Irredeemable… This one word speaks volumes about Frannie’s character. I was never able to connect with Frannie’s character. Her attributes essentially remained the same throughout the story. Remember what a raving b!t@h Cordelia Chase was? But over the course of Buffy and Angel her character developed? Well the protagonist in Personal Demons has zero character growth. She's the same shallow, uninteresting character at the end of the book.
  2. Bad Romance: I’m a free b!t@h… Yes, we know, Frannie. You’re free with your affections. The love interests are tacked on and very formulaic. That would be okay if done well, but in Personal Demons it’s hard to buy the love connection between eons old celestial and infernal beings and a 17 year old. Frankly, this makes the Twilight love story look like Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
  3. World-building: I had a hard time believing that such powerful/ancient, damn near cosmic, supernatural humanity hanging in the balance characters are subject to obvious mcguffins such as the 'chosen one' protagonist. That chosen one schtick is played out even when done well as in The Matrix. It's utterly ridiculous that a hapless and boy crazy protagonist is going to play a major role in some cosmic struggle between good and evil, but I’d buy it if it was well done like Harry Potter.

Personal Demons isn’t a story for everyone. If I were a 12 or 13 year old, I might be thoroughly captivated and easily entertained by this story. Unfortunately, older readers aren’t likely to be as forgiving. These are just my thoughts, but you be the judge.

Thanks for having me, Abigail.

Thanks so much Angela!  And check back tomorrow for the last Turkey Tale from Natasha from Wicked Little Pixie.

  1. Wow. The main character is supposed to be 17?! I thought that this was an adult novel, just judging by the cover. I love your comment about this book making Twilight look like a real love story. I am going to go with your advice and my instincts and stay far, far away from this one!

  2. Hi Angela! The cover for this book looks way adult, none of those people look like teenagers! I like your choice, and as with Mrs. DeRaps above me am going to stay far away.

  8. yeah some authors think that you have to get onboard with the importance of their main character just because they made it the main character. So it's one of those books where you're glad it's only fiction and our fate does not lie in the hands of 17 years-old acting like brats?

  9. 17? Really? Is it supposed to be YA or Adult with really young protagonists?
Despite the Turkey read, I might have to check it out just to see what it is all about. Great post!

  10. Huh, funny to see from other commenters that they thought the book looked like an adult title- I thought from first glance that they looked like teenagers on the cover. I hope it hasn't 'tricked' people. I've seen a lot of buzz about this book, but I don't know if I ever would have gotten to it anyway. I have a giant TBR pile of adult books; who knows when my YA experiment will begin? And it sounds like Personal Demons won't be the guinea pig.

  13. I read PD and enjoyed it. For me it wasn't so much about Frannie because like you said, she is a flat character that does not change much. Luc is the one that made the book strong, enjoyable and entertaining.

  44. Like I said,I enjoyed Personal Demons. Luc especially. I understand the complaints, but for me it was a fun fast read with some very cool world building elements like the different scents for various sins.

  45. So, one blogger loves it and one blogger hates it. That just proves that we all have different likes and dislikes. There was a book that I finally put down with disgust somewhere in the middle. I got so tired of the heroine's whining. She wanted to be accepted as an adult, but she was acting like a spoiled brat. Well, I am obviously in the minority because this is one of the series of books to get positive review after positive review. It was the first book that I put down. Now I may have to revisit it so that I can find out why so many bloggers love this series.

  57. Thanks for all of the great comments. I really wanted to love this book. A few of my trusted review friends liked it, so I thought that I would, too.

As I stated in my review:

It's a shame that Luc turned out to be such a lackluster character because he had the most potential to be interesting. Luc is supposed to be an "evil" demon sent to seduce Frannie and lead her down a sinful path so that he can tag her soul for his boss, but he NEVER does anything evil. Imagine watching a movie about a serial killer who never kills anybody. Preposterous, right? Luc is probably one of the most pitiful characterizations of "evil" that I've ever read.

My problems with Frannie are epic:

Frannie isn't terribly sympathetic or likable, and the frequent use of the words: "`Cause", "Whatever", and "Mmm" literally drove me mad. Frannie is driven by lust and paralyzed by ambivalence when it comes to making her own decisions. I don't have an issue with her sudden lustful fits and teenage angst because it's actually one of the only believable aspects of the book. The major issue is that there isn't ANYTHING else to Frannie. Her character is completely vacuous and superficial on every level. But for the fact that Frannie's "innocence" is mentioned in the book, she would be known as the town bicycle. Her constant falling all over and making out with Luc and Gabe at seamlessly the most random moments felt shallow. I never felt that necessary romantic and emotional connection. Beyond the fact that Frannie is just a horny, annoying, selfish, and immature person, she's just not that interesting. I simply couldn't find one redeemable quality about her.

There are a fair amount of YA books out there with excellent characterization, etc., but there are also a lot that talk down to the reader. I simply don't like that. I don't think YA books have to be dumbed-down to hit that target audience. Melissa Marr is an great example. She's amazing. Melissa rules the YA genre. As an adult I'd read anything that she wrote. Even if it was a book made from sticky notes.

    heatwave96(at)hotmail.com

    ReplyDelete
  61. I would'nt mind trying ton read through this book Angela just to see where your interest fell. I'm an adult but I love teenage and children stories where the child must come to terms and deal with adult situations and yet also problems that even adults shouldn't have to face. Like a 17 year old playing a major role in the fight between good and evil. However, if said 17 year old is a complete b*** then it becomes a major turn off for me. Cordelia in the Buffy series just irked my nerves while in Angel I was happy that she actually got better as a character. Also the cover for personal demons made me think adult love triangle and to me that's just sad. But thank you for reviewing!

  62. I read very little YA because quite honestly, I find teenagers in books to be rather boring. They haven't yet had enough life experiences to make them interesting and well-rounded characters. I've been wanting to get my hands on it for some time now, but suddenly I'm not so sure. I guess my safest bet will be to get it from the libraries and then I can form some thoughts on it myself. 66. Well thanks for sharing that! I was actually thinking of maybe reading this some time, but now I likely won't! I trust other reviewer bloggers when it comes to these things. It sounded like an okay read despite there being yet another love triangle.

It's really not cool with me. Did I like Hush,Hush? Yes, I admit I did like the story. The love interest not so much.
Fallen by Lauren Kate, for some reason that one seems different to me. I guess because of what we find out in the end of the book, for me is what makes it different.

I have to think that I really liked it.
I'm used to darker, grimmer (sp?) and more adult books, but once I read it with an open mind it was pretty fun.
Frannie was pretty normal and predictable and I really liked the conversations on the book and how they fell in love. I thought it was convincing...not that I wouldnt have liked it a bit longer on that one and shorter on other descriptions. :)

  80. Oh Angela, now I'm a bit anxious..
I've had Personal Demons on my wishlist when I learned the premise and now it's on my TBR shelf. But I keep seeing more and more negative reviews (with details supporting the criticism) and I couldn't get past page 40. I was hoping I just wasn't in the mood and should pick it up another time, but now I start to fear I will feel the same whenever I pick it up as it wasn't my mood that was the problem, but that Frannie and Luc irritated me so much. I will give it another chance before giving it to my teen cousin..
