Ivy Devlin is the author of the upcoming paranormal YA novel, LOW RED MOON which is a modernized retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with, in my opinion, huge Twilight influences (my review will be up on Thursday). She was kind enough to let me interview her today and Bloomsbury sent along a copy of LOW RED MOON to giveaway too. See details below.
Interview
ATUF: Did you initially set out to update the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale in LOW RED MOON, or did it just happen during the writing process?
ID: I most definitely got the idea for LOW RED MOON from Little Red Riding Hood--I was thinking about it one day, thought, "What if...?" -- and before I knew it, I was writing!
ATUF: What were the most important elements from Little Red Riding Hood to preserve in LOW RED MOON, and what were the parts that you deliberately wanted to change?
ID: I wanted to keep in Little Red Riding Hood, obviously--hence Avery Hood! And I wanted the grandmother to be in there as well, but I wanted her to be around for longer than she is in the original. And there are other things I changed as well, but you'll have to read the story to find out what those changes are!
ATUF: Are there any other fairy tales that you’d like to modernize and retell?
ID: At the moment, no--but ask me again tomorrow and you might be an entirely different answer!
ATUF: LOW RED MOON creates a new mythology for werewolves. Can you tell us about it and any other important details from your world building?
ID: I didn't know I'd created a new mythology for werewolves! That's...wow. I'm blushing! I didn't really think about creating anything new when I was writing LOW RED MOON; I just let the story come out, and it did take some twists and turns along the way! I did do some research about wolves, and I drew a map of Woodlake so I could see on paper what was in my head, but the rest of the story just came from the characters, as weird as that might sound. They knew their story far better than I did!
ATUF: Avery comes from a very eco-conscious family. Is that something she shares with her creator?
ID: I'm afraid that while I did grow up in a very rural environment, my similarities to Avery end there--just a regular house and recycling for me!
ATUF: If LOW RED MOON were ever made into a movie, who would your dream or, to keep things interesting, nightmare cast be?
ID: Honestly, if LOW RED MOON ever was made into a movie, I would care who got cast--I'd just be thrilled that it was going to be a movie. I can't even imagine that happening!
ATUF: What other projects can we look forwarding to reading from you soon?
ID: I'm working on a few things at the moment...
ATUF: What are some of your favorite titles/authors in the paranormal genres?
ID: I don't read a lot of paranormal, and I especially can't read it right now (because of the few things I'm working on!) but I do love Melissa de la Cruz's Blue Blood series!
ATUF: LOW RED MOON is a beautiful book inside and out. It’s one of the few books I’ve read that uses colored ink inside (the word moon is red at least in the first chapter of my ARC, as well the the tree detailing on the corners). What can you tell us about the design?
ID: I wish I could claim credit for it, but all of the lovely detail--and yes, the book is two-color throughout!!--is all thanks to the fantastic design team at Bloomsbury. They had a vision for the book and what it's produced is simply gorgeous looking!
ATUF: My favorite scene in LOW RED MOON has to be when Avery first truly discovers what Ben is. Can you tell us about your favorite scene?
ID: I can't, because it's a total spoiler--but that moment--yeah, I liked writing that.
ATUF: If LOW RED MOON was a Frankenstein book compiled from elements of other books, what would some of those other books be?
ID: I have no idea! Reviewers have compared it to Twilight and Shiver, neither of which I've read--although I did see the movie version of Twilight--so maybe that counts? :-)
ATUF: Thanks so much for stopping by Ivy. Come back anytime!

Book Description
A tale of heart-stopping love, death, amnesia . . . and dangerous creatures.
The only thing Avery Hood can remember about the night her parents died is that she saw silver—deadly silver, moving inhumanly fast. As much as she wants to remember who killed them, she can't, and there's nothing left to do but try to piece her life back together. Then Avery meets the new boy in school—Ben, mysterious and beautiful, with whom she feels a connection like nothing she's ever experienced. When Ben reveals he's a werewolf, Avery still trusts him—at first. Then she sees that sometimes his eyes flash inhuman silver. And she learns that she's not the only one who can't remember the night her parents died.Part murder mystery, part grief narrative, and part heart-stopping, headlong romance, Low Red Moon is a must-read for teen paranormal fans. As breathless as Twilight and as spooky as Shiver, this is a book to be devoured in one sitting—by an acclaimed YA author making her paranormal debut under the pseudonym Ivy Devlin.
