WANTED
Single human female to join charming, wealthy, single male were-cougar for a night of romantic fun—and maybe more.
Me: The tall, sensuous, open-minded leader of my clan.
You: A deliciously curvy virgin who’s intimately familiar with what goes bump in the night. Must not be afraid of a little tail. Prefer a woman who’s open to exploring her animal nature. Interest in nighttime walks through the woods a plus.
My turn-ons include protecting you from the worst the supernatural world has to offer. Ready for an adventure? Give me a call.
Vampires and doppelgangers need not apply.
BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST, the first book in the Midnight Liaisons series by Jessica Sims (aka Jill Myles) is exactly what I hoped it would be based on the cover and description: super sexy, super fun, and full of super hot shifters.
Bathsheba is a human pencil pusher working at a paranormal dating service. She is fiercely protective of her younger sister Sara and has gladly sacrificed her own personal happiness in order to keep Sara safe from a werewolf pack that hunts them both. When a cancelled date puts her job and safety in jeopardy, Bath is forced to step in and ends up on a date with Beau, a were-cougar who made my Alpha loving heart race. Supernatural politics, past vendettas, and an unnatural paranormal danger threaten to extinguish the sparks that fly between these two, but Beau refuses to let go of what he wants, and Bath is finding it harder and harder to remember why she keeps running.
If you’ve read Jill Myles’s Succubus Diaries series, you know she excels at blending humor and romance in a way that elevates both. Under her new pseudonym, Jessica Sims, that same trademark blend shines throughout BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST but with a greater emphasis on romance. There is also a strong suspense element kept me up way into the wee hours of the night. Plus, I loved that the romantic tension started hot and stayed that way thanks to a very sexy twist on shifter mythology which I won’t spoil.
If you’re a paranormal romance fan you’re going to love BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST. This has all the ingredients that make up a classic romance novel, but with a paranormal twist that heightens everything. The future books in the Midnight Liaisons series will feature new characters and new romances. Based on the ending of BEATY DATES THE BEAST, I’m betting that Bathsheba’s sister Sara and a certain were-bear will be up next. Can’t wait.

Don’t miss this spectacular new series that will steal your heart and haunt your dreams, Welcome to Shadow Falls camp, nestled deep in the woods of a town called Fallen…
One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…
BORN AT MIDNIGHT is like Camp Half Blood from the Percy Jackson series, except that the Shadow Falls campers are older teens, and instead of demigods there are werewolves, vampires, witches, fairies, and other paranormal creatures. Plus there is a whole lot of romance.
BORN AT MIDNIGHT starts off a little slow. Meeting all the campers at Shadow Falls and learning all the camp rules etc. is not as interesting as I would have hoped. Specifically Kylie’s hormone driven responses to several of the male campers while still lusting after her ex made me lose a lot of respect for her.
Fortunately, the second half of BORN AT MIDNIGHT is significantly better than the first. Kylie’s cabin mates gain some depth and dimension. One, a new vampire being torn between two sides of her family, the other a dyslexic witch struggling to overcome her disability and not disappoint her parents. Best of all, the three guys vying for Kylie’s attention begin to distinguish themselves from one another and she starts to finally examine her attraction for each guy and consider their true motives (sex, control, and maybe love?). Even the issues with her parent’s divorce and her perception of both her mom and dad takes an interesting twist.
The key to launching a new series is finding a balance between giving answers while holding back enough to generate interest in future books. BORN AT MIDNIGHT does that beautifully. I’ll definitely be back for the next book in the Shadow Falls series called AWAKE AT DAWN when it’s released in October 2011.

I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds.
Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked.
I'd been warned about Strays -- werecats without a Pride, constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female, and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.
This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back . . . for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I'm no meek kitty. I'll take on whatever -- and whoever -- I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays -- 'cause I got claws, and I'm not afraid to use them . . .
Faythe Sanders is a fiercely independent urban fantasy heroine, very reminiscent of Elena Michaels (the only female werewolf in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series) in fact STRAY was in many ways similar to Elena’s first book BITTEN: The prodigal daughter, a rare female shifter, is forced to return home and reunite with her Pack and former Love while hunting down some stray shifters. But the similarities didn’t bother me in the slightest. Both BITTEN and STRAY are excellent books with enough differences to be more than worthwhile reads on their own.
Faythe, in particular, was a consistent high note throughout STRAY. She was gutsy and brave, with a clear, often sarcastic, voice, that made sense since she grew up as the only girl in a house full of boys. Her unwavering insistence on independence was at times foolish, but she was quick to acknowledge her mistakes and that her stubbornness was a weakness that she constantly battled.
The romance was equally good as Faythe struggled not just with her ex Marc, but also with the childhood friend Jace, whom she’d always considered as a brother until now. The heated flirtation between Faythe and Jace added to the romantic tension and realistically fueled the doubt that Faythe experienced with her emotions for two very different men.
And all that romantic tension was only heightened by the dynamics of Pride life in STRAY which were fascinating in their complexity, specifically the role of females. Rachel Vincent does an admirable job of communicating all the intricacies of life as a Shifter without bogging her readers down with boring details.
All in all, STRAY was an excellent start to what promises to be an excellent series. This is the perfect time to jump into this series as the sixth and final book in the series came out last year which means you can read Faye’s full story with no waiting!
WARNING: This book deals heavily with the subject of rape both from the side of the victims and the rapists. Although there aren’t any rape scenes in the book, it is alluded to and attempted many times, one failed attempt in particular is somewhat graphic and disturbing.

A chilling destiny she can’t escape.
A devastating love she can’t resist.
Violet McKenna isn’t a normal girl with normal teenage issues; she has more to contend with than most people could handle. Violet thought she was just crazy when she had a vivid vision of her dad’s murder. Her life started falling apart when her premonition came true. She’s had flashes of other events too–the problem was nobody believed her until she found a new school: Winterhaven.
At Winterhaven, Violet finally feels like she belongs. She quickly finds a close group friends and discovers that they too have psychic ‘gifts’—as do all the students at Winterhaven. But as soon as she feels settled she discovers the most intriguing and alluring boy she has ever met, and things quickly go awry. As the attraction between them grows, intense visions of the boy’s death start to haunt her. In her premonitions, the secret he is unwilling to share begins to reveal itself. And to Violet’s horror, she learns that their destinies are intertwined in a critical–and deadly–way.
“You won’t lose me,” I said, taking a tentative step toward him. “No matter what your secrets are, no matter how terrible you think they are, you won’t lose me.”
He reached for my shoulders and drew me against his chest. “I’ll make sure to remind you that you said that, okay? When you’re running away from me as fast as you can.”
I hate this cover. And not because it’s dull, plain, and uninspiring (I still have no idea why there’s a giant butterfly on the front). I hate it because it completely turned me off of this book so that I almost didn’t read it. And then I would have missed out on a story that is deeply romantic and tragic in a way that pierces your heart and makes you long for the impossible.
HAVEN doesn’t really break new grown with it’s plot, in fact it borrows heavily from Buffy, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, TWILIGHT, FALLEN, and to a lesser degree HARRY POTTER and X-Men. But it does combine some of the best parts of those stories to create a book that plucks at your heartstrings, carries you along a dark romance, forces you to chase after a dangerous mystery, and holds you hostage until the very end.
What HAVEN doesn’t borrow are the clichés that litter this genre. We are spared the vicious beautiful clique at the boarding school where Violet transfers. She doesn’t get a long with everyone, but there aren’t any psycho cheerleaders who get off on torturing people. Better still, Violet isn’t some wimpy waif who needs to be coddled into using her abilities. And her love interest, Aiden…it’s impossible to say what I liked so much about him without giving away anything, but the way his maturity is explained so perfectly sidesteps something that always bothers me in YA fiction that I actually let out a sigh of relief.
Bad cover art can’t really be blamed on the author, and I hope readers will look past it and experience the story and characters inside because Paranormal YA doesn’t get much better than HAVEN. Mystery, romance, and friendship tied up in a neat paranormal package. On her website, Kristi says that HAVEN is the first in a planned trilogy. They can’t come soon enough.
