Turkey Tales is starting tomorrow! With Thanksgiving only days away, it’s time to sit back and reflect on the things we’re most thankful for…family, friends, and of course good books. As a little twist, I thought we should take the time to be thankful for the bad books that we didn’t (hopefully) read this year.

This weeklong event celebrating some of the worst books we’ve ever read with giveaways of five of the best books I’ve reviewed here on All Things Urban Fantasy.
My list of ‘Turkey Tales’ is wonderfully short this year, so I hit up a few of my favorite bloggers to come share some of their worst reads with us. Here’s who will be dropping by:
- Rebecca from Dirty Sexy Books on Sunday
- Carolyn from Book Chick City on Monday
- Jackie from Literary Escapism on Tuesday
- Angela from Dark Faerie Tales on Wednesday
- Natasha from Wicked Little Pixie on Thursday
If you’re not familiar with these ladies or their sites, they’ve been known to be the biggest fans of books they love and brutally honest about the books they hate. Should make for a fun week, right?
And because I want all of us to be thankful not just for books we didn’t read, but also for the ones we did. I’m giving away copies of my favorite books from 2010. Of the 150+ books that have been reviewed on All Things Urban Fantasy, only twelve have earned perfect 5/5 bat ratings (yep, we’re tough on books here):
Starting today and running through Thanksgiving, you can comment once a day on each Turkey Tales post (including this one) for up to six entries. On Nov 26th, I’ll add up the entries and choose five winners to pick one of the 5 bat! Reviewed titles above to win.
So tell me, what was your Turkey Tale from this year that the rest of us should be glad we didn’t read? Or maybe there’s a title you’re especially thankful you did read? Leave your answer in the comments below
Giveaway Guidelines
- Open Internationally (wherever The Book Depository ships)
- Leave a comment that includes:
- Answer my question
- A way to contact you if you win
- Winners will be announced on Nov 26th

My new all time favorite book is "Danann Frost Falls From Grace" by Joanne Valiukas. Sooo glad I found this self published author and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she will find a publisher to publish the other 6 books she has done!
ReplyDeletethe_happy_soul @ yahoo.com
My Turkey Tale from this year is Planet Pregnancy by Linda Oatman High. It's a novel told in verse, which I usually love, and deals with teen pregnancy. I try to have realistic reads and such on my free reading shelves in my classroom, so I thought that this would be a great pick. Not so much.
ReplyDeleteHere are a few of the lines:
"I wonder where/ you go to get WIC?/ I'm not a hick./ I don't pick my nose./ I'm not toothless"
Hm. Not the most fluid, poetic writing I've read. This read just does not cut it for my Ellen Hopkins-obsessed students!
Thanks for the giveaway!

Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts series is defo my favourite series for this year. All of the books were awesome!
ReplyDeleteholz_twilight@msn.com
I had the misfortune of reviewing a selfpublished book 'Not Telling' by Cindy Vine. A definite Turkey Tale.
ReplyDeleteI've just spotted your one bat description. Vomiting out of the eyes was certainly my response to this one!

I'm especially thankful that I read Patricia Briggs' Silver Borne. Luckily I haven't read anything horrible this year.

I have read quite a few good books this year. I am especially thankful for "Feed" by Mira Grant, "Mage in Black" by Jaye Wells and the entire Allie Beckstrom series by Devon Grant.

My Turkey Tale for 2010 was "Wicked: Witch & Curse" by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie.
ReplyDeletejoycefierro@mindspring.com
I am thankful for so many books this year, but Richelle Mead's Dark Swan books and Jaye Wells's Sabina Kane are definitely on top of the list of new favorites. I hate to badmouth, but Tracy O'Hara's Night's Cold Kiss was awful. I unfortunately read a few more stinkers this year. But I'm thankful there were way more good ones!
ReplyDeleteb(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com
Probably one of the worst books I read was Halo by Alexandra Adornetto...it put me to sleep. A book that I loved was The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin. Always looking for that five star book!
ReplyDeletejnmt3@hotmail.com
Most Thankful? Gotta be Lisa Shearin's Bewitched and Betrayed.
ReplyDeleteLeast Thankful? Bleeding Violet. It looked so good and I understand that since it was written from the perspective of someone with mental problems it could seem disjointed, but the way it was written was still....odd.
maureenfitzgerald99@gmail.com
my turkey tale for thís year is The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall by L. J. Smith - soo bad! I had to struggle to finish it
ReplyDeleteyavampire(at)hotmail.com
quite different from Holz is my impression about Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts Series - I couldn't finish book 1 and every page I read was a torture... I didn't get along with the heroine and her problems...
ReplyDeletegreetings, Ina

I dared to read Dear John by Nicholas Sparks to encourage my niece to read more and it became my Turkey Tale for this year. I usually stick to PNR/UF novels and now I know why. I hate sad endings with pathetic martyrs.
ReplyDeletewalarsha(at)gmail(dot)com
My turkey tale was TruthSeeker by C.E Murphy, the book was a bore and the heroine wasn't very relatable or likable.
ReplyDeleteAs for most thankful? Venom by Jennifer Estep.
Great post/question :)

I loved FEED by Mira Grant and LIFE AS WE KNEW IT by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Definately highlights for me.

Most thankful? There are several books that I've fallen in love with: Special Forces by Aleksandr Voinov, Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl.
ReplyDeleteThe worst? Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I truly don't understand why this sereies is so popular. Another one - "Prowadź swój płóg przez pola umarłych" by Olga Tokarczuk (she's a Polish author). This title is quite popular in my country, but once again I don't know why.
Thank you so much for organizing this giveaway!

I didn't come across a turkey tale for this year. A book I was very thankful to find was
ReplyDeleteThe Native Star by MK Hobson. The author describes her story as "bustle punk" and the setting is post-Civil War America.
There are a lot of books I’m thankful for. My UF Turkey Tale this year is MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead and Unfinished. This book was such a disappointing change from the previous ones in this series. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another fun giveaway.(Email in profile.)
I unfortunately had read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephanie Meyer. I just hated it more than anything this year. Her writing was so flat and plain....I tried reading it twice. Ugh....
ReplyDeletelindsaydevine@bellsouth.net
My favorite books this year is Paranormalcy and Beautiful Darkness. I haven`t read any this year that I did not like, which I am thankful for!
ReplyDeleteAnd of course I forgot to leave my email!!!
ReplyDeletenatcleary at gmail dot com
Well, I hate to say that I did not enjoy Jennifer Estep's Spider's Bite. For some reason I couldn't get into it and I didn't really care for the writing style either. I read it with high hopes of it being a fast fave because I heard so many good things about it.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, a book that I read this year and so glad that I did and LOVED it was Darkfever and the rest of the Fever series! I had been contemplating reading the series for years and finally decided to give it a try last week when I kept hearing lots of good things about it and the anticipation for Shadowfever and I am sooooo glad I did, because I now LOVE the series and am dying to read Shadowfever!
On the YA side I absolutely adored 13 to Life!! One of my all time faves this year! A GREAT start to a new series!!
jessbess2505[at]yahoo[dot]com
I've reviewed some doosie's in the past year, but my least favorite was Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson. Just wasn't what I expected.

ReplyDeleteTwo turkeys for me this year - The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown and The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall by LJ Smith were terrible books. I really wish I could get the time I spent reading them back!
ReplyDeleteTwo fantastic books this year were Feed by Mira Grant and The Midnight Mayor by Kate Griffin - excellent both!
And thanks for the internationally giveaway! :)

I would say be glad you didn't read Post Human by David Simpson
ReplyDeleteblodeuedd1 at gmail dot com
As for glad, well there were many :)
Actually I can't remember the title or author of a book I did not like as it was a long time ago. Sometimes if I am reading a book and just can't get into it I will put it down and go back later and read it. Sometimes your mood or life can keep you from getting into a book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to enter giveaway.

I didn't really have a Turkey Tale from this year, I enjoyed everything I read. But I am especially thankful that I read Gini Koch's Touched By An Alien. It was a fabulous, hilarious, adventure of a story, I loved it.

I'm thankful I read the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. I can't wait to see how the last one ends!
ReplyDeleteSkk25@aol.com
I can't choose a favorite, because i've read so many good books this year. I can tell you my turkey tale which was Arson by Estavan Vega, i started out loving it...but in the end i was so completly let down that i'm still confused about it.
ReplyDeletefraijikhadija (AT) hotmail.com
Luckily for me, I don't have a turkey book, but I have a great pick...Red-headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells. I loved it, and definitely picked up the next book in the series. :)
ReplyDeleteheatwave96(at)hotmail.com
My Turkey Tale this year was Vulnerable, the first book in Amy Lane's little goddess series...Yuck! I don't think I'll ever try an independent author again after this one. Amy if you don't know how to use grammar please get your book proof read and edited. There is this great invention called paragraphs among other things.
ReplyDeletekarenbailey@internode.on.net
I'm going way out of UF here and say that Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson was my favorite book this year. Closely followed by The Hunderd Thousand Kingdoms by N K Jemisin. Other than that, I keep my copies of Ilona Andrews's books fairly close, just like those by Meljean Brook.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to say I don't really have Turky Tales, or at least I can't recall them of the top of my head. There were some that I DNF, but which ones?
dorien_benaets(AT)hotmail.com
My turkey tale would be: The Lord-Protector's Daughter by L. E. Modesitt (Jr). such a promising story idea and cool characters, but what a boring read it turned out to be.
ReplyDelete(email in profile)
My Turkey Tale is (note that it's not WAS) "Feather: Book One of the Feather Series". I remember from eighth grade English that using -ly too much causes the verb it is attached to weaker instead of stronger. Apparently, the editor of this book didn't remember this, because there were about two or three adverbs in every paragraph, whether they were short or long. Also, there was no character developement (for ANY of the characters), synonyms seemed to have been a untouchable legend to the editor, and I couldn't tell what Estella (the main character) thought or felt about each minor character specifically (as she would call them names one moment, then adore them the next).
ReplyDeleteI only finished the book because I have a commitment to finish any book I read. To use Abigail's rating system, I'd give it a .3 out of five.
asianperson at gmail dot com
Oh, and to add - I'm thankful to read the Fallen series by Thomas E. Sniegoski (NOT the one by Lauren Kate) because this series dug deeper into God's love, redemption, and the faith in angels instead of just touching and/or poisoning the surface of it only to make the book (more) popular (and romantic).
ReplyDeleteMay you have a great Thanksgiving with turkeys and pies! (yumm..)
I did not enjoy The Wind in the Willows or This Side of Normal very much. I did quite enjoy Fallout though and Sea and Before I Fall. There were a lot of books that I enjoyed a lot.
ReplyDeletehenderkd(at)email(dot)sc(dot)edu
My favorite books that I am thankful for this year are Bayou Moon and Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews, Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs, and Eat, Prey, Love by Kerrelyn Sparks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.

When a book just plain bites, I stop reading it and permanently excise it from my memory. But when a book has a lot of potential and then pisses all over it - those books stick with me. In a rage-inducing kinda way.
ReplyDeleteMy 2010 Turkey read was SO HORRIFIC I didn't finish it AND desperately spent months trying to scour the words from my mind. I succeeded ridding myself of it's title - but the noxious misogynist rape-tastic plot remains. It was an urban fantasy book about a shifter woman who suddenly wakes up at a strip club, having been kidnapped, drugged and brainwashed into the sex trade. She tries to piece her life back together - only to get re-abducted and this time suffer the fresh hell of her loved ones witnessing her degradation. It was horrifying. Hatehatehate.

I'm thankful for the Kate Daniels series. I'm so glad I finally gave it a try. On the other hand the absolute worst book I read this year was a book called Just Between Friends by Dakota Trace. Blech! Words cannot describe how awful it was. I'd picked it up as a freebie, so at least I didn't waste any money on it.
ReplyDeleteJen(at)delux(dot)com
I was glad I read The Missing by Shiloh Walker. She was a new author to me this year.
ReplyDeleteseriousreader at live dot com
I'm especially thankful for all the wonderful books I read this year, including Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, J.R. Ward's BDB series, and Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really like Fallen by Lauren Kate as much as I'd hoped. It was readable, but just wasn't fast-moving enough for me.
angeldream3(at)gmail(dot)com
I think my best book of the year was Changes by Jim Butcher--I can't wait for the next book!

ReplyDeletedrakeLa90 (at) aol (dot) com
Coincidentally I'm v. thankful I got to finally find and read "Magic Bleeds" and the short story of "Magic Mourns" by Ilona Andrews this year. There are so many titles it's really hard to name them all.
ReplyDeleteBut, unfortunately, even though I loooooooove Charlaine Harris's writing - and the series on Sookie - I had to throw back her "Sweet and Deadly" (for that, do the words boring and uneventful mean anything to you?).
Thank you for the giveaway!!! :)

This year, I was really thankful to have read some wonderful new authors this year that I previously hadn't considered. Among them JR Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs, and starting Rachel Vincent's Shifter series. All have been beyond wonderful and I can't believe it had taken me so long to start them!!

I read a lot of great books this year. Found some wonderful new authors too. The one book I really had issues with and I know a lot of people really loved it was And Falling Fly. Maybe I read it at the wrong time but I just didnt really enjoy it.
ReplyDeletebacchus76 at myself dot com
I'm thankful for Catherine Fisher's Incarceron - I enjoyed it so much and as a result I am also thankful that she wrote a sequel.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any real stinkers this year though my first venture into erotic fiction wasn't such a resounding success!
eva.s.black[@]gmail[.]com
There are a lot of books this year that I'm thankful for, but I'll keep this short. Nightlife by Rob Thurman is my big thankful. Even though I reread it this year it still manages to take my imagination away.
ReplyDeleteAs always what a wonderful event!
goleneyeddragon@gmail.com
I was thoroughly disappointed in Misguided Angel by Melissa De La Cruz. This book was definitely the worst in the series for me. sigh
ReplyDeleteI was really pleased with reading Feed by Mira Grant. It was different and unique and by the end I fell in love.

I'm extremely grateful that I read MoonHeart by Charles De Lint this would be my Turkey tale. It's one of his few novels since he normally stays in the short stories genre (but those just make you crave more) and a great read in the urban fantasy genre. Thanks for giving me the chance to tell fellow book lovers about it! ^.^
ReplyDeleteMidnightangel124@Gmail.com
My turkey tale from this year is Hellbent and Heartfirst by Kassandra Simms. I just finished it and reviewed it on goodreads and here are my thoughts: I have mixed feelings about this book. Part of me really liked it and the other part of me felt like I was left with a big question mark hanging over my head. This is a new author for me and I was drawn by the cover and the blurb on the back. It sounded and looked really good. The romance was there, I really liked Jacyn and Jimmy Wayne's characters and how they were just drawn together. It felt like the book was centered on the romance with things happening in the background. Kind of like I was watching it out of the corner of my eye. Usually, that's not a problem for me, I love a book that is centered on romance alone, I just don't think this romance was strong enough to be a stand alone in a book. It seemed like there should be more going on in the story, more intrigue and danger, boundries that needed to be crossed. All the action and mystery I was expecting, just seemed fuzzy. It was like it was building up to something, then flat lining. I can't say it fell flat, just taperd off because I think it just needed a little more....something??? Example, the story get's going and they are going to confront the creature that is eating children and your expecting something big to happen and your anxious and ready for it. Then it's over and done with in a paragraph and moves on. Now, I like paranormal and I like weird and I like finding a book with a storyline that is unique. This had so much potential. By the cover art, you think that demon shape in the background is an intrical part of the story, but it's barely mentioned. Everything leads up to the events at the end of the book, and am once again I'm anxious to see what happens and everything happens so fast I felt like I had whiplash. What??? I had to re-read it three times and I was still and am still confused on what I just read. That is where the question mark over my head is pulsing in bright neon now. What??? What did I just read on the last few pages, I have no idea, you tell me. What happened at the end? I don't get it. The explanations didn't make sense to me and I felt like I was missing something. How exactly did the bracelet come off Tyler and get on her wrist? She was floating, when did that happen? What exaxtly happened with Avery? How and when did Travis get the necklace? Teague is what??? Wait, go back to the last scene in the kitchen and my question mark just grew 2 inches. The ending makes me wondering if she has or had plans for a sequel. I like my endings packgaged nicely and tied in a bow, but am wondering what happens now? Do they find a way to get the bracelet off? I'd like to know. Now that I listed everything that bothered me, I have to say I gave it three stars because I really did like the hero and heroine. I loved their chemistry and I thought the bedroom scenes were hot and sensual.
ReplyDeletejune111@att.net
The best books I read lately were Grave Witch by Kalayna Price, Afterlight by Elle Jasper, Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kade and Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill! :)

ReplyDeletelvtink21@wi.rr.com
I have to admit that I usually read carefully the goodreads synopses and reviews before deciding to buy a book ,so I rarely read a book I end up hating.
ReplyDeleteI can say two books I loved instead.
I'm going to sound cliche, but I loved Hush,Hush (despite some things that irked me) and Nalini Singh's Angel's Blood and Archangel's Kiss.

ReplyDeleteI'm really thankfull that I got to read Rachel Vincent's Alpha I'd waited for this book and it was a great ending to a great series.

i'm thankfull this year for Rachel Gibson's Simply Irresistible. It's a old book, but the history is so sweet and funny, that makes you day more happy :D

For reading, I am thankful that I got to read Elizabeth Naughtons: 1-Marked & 2-Entwined from her Eternal Guardians Series & I'm so glad she switched publishers so that I will still be able to buy her next hard copy/not e-book) Tempted next October. It's a wait but it's on my list ;D I really like this series & when I heard about all that Dorchester junk, I was a very upset gal & I wrote the publishing company just what I thought about their so called changes.
ReplyDeleteWhat book I didn't enjoy & ultimately put away unfinished was an Anthony Piers book called On a Pale Horse. I don't know if it was my state of mind at the time or if it just didn't hook me. It was given to me to read from a family member who swears "Awsomeness" by this author but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try to read it again after the holidays when I don't have alot of distractions ;)
Stephmartin71(at)yahoo(dot)com
I have quite a few books I'm very thankful this year: Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch, Master of None by Sonya Bateman, Mind Games by Carolyn Crane, Promise by Kristie Cook and Embers by Laura Bickle. All were absolutely fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe book that I wish I hadn't read is Fallen by Lauren Kate, ugh, so disappointing.
Thank you for the great giveaway!
