Our guest today is paranormal romance author Alexis Morgan, author of the Paladins of Darkness series featuring immortal warriors who die again and again to protect humanity - and the women they love, and the Talions series about a rugged group of warriors selected to hunt down and punish those that have gone rogue within their own kind. We’re talking Alpha males with a capital ‘A.’ And as Alexis tells us, even their creator has trouble controlling them. The fantastic Renee from Simon & Schuster is providing ten of you the chance to read about these warriors yourself in the latest Paladin novel DEFEAT THE DARKNESS. See details below.
So Who’s Really in Charge Around Here?
by
Alexis Morgan
My first Paladin story, Dark Protector, was released back in 2006, and I recently completed my seventh and eighth stories in the series. Those two books, Bound by Darkness and Beyond the Darkness, will be back-to-back releases next summer. After telling that many stories set in the same world, you would think that the answer to the question I posed up there in the title would be obvious—me.
And part of the time, that’s true. For example, I’m the one to decided what particular abilities the Paladins would have, such as the ability to come back from death. I also determined the cost of that ability, that each time they would lose more of their humanity. I knew from the beginning that their foes were from another world that was separated from ours by an energy barrier, and that the aliens would be out of their minds with blood-lust every time they crossed into our world.
I even picked the settings, or at least two out of the three. I chose Seattle and Missouri as the primary backgrounds for the Paladin stories for a couple of reasons. One is that I know those areas well and knew I could make the stories more believable because of that knowledge. The other is that each of them is an earthquake zone with the added bonus of the Pacific Northwest also being blessed with volcanoes. At the beginning, I certainly didn’t envision stories being set in Kalithia, the alien world, but that’s just one of the things that the characters themselves demanded.
And I assure you, those Paladins and their friends sure do know how to make their desires known. Trahern really wanted to have his story told to the point that he kept trying to take over that first book. It was only by planning his for the second that he’d let Devlin have his day in the sun. Barak q’Young was supposed to die in the first book. Yeah, I know that shocks people sometimes, but I realized as I wrote the book that he wasn’t the monster I thought he’d be. Instead, he was a hero in the making.
Jarvis grabbed my attention from the minute he appeared in Trahern’s book, refusing to be just a cardboard character designed to serve a particular function in the story before fading back into obscurity. There was also another Paladin who first appeared in Trahern’s story bare-chested, bare footed, and wearing flannel pj bottoms to fight in. I knew he wanted his story told, and Hunter Fitzsimon got his wish earlier this year. And finally, Larem q’Jones was dragged kicking and screaming from Kalithia into our world. I should have known he wouldn’t be satisfied until he got a book of his own. It’s the May 2011 release.
So to answer my own question, oftentimes it’s the characters themselves who determine whose story gets told next and what settings and theme will be explored. For me, that’s what really makes the journey from the first book back in 2006 through the ones yet to come so interesting. I can hardly wait to see who is waiting in the wings to have their story told next. To read more from my heroic Paladins, check out some of my short stories on Pocket After Dark!

Hard-eyed and hard-bodied, Hunter Fitzsimon isn't what Tate Justice expected in a tenant for the apartment above her garage. Terse and intensely private, Hunter's mission is to protect a narrow stretch of the barrier between Earth and Kalithia against the Paladins' ruthless enemies -- a job that would be much easier without his sexy landlady nosing around. So when she follows Hunter into the woods late one night, he decides to teach Tate a lesson with a passionate kiss that brings her to her knees...and unexpectedly ignites red-hot desire deep in his soul. But the warrior's dark and dangerous world is no place for his fiery lover. Does possessing Tate mean turning his back on his brethren...or will Hunter forsake the woman of his dreams for the harsh duty he's always known?

Hi Alexis!
ReplyDeleteI like the insight into how the stories come to be. :)
These books all look awesome! I know what's going on my Christmas list this year!
Thanks so much for sharing with us!
wow, what smexy sounding series! I love me some alpha-male stories . And the covers are to die for. Your books are on my radar now, can't wait to give them a try!
ReplyDeleteDefeat the Darkness sounds like an exciting read. And I really loved reading your interview. The following in it had really made me laugh:
ReplyDeleteThere was also another Paladin who first appeared in Trahern’s story bare-chested, bare footed, and wearing flannel pj bottoms to fight in.
I hadn't heard of your series, Alexis ... where have I been? They sound absolutely wonderful. Thanks for sharing them with us.
ReplyDeleteGood morning! Thank you all for stopping by! Yes, the cover gods have smiled on me.
ReplyDeleteLil, yeah that's a heck of an image, isn't it? Still, it still remains so clear in my mind. It took awhile before Hunter "told" me his name, so for a long time I just thought of him as pj guy.
Alexis
Just started reading this series, so thanks for the chance to win Hunter's story.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read Barak, I knew he had to be a hero (eventually). I'm glad he was strong enough to fight off his murderous author :)
ReplyDeleteYou know, you could have kept calling him PJ Guy and we'd still have loved him. But I'm sure he's happy to be named ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd after getting to know DJ so well, I'm surprised you have control over any of them!
But I love them all.
I agree with Jessa! LOL
ReplyDeleteYesterday, I was on the phone with one of my book club friends who had just gotten to the "good part" of Hunter's book. ;-) We talked about that for awhile.
Thanks for writing such great books that make me feel as close to my internet friends as if they lived next door.
~Laurie
Now you did forget to mention a certain Paladin - who took it upon himself to have his book written "NOW" rather than later - Cullen. Stepping across the barrier at the end of Barak's book. Ya gotta love a hero that takes matters into his own hands. I'm just surprised DJ didn't jump to the front of the line at some point.
ReplyDeleteHave I read these books a few too many times??/ NAA.
Jessa--Yep, that's me. Murderous. I like that! Still, it's true that Barak demanded to be more than a dead Other. And by letting him live, it changed the whole story line for the series.
ReplyDeleteNM--I never ever had the illusion that I was in control of DJ.
Laurie--Thanks for stopping by. I assume the good part of Hunter's book wasn't where he was mowing Mabel's yard for her.
Alexis
I've been reading this series from the beginning so when my sister asked for a recommendation I packed them up and sent them off to her. Now I miss my Paladins! This interview really made me want to go back and read them all over again. I can't believe that you were going to kill Barak in the first book- flawed characters like that make the best heroes. I'm glad he made it:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the interview!!
Hi Alexis,
ReplyDeleteI Love your Paladin series! I was first introduced to them with Dark Defender, and I have been a fan ever since. Thanks for taking the time to share with us today.
Some of my favorite characters were slated for an early death only to completely force their creators to give them more. Spike is the one I always think of, I guess I need to go read Barak now too :)
ReplyDeleteDelilah--I'd forgotten how sneaky Cullen was. SOmething about him having a sword at his throat at the end of Barak's book. Who would have expected such rash behavior from the one who was supposed to be calm and thoughtful?
ReplyDeleteAnna--thank you for sharing my stories with your sister. And I couldn't do away with Barak once I really saw him for the honorable man he was. Played merry heck with my plot line, I can tell you!
Tawania--I've often admitted that Trahern in Dark Defender was/is one of my favorites. If any man ever deserved a little happy in his life, it's gotta be him.
Abigai--the transformation of Spike over the course of the Buffie story line has always been one of my favorites--going from a cold-blooded killer to a man who literally went to hell to get his soul back, all to be a better man for a woman he knew would never love him the way he loved her. Amazing story telling.
Alexis
I love twitter! I've never heard of your Paladins, but saw the link on twitter and came over because it sounded so intriguing - omg! Now I have a whole new series to get! I'm so excited! Thank you for sharing some of the creative process with us :D
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway thank you very much Sounds so good can't wait to read it! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteHi Alexis! Thanks for the contest. I've been wanting to read the paladin series. I liked the Talion series a lot =)
ReplyDeleteI have the Talion series and a few of the Paladin series but have yet to read the paladin ones so I;d love to win this one!!=)
ReplyDeleteMahalo for the giveaway!
Thanks for stopping by Alexis! That is one fantastic giveaway, thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love reading book series. I have wondered how authors decide the order for the characters to get their own story. Sometimes I see minor characters in the first book and I immediately want them to have the next story but alas I know it's not always that simple. :)
I just recently started reading Urban Fantasy and I really would love to win this book!
ReplyDeleteI am a huge para romance fan and UF is right up there in my favorites!!
Thanks for the chance to win. I have only read one book, like it so much would love to read more of them.
