Product Review: Hide-a-Cover

Website: Hide-a-Cover
Price: $4.95 - $5.95

While I have always espoused the theory that there is no one eReader for everyone, I suppose I should add that for some people, “no eReader” is the right one.  I enjoy the convenience of eBooks, but I still purchase favorites in hardback.  It is difficult for any device to replace the permanence and enjoyment of having a physical book to add to my library.

Reading so many eBooks, however, does nothing to make me forget what has always been a significant challenge: hiding those horrific book covers.  Just as some covers are a work of art, adding to my enjoyment of the story, others are an embarrassment, causing me to hunch and hide when reading in public.

For those books that have been skipped by the “Good Taste” Cover Fairy (or visited by the “Please, Sir, May I Have Another” Cover Fairy), Hide-a-Cover provides a simple, funny, and economical solution.  When Jenni offered me a Hide-a-Cover to review,  I had so much trouble picking just one of the hysterical covers that I left the choice up to her.  She chose well, sending me the snicker-worthy “Vampires are hot!” cover shown above.  The graphic makes me want to stop people on the street and explain how funny it is.

For anyone who uses the public library these days, they will recognize the easy and effective plastic sleeve that forms the foundation of the Hide-a-Cover.  Inside this cover is a paper with that performs the “Hide” function, as well as some red ribbons to be used as a bookmark.  I had a few issues with the the fit of my Hide-a-Cover.  The paper portion of the cover could not quite stretch the last inch around the book in the back (In this instance, my copy of DRACULA, MY LOVE.  DRACULA, MY LOVE has a gorgeous cover, but I wanted to test the Hide-a-Cover reading experience).  Also, the hole-punch/ ribbon bookmarks didn’t look very finished.  However, despite these slight issues, the cover did an admirable job of protecting my book from damage as I slung it about in my purse.  Furthermore, those ribbon book marks really came in handy.

In the end, I feel the Hide-A-Cover does an excellent job of doing what it claims, concealing any book cover you’d rather not be waving around in public.  I’ve already ordered a small “Plate Tectonics and You” cover, with an eye on my TBR pile of naked chests and heaving bosoms.  I know, I know, isn’t that a great “problem” to have?

  1. I'd give someone a look for reading Plate Tectonics and You; a lot more so than if they were reading erotica :p

  3. Can you use them for more than one read? or do you think you have to trade them when you finish your book?

  4. Brad, they both rock my world.

Slow, I *loved* the vampire cover, Jenni is hysterical.

Sophie, you can definitely use them for more than one read, the plastic cover is hardy. Just be careful taking it on and off the books (for both the cover and your book's sake), and they should last you a long time. I found I wanted both the medium and small sizes in the house, though, as I never know what size cover I may be trying to hide.

  7. Hahahahaha I have a book cover, but it isn't nearly as fun as these. Now that I use my Kindle 90% of the time, I don't carry paperbacks that much. However, I'm still heading over to check out this site. Thanks for the post!

  8. I do love these. They are very creative and so much fun!

For the longest I've been making my own covers. In fact, I recently made giving away my Book Jackets a regular feature on my blog.

Take a look at my page:

I am planning to order a few of these for some family and friends who love to read!!

  10. I really like the pink Smut cover! Makes me want to get one.

I take it for the most part it fit really well? It wouldn't crease the spine?

  11. I use one of these since I actually do borrow books from the library. I always feel really self-conscious reading something with a ranchy cover.

  12. I could really use one of these, since I'd get a lot of stares on campus if I took my books with me to read in public. Students of literature can be really snotty sometimes. I especially like the Tectonics and Genome-mapping ones. I just wish the backs weren't standard on those two, it kind of ruins the illusion for me... But some covers are really inspired. :)

  13. Shera, there's a cute "how to install your Hide-a-Cover" bookmark that comes with the covers, you shouldn't have to break the spine of your book in order to put the cover on. I know that I didn't have any problems with the medium size, I'll comment again once I get to experiment with the small size.
