Review
How can I be so sad and so happy at the same time? I just read FOREVER, the last book in Maggie Stiefvater’s Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, and it broke my heart and thrilled my soul.
Maggie Stiefvater writes with such raw emotion that the character’s feelings soar off the page, sink into your bones and beat through your veins. Her writing has texture and taste and a resonance that lingers long after the last page.
Sam and Grace are still the breath and blood of this series, but they aren’t the only characters who I’ve come to love. In LINGER, I almost resented the addition of Isabelle and Cole, but that couldn’t be further from how I felt reading FOREVER. There is a volatile and self-destructive quality to their relationship that is so far from what Sam and Grace share that both couples are sharpened, complimented even, by the contrast.
While FOREVER is every bit as much Isabelle and Cole’s story, it is a more than fitting conclusion to this trilogy to have the roles of Sam and Grace so completely reversed. To read about Sam’s struggle as he watches the weather creeping colder and colder and knowing that it will ultimately claim Grace from him, and likewise Grace is the one now battling the fear of erasing herself when she shifts. Heartbreaking in a way that is different from SHIVER, but just as poignant.
So I am sad and happy. No more Sam and Grace. No more Cole and Isabelle. But I’m left feeling very satisfied with how their story ended or rather how it was left, because the ending is not a true ending, but it is an ending full of possibilities and hope. And I am very happy that there will be more lovely stories from Maggie Stiefvater. More romance, more worlds, and more beautiful writing to whisk me away.

So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina, were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever. Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister’s murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals who have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.
What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh — a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King, containing the power to create and destroy worlds.
In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves. Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman haunting her dreams? More important, who is Mac and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?
From the luxury of the Lord Master’s penthouse to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac’s journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and to make a choice that will either save the world... or destroy it.

Book Description
This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.
Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn't cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.
But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it's only me who's not firmly in my own skin.
Review
Book 2 in The Wolves of Mercy Falls Trilogy
Shiver touched my soul and LINGER reminded me why. The timeless and pure love story between Sam and Grace beats through every page of LINGER. Romantic, tragic, and hopeful in turn. LINGER is the kind of story that, well, lingers with a deliciously bittersweet ache.
Maggie breaths life into her characters animating them in such a way that you can sometimes hear the sound of their voices rather then just read their words on a page. One especially vivid new character is Cole, one of the new wolves that Beck made at the end of Shiver. The scenes that resonated most with me were the scenes that Isabel and Cole shared. Both of these characters are broken in their own estimation. Hazardous, even poisonous to others, and so consumed with guilt that its all they can do to breath sometimes.
Isabel sees in Cole another broken soul that she can exist with without any demands or expectations. Cole doesn't see much of anything initially. He is consumed with the pursuit of oblivion. Becoming a wolf to him is the drug that deadens life. Maggie explained her thought process behind creating Cole as a character whose “contrast to Sam would serve to draw the readers attention to the essential Sam-ness of his character. “
LINGER, while still beautifully moving and masterfully written, isn't quite as impactful as Shiver. The stakes with Sam and Grace were painfully high in Shiver and every page bleed with the urgent inevitability of Sam's departure (the temperature beginning every chapter almost made me cry as it dropped). In LINGER, the peril of this story doesn't present itself until later and the significance of it doesn't fully register until the final chapters. The split focus on Isabel and Cole as well as Sam and Grace added to that complacency. I loved all the characters in LINGER, but the addition of them drew me away from Sam and Grace.
LINGER is an exceptionally written book superior to most every other Paranormal YA novel (Shiver being a big exception). I'm thrilled that the movie rights to Shiver have been sold and can only hope this entire trilogy will find its way to a theater near me in the future. I have mixed emotions about Forever, the final book in this trilogy, releasing in July of 2011. I'm hopeful yet dreading the end for these characters who feel so real that their fates have become almost embarrassingly important to me. If Maggie Stiefvater was any less of a writer, I don't know if I could bear it.
