Description

When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?

But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore—free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.

But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny…

"Mead cooks up an appetizing debut that blends romantic suspense with a fresh twist on the paranormal."--Booklist

"The mix of supernatural mystery, romance and reluctant succubus is great fun." --Locus

"An engaging read."--Jim Butcher, New York Times bestselling author

Review

I’m such a snob.  I avoided this book for a long time primarily because I didn’t like the cover.  That’s pretty much it.  But the moment they repackaged it with a pretty new cover and I’m sold (well that and the fact that I loved Richelle’s Vampire Academy series.  Plus the $4.79 Kindle price didn’t hurt either).  Stupid, shallow, and thrifty.  That’s me.  Every time I write a review like this one, I swear I’ll never again judge a book by its cover because I might miss out on another fun and sexy read like SUCCUBUS BLUES.

Georgina is an excellent UF protagonist torn between what she needs to survive as a succubus: sex, and what she craves as a human: love.  The problem being that any one she actually cares about she can’t even touch because her succubus nature would steal away part of their life.  Whoever thought being a succubus would suck so much?

I was surprised by the lighter tone of SUCCUBUS BLUES compared to most books in the urban fantasy genre.  It’s almost like a cross between a traditional urban fantasy and a paranormal chick-lit title.  Light and funny in moments, smoldering and sexy the next, and dark and dangerous too.  Somehow they all work together and the result is a blast to read.  There are currently five books in the Georgina Kincaid series so far with number six, SUCCUBUS REVEALED, releasing on August 30, 2011, after only one book, I can tell that so many books to look forward to is a very good thing.

Description

Theia Alderson has always led a sheltered life in the small California town of Serendipity Falls. But when a devastatingly handsome boy appears in the halls of her school, Theia knows she's seen Haden before- not around town, but in her dreams.

As the Haden of both the night and the day beckons her closer one moment and pushes her away the next, the only thing Theia knows for sure is that the incredible pull she feels towards him is stronger than her fear.

And when she discovers what Haden truly is, Theia's not sure if she wants to resist him, even if the cost is her soul.

Review

When I think of the BIG titles that broke out a specific trend in Paranormal YA, I think of TWILIGHT and vampires, SHIVER and werewolves, HUSH HUSH and angels, WICKED LOVELY and faeries, and now I think we’re about to add FALLING UNDER to that list. You’ll have to read the book to find out what new trend it’s breaking.

In the tradition of those aforementioned titles, FALLING UNDER is part gothic romance, part paranormal mystery, and part coming of age story.  It’s breathtakingly written in a way that I think will elevate it above most of it’s peers (excepting maybe SHIVER).  The characters, even the secondary ones, are all given dimension and distinct motivations.  I didn’t necessarily like every character, but I believed they were real.

Specifically, FALLING UNDER is like a mash-up of HUSH HUSH and WICKED LOVEY.  Like, Patch, the romantic lead is dark and dangerous and his motives are rarely pure.  You’ll hate and love him a dozen times before the book is over.  And like the unseen Faerie realm, Theia’s ‘visits’ to Under are fractured and macabre.  It frighteningly easy to lose herself there and revel in the dance even while knowing it’s destroying her.

The entire book is surprisingly dark and delightful.  Even readers who are growing jaded by this genre should find something to enjoy here.  The ending is less of an ending and more of a setup for the next book, but it’s so provocative that I don’t even care that it’s a cliffhanger. All I care about is finding out when I can tumble back down this rabbit hole and fall back Under.

Ch-ch-ch-changes
by
Jill Myles

Life can’t remain stagnant forever, with the same people in our lives, doing the same things every day. Time passes, things change. It’s how reality works, and it’s how a fictional universe should work too. Characters have to grow and change, and people move in and out of their lives.

Anyone that’s writing a series can tell you that changes are some of the hardest – and yet most rewarding – parts of the story. No one likes to read a story in which no storylines resolve, and yet you can’t resolve everything or else what’s the point in reading further, right? You have to make changes. Big ones and small ones. Relationship changes, job changes…bigger changes.

I actually discussed (okay, whined) about this with my good friend Ilona Andrews. I wasn’t sure what direction I could take my characters and still make readers satisfied with the direction they were going. I was afraid to break my characters out of the mold they were in for fear of disappointing someone. Ilona, wise sage that she is, said something that made me change the way I think. She said, “It’s your world. You created it, you can break it. And then you can rebuild it again.”

Holy shit, I can break stuff. I can do whatever I want!

It was like the floodgates opened, y’all. Suddenly there was no storyline that was too small, no plot twist too scary. Things didn’t have to turn sunny-side up for my heroine all the time, as long as the plot moved in the right direction. Sure, the character might not like the changes, but no one’s asking her anyhow. ;)

The best, most compelling novels put the characters (and the readers) through the wringer. Look at Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. He’s not afraid to make changes. Look at Ilona’s Kate Daniels series. Big, big changes happened in Magic Bleeds, and the story is going to keep spiraling out from there. Another series I read recently was Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, and that one was mind-blowing in how much she ripped away from the main character. She tore her down and rebuilt her brand new again, and it was amazing and page-turning and brutal and delicious to read.

That’s what I want to give to my readers. Jackie goes through some changes in MY FAIR SUCCUBI. Small ones at first, then spiraling outward. Her world is going to change, and I’m pretty happy about that. There’ll be some consequences – there always are – but you can’t grow without change, right? And I definitely want her to keep growing. The first book in the series, GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI, was like a toe-dip into the deep end of the pool, and I’m waiting anxiously to have her dive in. And that day is coming very, very soon.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the ‘naughty parts’ of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the  Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own – stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes  alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

She wasn’t born with a pen in her hand, like most writers. Jill did stick the occasional crayon up her nose, but she eventually grew out of that.

Mostly.

imageWho Knew An Angel Could Get A Girl In So Much Devilish Trouble?

Her familiar B-cups have somehow become double Ds, her sex drive is insatiable, and apparently she had her first one-night stand ever...with a fallen angel. All she remembers is gorgeous Noah's oddly hypnotic blue eyes...and then a dark stranger whose bite transformed her into an immortal siren with a sexy Itch. With help from Noah, Jackie begins to adapt to her new lifestyle — until she accidentally sends Noah into the deadly clutches of the vampire queen and lands herself in a fierce battle for an ancient halo with the queen's wickedly hot righthand man. GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI book trailer

imageNOBODY SAID SUCKING WAS EASY.

With a hot new figure, her dream job as an archaeologist, and two gorgeous boyfriends to scratch her seductive Itch — an angel and a vampire — Jackie Brighton is totally getting the hang of life as a succubus. Then she accidentally knocks the pizza guy unconscious with her touch. Great — she's cursed. After striking a deal to get the curse lifted by a crafty demon, Jackie and her best friend Remy take a road trip to deliver a cryptic message to the nation's oldest succubus. Unfortunately, neither of her jealous lovers is talking to Jackie right now, and due to the curse, she's desperate to get her Itch scratched very soon. Their journey gets weirder with every mile — demonic possession, a charming stalker, a cryptic warning — and when they get to New Orleans, Jackie discovers a dangerous catch to her supernatural bargain. Someone wants her dead — again. Can a brainy vixen in a miniskirt outsmart the forces of evil?

imageIT SUCKS TO BE HER.

Living as a succubus has a bit of a learning curve, but with sexy fallen angel Noah to scratch her sensual Itch, Jackie Brighton is finally starting to feel ahead of the game. She almost doesn’t miss her gorgeous vampire master Zane—or his sinful, teasing mouth. She’s trying to convince herself of that, anyway. But Jackie’s past mistakes catch up with her, spinning her life out of control once more. Just as her friend Remy’s inner demon comes out to play, Noah and Jackie are arrested by the angelic Serim Council. When Jackie seizes the chance to escape, she falls right into Zane’s waiting arms. As she’s pulled into a game of cat and mouse between vampires and angels, she finds she must also choose between the two men in her life. Can she decide between Noah and Zane, or will she lose everything she’s ever wanted? Because there’s more at stake than just her heart. . . .

Want some Foreplay? Delve into the prequel to the Succubus Diaries by Jill Myles!!

Find out more

Review: For a limited time, Simon & Schuster is offering a free download of FOREPLAY by Jill Miles, which is a prequel to her Succubus Diaries series. If like me, you don’t have an eReader, and your eyes rebel at the idea of reading books on your computer screen, fear not.  FOREPLAY is a super short story (only 17 pages) which I had no trouble reading.

The story introduces us to Jackie Brighton, all around frump and self proclaimed geek as she meets two men (a vampire and a fallen angel) and becomes a succubi.  I haven’t had a chance to read Gentlemen Prefer Succubi or Succubi Like It Hot yet (I love her titles for this series.  The next one is called My Fair Succubi and is coming on December 28, 2010) but even I can recognize that a cute premise about an ugly duckling turned swan heroine being pursued by lots of gorgeous paranormal guys is a recipe for a super fun series.

FOREPLAY is short but sweet, its really more of a teaser for the series, but it does give new readers a glimpse into the Succubus characters, and fans who have already devoured the first two books will get to find out exactly how Jackie ended up in that dumpster.

Sexual Content: References to sex.
