Marta Acosta, author of the Casa Dracula series, is back on ATUF today after being one of my first ever interviews almost a year ago. The fourth book in the series, HAUNTED HONEYMOON, has just been published and Marta let me pick her brain about funny vampires, free books, Spike, and all things Casa Dracula. See below to win your own copy of the book.
Marta Acosta lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was a feral reader, roaming the stacks of the public library. She received a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing from Stanford University and has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, the Contra Costa Times, and Spaces Magazine. Marta lives with her husband and son and their crazy dog. An avid gardener, she likes independent films, funny novels, loud music and lively conversations. She’s always happy to hear from readers, even the ones who point out typos.
Interview
ATUF: You’ve recently posted not one but two full novels (Nancy’s Theory of Style & The Shadow Girl of Birch Grove) online as free reads. Which means that, in addition to being super generous and/or insane, you must be on to something because The Shadow Girl has since been bought by Tor Books and will be published in the not so distant future. So do you recommend this type of philanthropy for other authors?
MA: Hi, Abigail! I think the "or insane" applies. I'm an author who wants my stories to be read, as simple as that. I was unhappy that Nancy's Theory of Style was no longer available in print only a few months after its release. I don't know why this book just sunk out of sight when it's funny and touching, a great frothy read. (Ya think the cover with a roll of frickin toilet paper might have had something to do that that?) As for Shadow Girl, the manuscript was with editors and I'd been waiting and waiting to hear something. My feeling about both stories was, "Well, I'll just take my ball and go play somewhere else."
I posted them as free reads because I trust in my stories and I trust in readers. I knew that once people had a chance to read Nancy, they'd love the book. The same with Shadow Girl. I think it had over 26,000 reads before I took it off Scribd.com. Nancy's had 4,000 reads in just a few weeks.
I don't know that posting free reads helps book sales. I think if having your story read is more important to you than being published, shared sites are a great resource.
ATUF: As I mentioned in my recent review of Happy Hour At Casa Dracula, you broke the cardinal rule in urban fantasy: you cannot be funny. Authors can beat their heroine to within an inch of her life, make her love life look like something that even Jerry Springer would be shocked at, and have her dog run over by a bus full of demons, but they cannot be funny. What do you have to say for yourself?
MA: I wasn't writing straight urban fantasy, which is generally all action and fights; I was writing comedy! And it's a cardinal rule of comedy that you must be funny. When I first wrote Happy Hour at Casa Dracula, I'd never even heard the term "urban fantasy." Since then the sub-genre has exploded and books that were originally in other sections are being repackaged as UF. What I really like about UF is that it's a flexible category. It can include thrillers, mysteries, drama, romance, and even comedy, which is great since I like my characters to have fun, banter, flirt, party, etc.
ATUF: HAUNTED HONEYMOON is the forth book in the Casa Dracula series and marks a radical departure in terms of the cover art. I’m in love with the flirty Milagro and the blue/black cover wash. This is the the kind of imagery that I think should have branded the series all along. What are your thoughts on the cover and do you know who the artist is?
MA: I agree with you! I've been fighting for better book covers from the start and I wanted something that conveyed the fun, sexy, hip feel of the stories. People say you can't judge a book by its cover, but covers are what draw the reader and it doesn't matter how many great reviews you get if no one picks up the book. I think this cover finally gets it right and I'm thrilled with it and the new color scheme. The artist is Elena Dudina and you can see more of her work at her deviantART page.
ATUF: You’ve maintained that the Casa Dracula series is a comedy of manners with vampires. For new readers, how exactly do those elements blend together?
MA: The stereotypes of vampires as beautiful, wealthy and sophisticated seemed to mesh perfectly with comedy about social class. If vamps were all that and a bag of pommes frites, it seemed to reason that they'd be terrible snobs. In a comedy of manners, humor, clever banter, and skewering ideas about social class are the most important parts of the story. My bright, but aimless character Milagro gets involved with these successful vamps, and they treat her like a trashy gold-digger.
I like to think of my stories as delightful desserts. Desserts require technique and a deft hand, and they should seem effortless.
That said, Haunted Honeymoon is a little more plot-driven, with action, but the humor is still there. People have told me the series gets better with each book, and I'm not going to disagree with them since I love, love this story! I finally give my heroine Milagro the happy ending she's earned.
ATUF: I asked you before about a dream movie cast for the Casa Dracula series and you couldn’t answer because a few actresses were already looking at the books. Are there any developments on the film front?
MA: No, no developments. People always ask about movies, but the reality is that very few movies get made every year, but thousands and thousands of books are published every year. Lots of times you hear about books being optioned, but the option can pay one dollar for a two-year option. I had one offer like that and turned it down.
ATUF: And while we’re on the topic of book adaptations, what do think about the flurry of titles being optioned for both film and TV. Is there one you are particularly looking forward to or dreading?
MA: I never pay any attention to options because options are cheap and plentiful. The vast majority of stories optioned are never made into films.
ATUF: So what’s next for Milagro & Co.? Is Nancy going to be getting another book? Are you working on something else brand new?
MA: What's next for me is getting my editor's notes for The Shadow Girl of Birch Grove and working on that. I'm excited to be going to Tor and working with a great editor there. Then I'll be focusing on the adult gothic I'm writing. I hope readers will also like my more serious writing. Then I'll see what happens! Everything is quite up in the air.
ATUF: Your blog Vampire Wire is famous for ending every post with Gratuitous Videos Of The Day clips. Since we’re both self proclaimed Spike fans, can you dig us up a couple James Marsters clips that you love?
MA: Oh, you're making me do the work? You should be finding them on your own, but here are a few I like.
MA: Thanks for having me here at All Things Urban Fantasy, Abigail! Readers can find out more about my books and get free reads at my sites.

One copy of HAUNTED HONEYMOON by Marta Acosta
As the only human to survive vampire infection, Milagro de Los Santos has become quite a celebrity among the blood-drinking elite. Too bad the perks of her condition—increased strength, super-fast healing—don’t pay her condo fees. There are other complications too. She’s feeling guilty about her fling with enigmatic Vampire Council member Ian Ducharme, and pining for her ex-fiancé, Dr. Oswald Grant . . . the fabulous man whose kiss changed her life. It’s when Milagro — irked by Ian’s attentions to his neighbor — travels to London and enjoys a sexy flirtation of her own, that the blood really hits the fan.
Suddenly, those around her are dying gruesome deaths and Milagro’s being interrogated. Who would kill to set her up as a murder suspect? Milagro just wants to turn back the clock and have another chance to make things right, but no sooner has she escaped to Oswald’s ranch than an accident obliterates her memory. Will the murderer come after her now? And will amnesia spark a romantic do-over with Oswald—or will she make all the same mistakes before she ever gets to say "I do"?

Do you enjoy writting books about vampires? I love vampire love stories. I enjoyed the Twilight series so much. I could not put it down. I would be interested in knowing what other books you have wrote. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this book. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteHi Marta, I have not read any of your books but I know I will like as I do love humor in my books. I bought one vampire book and only read first chapter before I put it down. It was a little to much sex and not enough story. Hope I win Haunted Honeymoon and begin reading your books.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting giveaway Abigail.

Do you ever scare yourself while writing scary books?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
lovemybabysquid@yahoo.com
I love, love, LOVE Spike! He's dangerous, sexy and funny! I was so happy when Buffy and Spike hooked up. They are so dysfunctional together. Angel who? Best line - Out for a walk. Bitch. LOL!

I really enjoyed the Spike video. I do love him!!! I can't wait to start your series. It sounds great.

Hi, everyone! Thanks for commenting.
ReplyDelete-Velvet, I guess what inspires me the most is the fun of writing and entertaining others. It's the communication to the reader. When I hear that people have laughed or cried or cared for my characters, it just thrills me.
-Tore, what I like about paranormal stories and vampires is that the human characters have to think of ways to deal with incredible situations. I want characters to be challenged. I especially like when the danger is combined with touches of humor. That combination just appeals to me.
-Miss Kallie, I hope you'll try my books. The story and character are the most important aspects. They're sexy and flirty without being explicit. I'll leave that to other writers!
-Cathie, I am a major scaredy cat and I can't watch scary movies or read scary books. When I write something scary, it doesn't scare me at all because I know I just made it up.
-Marq and Cait45, if you're a James Marsters fan, you should see him as bad, fun, wild Captain John on the BBC series "Torchwood." The character is more cheerfully murderous and lusty than Spike. I hope you'll try my books!
More Milagro is a good thing! Can you tell us a bit more about the adult gothic you’re planning to write? Thanks.

Hi, LSU, I hate talking about the adult gothic because I'm terrified that someone will beat me to selling a story based on the time/locale. I'm still so early on and I'm not one of those writers who turns out several books a year. All I'm gonna say is: smut and lighthouses.
ReplyDeleteVan Pham, I'm dropping by bookstores next week and signing books, but this is mostly to meet bookstore staff and say hi. I'm going to about 12 stores in one day in the greater Bay Area and someone else is arranging the schedule. I will be at LitQuake in San Francisco Sunday at 1:00, I think. I always feel that I can connect with more people online and it's certainly less expensive than buying airline tix.
I see you don't like scary films. I'm the same way. However, I do enjoy those ghost hunting paranormal groups that have been on tv (like syfy's Ghost Hunters). Do you watch those at all?
ReplyDeleteOh, and LOVE the Spike vids. :)

Hey Marta, nice interview, I agree about the covers, being a guy, the older covers, seem a little too chick-lit? if thats the word I'm looking for, lol. Although I have since noticed the series because of the newest book and I'm looking forward to reading the series.
ReplyDeleteTdubwow@gmail.com
Marta,
ReplyDeleteWhat would be your perfect date night?
gaylynn13@hotmail.com
Melissa, nope, I don't watch the ghost hunters because I don't believe in ghosts. My dream is to find a "haunted" house and buy it cheap. The Amityville Horror house has several bedrooms and a swimming pool. I gotta check real estate listings.
ReplyDeleteJustPeachy, I've always been a fan of supernatural stories, not just vampires. I remember reading those kinds of tales when I was a kid and I always loved movies with angels and friendly ghosts. I was a fan of The X-Files and then I reluctantly checked out Buffy and was hooked.
Robin, I'm so happy with this cover! Elena did a terrific job.
Thomas, I'd always had a lot of men readers when I wrote satire and nonfiction. But when i wrote my novel, my publisher categorized my fiction as "women's fiction." Since women far outnumber men as book buyers, the publishers market to them. Besides, what's wrong with smart, clever chicklit?
Thomas, I should have said thanks for coming by. You are a brave fellow to venture into this high estrogen territory!
ReplyDeleteMarta, I really like comedies of manners, so your books are going on my list. :) They sound like fun reads.
ReplyDelete'80s Lady, my perfect date night now is different than what it was when I was single. Now I'm quite happy doing whatever with the fab husband -- going out to hear music, seeing a show or movie, hanging with friends, or staying at home. I still love going to see a great band at a small club.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on haunted Honey Moon! I love your writing style and can't wait for this.

Hi, everyone!
ReplyDelete-J, a lot of people like comedy-of-manners but they call them just comedies, or romantic comedies. If you think of popular shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Ugly Betty, even the Simpsons, they were comedy-of-manners.
-Pam, my very favorite spot is a hammock under an ancient walnut tree at my friend's ranch. No matter how hot it is, that space is always shady and peaceful. I save my special books to read there on my visits.
-Moira, what didn't I want to be! I wanted to be a poet, a hair stylist, an architect, a sketch comedy writer, a veterinarian, an artist...I got closest to comedy writer with my series.
-Elizabeth, that's easy! I'd love to fly. I like to travel but hate the cost and time of airlines. Imagine being able to zip across the country!
-Sandy, I don't have the skills to design my own covers, but I'd definitely like to be in control of deciding on the artwork and title. I suggested the style and theme of the Haunted Honeymoon cover, and I love Elena Dudina's illustration. I hope that if my books ever go into mass market, she'll be hired to re-do the other covers.
-Deedles, my books are very funny, seriously, I wouldn't kid you about that. I can show you the awards as proof!
-Athena, you have the book and you haven't read it yet!?! Start right now. I'll sit here and wait while you do and then we can talk about it.
Hi Marta & everyone
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't chime in yesterday (I'm pretty under the weather at the moment and couldn't even get to my computer until now). Hope everyone tries the Casa Dracula series. I'm still playing catch up and really enjoying the lighter, funnier side of urban fantasy.
Hi, Abigail, hope you're feeling better...and will enjoy my new book!
ReplyDeleteI was just introduced to this series and have to say that I was blown away by how clever it was. Usually funny paranormal ends up coming across to me a catty-"Sex in the City"-ish, but Marta did a fabulous job with her Casa Dracula series. Looking forward to reading Haunted Honeymoon and checking out that adult gothic book in the future. Marta you rock!
ReplyDeleterj3lwill@bendbroadband.com
3monstermom, thanks for your very kind words! I love writing humor and I'm so glad you enjoy it. I hope you'll like the way I wrap up the series -- people tell me it's the best book of all and I've decided to believe them!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I haven't read these yet but I'm very exited to try! Thanks for the interview Marta and Abigail!

Hi, JMS, if you'd like to see if you like my writing, you can check out my website for sample chapters. Hope you'll decide to read my series!
ReplyDeleteHey Marta...I have more of a comment & hopeful wish. I'm a huge fan of the casa dracula series. I hope that this book is so successful you're asked to continue with the series and that they choose to revamp all 3 covers to match Haunted Honeymoon. (finger's crossed)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great interview, I'm always curious to know if you weren't an author what other profession or hobbies would you engage in?

I actually found Nancy's Theory of Style at a used book store after it was no longer in print which is how I initially discovered you. I loved it for it's funny sweetness. Thanks for continuing to write! Makes my day better!
ReplyDeleterubymoonstone at gmail dot com
I love the series but hate that it's in trade paperback. I find that their size just doesn't work for a paperback, you know? Not to mention they're more expensive than Mass Market and yet I really don't see the benefit aside from being larger, and if size is what's important, why not go all the way and toss in the hard cover, you know? I'm student and I love to read but I really just can't afford trade paperbacks. Which is why it irks me so much that HAPPY HOUR made the switch and none of the others. I KNOW that it was planned - I've seen the cover for MIDNIGHT BRUNCH - but it never seemed to make it to the shelves.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea if it's even remotely possible that the series will be going Mass Market any time soon?!
Oh - and I forgot: vaderfangirl(AT)gmail(DOT)com
ReplyDeleteok, I have to say I have never read any of your books, but they look amazing and really need to get my hands on them. I also have never watched Buffy the vampire slayer. I know, and no I wasn't living in a closet LOL, I may have seen one or two episodes growing up, but now that you posted those amazing videos, I think I may have been missing out. I have heard so much about Spike and he looks hot in those vidoes. Who doesn't love a vampire bad boy. YUM. Since your a huge fan of Spike, did you incorprate any of his bad boy traits to your books??
ReplyDeletejune111@att.net
I LOVE SPIKE (and his vids of course!!!)
