**Visit Dark Faerie Tales today for her Spooky Legends Guest blog with J.K. Beck and a chance to win WHEN WICKED CRAVES**
We’re welcoming back Rachel Vincent to ATUF today for Spooky Legends, this time to celebrate the release of ALPHA, the sixth book in her excellent Shifters series (which I recently started and fell in love with). Faythe Sanders is the main character in Rachel’s Shifter series and Rachel is here to tell us all about Faythe’s take on the “El Chupacabra” urban legend and we’re giving away a copy of ALPHA or any of the Shifter books. See details below.
A recent transplant into the deep south, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks — seriously — and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.

You’ve heard of El Chupacabra, right? According to so-called cryptozoologists* , “ scientists” who search for living specimens of “ legendary” creatures, el chupacabra refers to an as-yet unproven-to-exist creature about the size of a coyote that kills and drinks the blood of small livestock. Literally, el chupacabra means “ the goat sucker.” Sounds more like a description of your ex, right? But what the term actually refers to is a rash of dead livestock including cows, chickens, and yes, goats, most of which were allegedly drained of their blood through 2-3 puncture marks in their necks or chests, by one of the creatures in question. It so happens that, as a “ legendary” creature myself (as the world’ s first and only female Alpha, I’ m technical super-legendary), I have a bit of insider information about this supposed bloodsucker. So, does el chupacabra exist?Well…yes. And no. Before I explain that, let me clear up a couple of inaccuracies common in el chupacabra stories.
- El chupacabra is as big as a small bear. Um…no. That description must have come from those same men who also seriously overestimate the size of their own…assets.
- Proof of the existence of el chupacabra exists in the remains found in Central America and Texas. Um, no it doesn't. Those were coyotes with mange. For real. Look it up.
Thanks so much Rachel (and Faythe!) Come back soon.

One copy of ALPHA (or any of the Shifters books) by Rachel Vincent

YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE FAYTHE...
The unscrupulous new Council chair has charged Jace, Marc, and me with trespassing, kidnapping, murder, and treason. Yeah, we've been busy. But now it's time to take justice into our own hands. We must avenge my brother's death and carve out the rot at the heart of the Council.
It's not going to be easy, and loss seems unavoidable, but I have promised to protect my Pride, no matter what. With a target on my back and Marc at my side, I'm heading for a final showdown that can--that will--change everything forever. A showdown I'm not sure I'm ready for.
But life never waits until you're ready.

Great post! We got to meet Rachel at the Smart Chicks Kick it tour! She is funny and very nice!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! I had a lot of fun watching Monster Hunters as a kid. Even though it seemed like they were trying a BIT too hard to make us think something was out there, I still loved to watch it!
ReplyDeleteSo the cryptos are being kept safe by look for something that is 100 percent something else, sounds oddly logical.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, thanks. When I hear “El Chupacabra” it reminds me of Scooby Doo, my kids loved that movie!
ReplyDeleteI loved the post and the info that all of these mythical creatures we've been searching for are really shapeshifters. I guess we should just give it up and leave well enough alone, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI'm fascinated by the whole field of cryptozoology. I do wonder about the Loch Ness Monster (probably more wishful thinking as opposed to actual evidence) but El chupacabra is one that seems to be more plausible to a lot of people. Thanks to Faythe for clearing up the facts for us ;)
ReplyDeleteI loved the Shifter series and I loved how it got wrapped up in Alpha.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read Alpha, I am currently on Prey. Love the series.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post. Your Shifter series looks like good reads.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I just finished reading Alpha last week and it was awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis was a cool post. I have all 5 of your 6 books and I am going to have to have my mind examined as to why I didn't start reading them after I bought book 3. ( Thats part of my little system) But.. If I can win Alpha that would be like the second set of 3 and I can read you in marathon form :) and not ruin the program. I have heard tons of great stuff about you and your books in almost every blogs I follow. I am only a reader, my blog is in a holding pattern due to operator error, it just isn't quite working out for me no matter how hard I try but anyway I do talk to people in my yahoo digests so I could talk about you there. I hope this will help qualify me to enter this contest and if not I understand. Oh and that info on the El Chupaca was great, where did those pictures come from?

Thanks for the great post and giveaway!
ReplyDeleteGreat post and El Chupacabra seems like an interesting "myth" to read about, especially when you know there are people out there who swear they actually saw it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Faythe! I can now get my husband and sons to stop believing all that stuff on TV. The baby Thunderbird is spot on.
ReplyDeleteOkay that El chupacabra thingy gave me the heebie jeebies!
ReplyDeleteIt was great reading about it though.
Thanks for having Rachel and hosting the giveaway
Ha! Love it. :)
ReplyDeleteOh great post! I've heard of that creature before but I didn't know those little tidbits.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I think of bigfoot as a shifter but I hadn't really thought about El Chupacabra, thanks for giving me something to think about!!!
