*LINGER will be released on July 13, 2010*
Book Description
This is the story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.
Just a few months ago, it was Sam who was the mythical creature. His was the disease we couldn't cure. His was the good-bye that meant the most. He had the body that was a mystery, too strange and wonderful and terrifying to comprehend.
But now it is spring. With the heat, the remaining wolves will soon be falling out of their wolf pelts and back into their human bodies. Sam stays Sam, and Cole stays Cole, and it's only me who's not firmly in my own skin.
Review
Book 2 in The Wolves of Mercy Falls Trilogy
Shiver touched my soul and LINGER reminded me why. The timeless and pure love story between Sam and Grace beats through every page of LINGER. Romantic, tragic, and hopeful in turn. LINGER is the kind of story that, well, lingers with a deliciously bittersweet ache.
Maggie breaths life into her characters animating them in such a way that you can sometimes hear the sound of their voices rather then just read their words on a page. One especially vivid new character is Cole, one of the new wolves that Beck made at the end of Shiver. The scenes that resonated most with me were the scenes that Isabel and Cole shared. Both of these characters are broken in their own estimation. Hazardous, even poisonous to others, and so consumed with guilt that its all they can do to breath sometimes.
Isabel sees in Cole another broken soul that she can exist with without any demands or expectations. Cole doesn't see much of anything initially. He is consumed with the pursuit of oblivion. Becoming a wolf to him is the drug that deadens life. Maggie explained her thought process behind creating Cole as a character whose “contrast to Sam would serve to draw the readers attention to the essential Sam-ness of his character. “
LINGER, while still beautifully moving and masterfully written, isn't quite as impactful as Shiver. The stakes with Sam and Grace were painfully high in Shiver and every page bleed with the urgent inevitability of Sam's departure (the temperature beginning every chapter almost made me cry as it dropped). In LINGER, the peril of this story doesn't present itself until later and the significance of it doesn't fully register until the final chapters. The split focus on Isabel and Cole as well as Sam and Grace added to that complacency. I loved all the characters in LINGER, but the addition of them drew me away from Sam and Grace.
LINGER is an exceptionally written book superior to most every other Paranormal YA novel (Shiver being a big exception). I'm thrilled that the movie rights to Shiver have been sold and can only hope this entire trilogy will find its way to a theater near me in the future. I have mixed emotions about Forever, the final book in this trilogy, releasing in July of 2011. I'm hopeful yet dreading the end for these characters who feel so real that their fates have become almost embarrassingly important to me. If Maggie Stiefvater was any less of a writer, I don't know if I could bear it.

Thanks for the great review!!! I kind of expected Linger not to live up to what Shiver was since I thought the ending of Shiver was so great and complete, but Im still glad to know it was a great book! I can't wait to read it!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited. Shiver was a beautiful book, glad to hear this one is just as good.
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm a little confused. I originally heard that Linger was going to be released on the 20th, but the other day at borders I saw like 6 or 7 copies in store for like i think 17 dollars or 18. So I was confused, but didn't buy it because I had other things I had planned to buy. And you say its releasing the 13th. D: Now I'm SUPER confused.
ReplyDeleteiluvhersheys - If the worst thing I could find to say about this book is that it wasn't quite as good as SHIVER...that still makes it an excellent book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
ReplyDeleteTiah - I still get this feeling of euphoric bliss when I think about SHIVER, and LINGER almost as good :)
silversleep - They bumped up the release date just yesterday, but Maggie announced that some stores were stocking them already. If you can get it already, go for it :)
I cannot wait to read this!!
ReplyDeleteBut I'm terrified of the P.A.B.D. I'm bound to suffer from afterward...
Tara - You're going to have spell that one out for me :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome review! Can't wait to read it. Although I'm wondering if I'll get it early. I preorder it from Borders online and they still show it releasing July 20.
ReplyDeleteTo quote Inigo from the Princess Bride, "I hate waiting." :)
I think I hate you for being able to read Shiver early Abigail. Sorry, that's just the green-eyed monster talking. I'm so happy to hear that you loved this book, albeit, not quite as much as Shiver.
ReplyDeleteThat temperature reading at the beginning of each chapter was brilliant! It literally made me shiver with despair.
Jessica - Hmmm. I wouldn't count on them shipping it early. Amazon still has the old release date too.
ReplyDeleteRebecca - I kinda hate me too. That is definitely the best ARC I ever got. But they did bump up the release date to the 13th. Most stores started stocking it already. Go. Read. Review :)
"characters who feel so real that their fates have become almost embarrassingly important to me"
ReplyDeletehaha I'm right there with you.
I started reading this trilogy after seeing your review of shiver and I'm so glad I did. I've immensely enjoyed both installments. Thanks for your excellent reviews.
Marn - Have you read her Faerie books yet (Lament & Ballad)? Sooo good too. And Maggie has a short coming out next month in the anthology Kiss Me Deadly :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the addition of Cole and Isabelle into the narration in "Linger!" Even though it did draw attention away from Sam and Grace, I think that was probably for the best, otherwise the series could have turned into too-sappy love-fest, something that turns me off of most paranormal novels. Great review! :)

Book Review of "Linger" by Maggie Stiefvater
Alyssa - You may have a point. It will be interesting to see how both romance play out in the conclusion. I'm so going to miss this series :)
