Description:

Turner Construction's latest restoration project is a historic Queen Anne Victorian in San Francisco. This time general contractor Mel Turner has to work around the owners who insist on sticking around- along with some ghosts that insist in their own way that the work stops...

The ghosts aren't the only ones standing in the way of the renovations. A crotchety neighbor, Emile Blunt, secretly wants this house, and could be behind some of the disturbances. But when Emile is found dead, it's Mel who appears guilty. Now she must restore the building-and her reputation-before it's too late.

  1. Sounds like a fun book. Guess I'll add it to the OMG TBR list. :)

  2. The hubs has mad construction skills, so things don't usually go wrong with our renovations. However, he works on his own time schedule and no amount of prompting will make things go faster. Therefore, anytime he starts a project, I prepare myself for a job that should only take a couple of days to take 1-2 mos. A longer job can easily take 1-2 years. Plus, it will never be 100% done. 95% is about as good as he can manage before he totally loses interest.

  3. Oopsie. Hit submit too soon! My reno-hell-vation was the great bathroom redo. This simple little two DAY reno took TWO WEEKS! (Thankfully, I have very kind and understanding neighbors, who had given me a key for...well, you know.) Also, the cost was 4 times what was budgeted. Good times.
    *sigh*

  5. We hired some guys to fix our roof because of some storm damage. They gave us an estimate of it being only $700. It took them two and a half weeks to finish it. It's wasn't pleasant hearing them on my roof. Some problems "happened" along the way and the total cost was $1000. Yeah, I'm never hiring them again.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. The story and the cover make it sound like a great book. My mom wants to redo our kitchen and it causing me a huge headache. Doing a whole house sounds crazy to me.

  10. Sorry, I didn't see the question. I haven't had any disastrous renovations, but I've had to correct a number of them in the house I'm living in. The previous owners were do it yourselfers, but didn't have a clue what they were doing. I've had kitchen cabinets fall off the wall, while I was standing there, laminated kitchen counters that looked like a five year old did them, tile floors that I had to rip out and redo, you name it.

  11. What disastrous renovation/home improvement projects have you experienced?

Our renovated bathroom was somewhat of a disaster for a couple of reasons, I live with my older parents and we needed to take out the tub in one bathroom and make it into a shower stall because of their health. The first thing that went wrong was that my dad hired a contractor that didn't seem to like to follow instructions, then he lost instructions, then he didn't follow the designer's plan and we had to go and find more tile but there were no more in that design so we had to change the pattern. Then he didn't bother to make sure that the hand held shower head would fit in the wall hanger he got (and it didn't and still doesn't). What should have taken 24 hours of labor (according to the designer and the store that sold us the shower) ended up taking 44 hours, which meant we were down to one working bathroom in the house for 6 days and it ended up costing us a lot more than it should have.

  12. Pretty much any home improvement project my husband and I try is a disaster. Yet, we keep buying older houses that need work. Currently we have a 2nd bath room that has been "demo'ed" for renovation for over a year!

  13. I watched a friend of mine try to put in a garbage disposal. Things worked great for a little bit and then started to back up. He put a couple of the parts on backwards and he ended up forcing them when they wouldn't fit. I would rather hire someone than try to do it myself.

  14. I once tried to fix a faucet but the water wasn't completely shut off

  15. Our bathtub fell through the dining room wall. The angle to move it into place was judged a bit wrong. The tub and the contractor when through to the next room. Can still see the patch on sunny days.

  17. When I was in high school I came to no bathrooms. My mom was bored one day and decided to rip them out.

  18. Hmmm...nothing disastrous has happened. My family isn't the best with "renovating" things. Although with the last bookshelf I bought we did have a helluva time putting it together! So stressful trying to put one of em together!

  20. Sounds like a great read. I haven't had any disasterous home improvement projects though.

  21. I'm a renter so I've never had to deal with a renovation project gone crazy.

  22. I haven't experienced any yet! Though I do know the man has a bad habit of not using the stud finder when hanging stuff up *namely a specific curtain rod was very challenging* It took him a week and like 20 holes later before the thing got put up.

  23. Oops. My bad. I entered the giveaway not reading the "US only" phrase. So sorry. I really like Juliet Blackwell's previous series so I got really excited. Hehe

  24. Renovations, no. But... I did watch my parents build their house, a long time back. To this day, there's still some windows without windowsills, but all in all, it came out pretty well.

Please do enter me in the contest. :) I love JB and would love this, I'm sure.
