Life without Fantasy

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without vampires and werewolves and the fae, oh my? No dragons or gargoyles or selkies in the sea. No mermaids or genies or shapeshifting jaguars. No pixies or sprites or brownies to plague us. No sphinxes, or griffins, or sea serpents either. No trolls or goblins or man-eating zombies.
What would the world come to if we didn’t have all our fantastical creatures to dream about, to love and hate and want to learn more?
Boring, comes to mind. Did you know that some people really don’t like the notion of fantasy? Or even if they’ll tolerate some, not the more hardcore urban fantasy, aka, vampires, or werewolves or other kinds of shifters?
I was at a Christmas party the other night, and there were two sides to the coin…those who were fascinated about the idea that I write about werewolves and vampires and jaguar shifters and the fae. And those who were not.
I have to smile when I think about going to Barnes and Noble to autograph some of my wolf books and three male store clerks were excited, until they learned the werewolf stories weren’t horror, but…horror—happily-ever-after romance!
Or to smile at the volunteer who asked if my werewolf books were shelved under fiction or nonfiction.
Or the werewolf who wrote me and told my fans to get in touch with him if they wanted to know a real werewolf.
Fantasy. Got to love it. I love fantasy whether it’s in a historical type setting, or urban fantasy where the fantasy comes to life in a contemporary world, or futuristic fantasies. They’re all fun to read, to get to know the fantastical creatures and worlds, to leave our humdrum lives behind and experience something new and different, and real. At least it should seem real.
Oh sure, reading true harrowing experiences are intriguing, or straight romantic suspense, and I admit I LOVE historical romance, any era.
But still, I have a total fascination for the paranormal, having loved ghost stories and Dracula since I was young, and later, wanting to save werewolves and the vampires from extinction. They’re only human too and need just as much loving as the rest of us do. Don’t you agree?
So what would we do in a world without fantasy?
I know I’d go into withdrawal. What about you?

Great post. Yes, I can well imagine how the reaction of others could be spilt either way. Oh, and some 'werewolf' mailing you is ... um ... either pretty said, hilarious or downright hot. I can't quite decide which.

Oh, shoot, just found the question. Um ... one of my favourite werewolf romances ... I don't really know as most werewolf stories/series I've read have been UF, like Otherworld series or Mercy Thompson--I'm pretty new to reading PNR. :o)

ReplyDeleteProbably the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. With the coyote/werewolf romance between Mercy and Adam, but I like all the werewolf characters in the series.

Patrica Briggs Mercy Thompson series is my favorite ever!
ReplyDeleteI'd choose Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series as my favorite werewolf romance, even though I think it's more of an urban fantasy, there are romantic elements.
ReplyDeleteI happen to like Kelly Armstong's Women of the Otherworld series, while not strictly werewolves, it's an intriguing one.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite werewolf romance would have to be Dee-Ann and Ric from Big Bad Beast by Shelly Laurnston. They could only seem to fight it for a few decades, lol.
