Ch-ch-ch-changes
by
Jill Myles

Life can’t remain stagnant forever, with the same people in our lives, doing the same things every day. Time passes, things change. It’s how reality works, and it’s how a fictional universe should work too. Characters have to grow and change, and people move in and out of their lives.

Anyone that’s writing a series can tell you that changes are some of the hardest – and yet most rewarding – parts of the story. No one likes to read a story in which no storylines resolve, and yet you can’t resolve everything or else what’s the point in reading further, right? You have to make changes. Big ones and small ones. Relationship changes, job changes…bigger changes.

I actually discussed (okay, whined) about this with my good friend Ilona Andrews. I wasn’t sure what direction I could take my characters and still make readers satisfied with the direction they were going. I was afraid to break my characters out of the mold they were in for fear of disappointing someone. Ilona, wise sage that she is, said something that made me change the way I think. She said, “It’s your world. You created it, you can break it. And then you can rebuild it again.”

Holy shit, I can break stuff. I can do whatever I want!

It was like the floodgates opened, y’all. Suddenly there was no storyline that was too small, no plot twist too scary. Things didn’t have to turn sunny-side up for my heroine all the time, as long as the plot moved in the right direction. Sure, the character might not like the changes, but no one’s asking her anyhow. ;)

The best, most compelling novels put the characters (and the readers) through the wringer. Look at Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. He’s not afraid to make changes. Look at Ilona’s Kate Daniels series. Big, big changes happened in Magic Bleeds, and the story is going to keep spiraling out from there. Another series I read recently was Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, and that one was mind-blowing in how much she ripped away from the main character. She tore her down and rebuilt her brand new again, and it was amazing and page-turning and brutal and delicious to read.

That’s what I want to give to my readers. Jackie goes through some changes in MY FAIR SUCCUBI. Small ones at first, then spiraling outward. Her world is going to change, and I’m pretty happy about that. There’ll be some consequences – there always are – but you can’t grow without change, right? And I definitely want her to keep growing. The first book in the series, GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI, was like a toe-dip into the deep end of the pool, and I’m waiting anxiously to have her dive in. And that day is coming very, very soon.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the ‘naughty parts’ of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the  Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own – stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes  alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

She wasn’t born with a pen in her hand, like most writers. Jill did stick the occasional crayon up her nose, but she eventually grew out of that.

Mostly.

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi,  Succubi Like It Hot,
and My Fair Succubi

Jackie was an ordinary museum docent until a mysterious vampire and a fallen angel made her into a succubus. Now a sexy immortal, she’s caught between an age-old war between angels, demons, and the immortals exiled to earth. When everyone else is choosing sides, which will she pick? The good guy or the bad boy? Maybe she wants both…

imageWho Knew An Angel Could Get A Girl In So Much Devilish Trouble?

Jackie Brighton woke up in a Dumpster this morning, and her day has only gotten weirder. Her familiar B-cups have somehow become double Ds, her sex drive is insatiable, and apparently she had her first one-night stand ever...with a fallen angel. All she remembers is gorgeous Noah's oddly hypnotic blue eyes...and then a dark stranger whose bite transformed her into an immortal siren with a sexy Itch. With help from Noah, Jackie begins to adapt to her new lifestyle — until she accidentally sends Noah into the deadly clutches of the vampire queen and lands herself in a fierce battle for an ancient halo with the queen's wickedly hot righthand man. Who just happens to be the vampire who originally bit her. How's a girl supposed to save the world when the enemy's so hard to resist?

Read the first chapter online here.

GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI book trailer

imageNOBODY SAID SUCKING WAS EASY.

With a hot new figure, her dream job as an archaeologist, and two gorgeous boyfriends to scratch her seductive Itch — an angel and a vampire — Jackie Brighton is totally getting the hang of life as a succubus. Then she accidentally knocks the pizza guy unconscious with her touch. Great — she's cursed. After striking a deal to get the curse lifted by a crafty demon, Jackie and her best friend Remy take a road trip to deliver a cryptic message to the nation's oldest succubus. Unfortunately, neither of her jealous lovers is talking to Jackie right now, and due to the curse, she's desperate to get her Itch scratched very soon. Their journey gets weirder with every mile — demonic possession, a charming stalker, a cryptic warning — and when they get to New Orleans, Jackie discovers a dangerous catch to her supernatural bargain. Someone wants her dead — again. Can a brainy vixen in a miniskirt outsmart the forces of evil?

imageIT SUCKS TO BE HER.

Living as a succubus has a bit of a learning curve, but with sexy fallen angel Noah to scratch her sensual Itch, Jackie Brighton is finally starting to feel ahead of the game. She almost doesn’t miss her gorgeous vampire master Zane—or his sinful, teasing mouth. She’s trying to convince herself of that, anyway. But Jackie’s past mistakes catch up with her, spinning her life out of control once more. Just as her friend Remy’s inner demon comes out to play, Noah and Jackie are arrested by the angelic Serim Council. When Jackie seizes the chance to escape, she falls right into Zane’s waiting arms. As she’s pulled into a game of cat and mouse between vampires and angels, she finds she must also choose between the two men in her life. Can she decide between Noah and Zane, or will she lose everything she’s ever wanted? Because there’s more at stake than just her heart. . . .

  24. What a great post Jill! It can be scary accepting a big change with a beloved character/series that is seemingly "negative" but I've learned to trust an author to love her/his characters/story enough to be taking it in a great direction in the grand scheme. I can only think of one exception to that but won't name names. lol

Anywho, thanks for the interesting post and giveaway. :)

  68. I would love to read this series. I think that although I hate to see the characters I come to care about have to go through terrible ordeals, thats also kind of what makes me care about them in the first place. I guess its kind of that even in fantasy fiction some things mirror real life, where the things that happen to us and how we deal and get through those things make us grow as a person or as a character. The books series that I love the most truly show that growth and make me truly relate to and care about those characters. Great guest post!!
