Author Comments:
I've always loved the covers Cliff Neilson has done for the MI series. Each one is fun and different in its own right. For the "second cycle" of The Mortal Instruments we wanted to do something that would link the cover aesthetically to the earlier covers while having a different quality that announced that this was a new chapter in these characters' lives. We decided that each of the Second Cycle covers is going to have two characters on it — in this case Clary and Simon.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
I love fiery hair, and Clary’s stunning.  I really like how they are distinguishing this second cycle from the first three books by showing faces and featuring two characters on the cover.

Description:

“Love, blood, betrayal and revenge — the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. Simon Lewis is having some trouble adjusting to his new life as a vampire, especially now that he hardly sees his best friend Clary, who is caught up in training to be a Shadowhunter—and spending time with her new boyfriend Jace. Not to mention that Simon doesn’t quite know how to handle the pressure of not-quite-dating two girls at once. What’s a daylight-loving vampire to do? Simon decides he needs a break and heads out of the city—only to discover that sinister events are following him. Realizing that the war they thought they’d won might not yet be over, Simon has to call on his Shadowhunter friends to save the day — if they can put their own splintering relationships on hold long enough to rise to the challenge.”

…Can I just say how much I love this? I have truly been blessed with some amazingly awesome covers, and this one is no exception. The background is a train yard, which see a little action this time around. And the super-cool lightning is a fun plot point, as well. Evy looks particularly bad-ass in this one, and the tag line says it all: She was born for this fight--no matter how many times it kills her.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
The fun thing about this series cover art, is that Evy gets to be a different person in each one.  The necklace and knife are the only constants.  I love that the setting always gets so much attention to.  Her shirt seems to be getting longer in each one… I wonder if that is significant?

My Thoughts: Thumbs down
I’m not a big fan of these covers, excepting UNFALLEN DEAD, but I’m not wowed by this latest cover.
Still hope to start reading them eventually as they sound good.

And it’s exactly what I’d hoped for. I’m guessing that there will be minor changes (like quotes and other text added.) Her name is Ash. And, yes - she might just use a broomstick.

My Thoughts: Thumbs up
It would have been nearly impossible to top the cover DEMON BLOOD, (I’m still bummed it didn’t get nominated for this year’s Cover Art awards) but this is a good follow up.  It does look A LOT like LEGACIES by Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill.

Description:

Recently escaped from a mental hospital where she spent the past two years, Ash is searching for answers, trying to discover who she is…and what she’s become. Tattoos mark her skin – which is sometimes crimson. Her eyes glow when she’s angry. And icy fear is a constant companion, along with a desperation she doesn’t understand, and a torturous pain that she can barely remember. Fueled by vague memories and newspaper reports, she searches for Nicholas St. Croix – a man who, five years ago, was suspected to have murdered a human woman…who looks exactly like Ash.
Nicholas St. Croix doesn’t know if he can trust the demon wearing the face of the woman he once loved – but if he wants to find out, he’ll have to keep her alive. Because the past is catching up to Nicholas, in the form of a demon commanded by Lucifer himself to sacrifice Ash and open a gateway to Hell. Protecting her means that Nicholas will find himself irrevocably changed, body and soul – and unaware that if he saves Ash’s life, Nicholas might be eternally damning the only woman he’s loved…

  1. The new immortals instrument cover is stunning. I love how it keeps to the same design style, but is distinguishable. The Clary looks a little older then I pictured her.

  2. Shera - I like the older look for Clary this time. I'm betting it will suit the new cycle.

  3. Am I the only one who doesn't like the CoFA cover? Clary hair looks like some kind of orange, vaguely hair-shaped cloud that's just floating behind her head. Both she and Simon look like mannequins.

  4. Luisa - I love it. Flaming hair is a fav of mine always. Did you like the previous covers in the series?
