From the Beginning to THE END

Heart of the Wolf (Heart of the Wolf, #1)Imagine another dimension where the world actually had shifters who could change from human form to wolf. Who kept their differences secret from the human population to prevent from being abused or analyzed to learn of their curative powers or longevity, or wanted them destroyed because they were “alien” to what most humans thought were normally acceptable.

Enter the world of wolves—werewolves, that is.

Why urban fantasy romance? Why werewolves? Why wolves?

Seduced by the Wolf (Heart of the Wolf, #5)Suspending belief is the fun for me. I write everything from romantic suspense to romantic comedy, although my suspense has humor and my comedy has conflict. In my werewolf stories, I get to add an additional dimension. My love of the paranormal, of fantasy, yet I love true stories, so making them as realistic as possible is the fun for me. Adventure, mystery, suspense, romance and humor are all ingredients in my stories that I can’t live without. I don’t plan anything, don’t have a cookbook recipe on how to do it. It just happens.

Oftentimes when I’m doing final edits on a book, such as #7, after they’ve been approved by my editor, I’ll already be writing book #9, so it’s been a while since I’ve reread the earlier book. And I wonder how I ever got from the beginning to the ending when it sounds like I’ve planned it out all along. But I’m not quite there yet with the current book I’m working on. Some writers work best with planning their stories from the beginning. If I tried to force myself to do that, I’d just stare at a blank monitor all day.

Heart of the Highland Wolf (Heart of the Wolf, #7)While I was doing final line edits on Heart of the Highland Wolf, I didn’t even remember some of the scenes. As I write, they just come to me. An idea will flit across my brain, and if I can catch the trigger and think about it a little, sometimes it will turn into a full fledged scene.

I’ll be getting dressed for work, and I won’t consciously be thinking about the current story I’m working on, which right now is book 9, The Wolf and the SEAL, but all of a sudden, I’ll begin to hear the dialogue, sometimes see the setting that the characters are in, and if I don’t jot it down, even an hour later, it can be gone. So I have to catch the scene right then and there. Sometimes, I’ll turn off the lights at night and I’m planning on sleeping, not writing, and that’s when a scene comes to me. It’s dark. My mind is free to wander when it’s supposed to shut down. And then here is a terrific scene.

Legend of the White Wolf (Heart of the Wolf, #4)On come the lights and I’m back to writing. Usually it’s a short scene and then I can go to sleep after that. But if I think to remember it in the morning, forget it.

So how to come up with the ideas? Questions help to evoke more thoughts, more scenes. Brainstorming.

Is Bigfoot real? Some think so. Sometimes a kernel of a notion sticks in the memory banks, and someday that one little bit of information becomes part of a story. In Legend of the White Wolf, Bigfoot, or the notion some think he’s real, came to be in the story. It all started with my mother taking a course for senior citizens at Baylor University. It had to do with demystifying myths, or some such thing. The instructor told them a story about Bigfoot, and for a year or so, I thought about it, and finally found just the place to introduce it.

To Tempt the WolfIt’s a true story, you see. But making it part of a fictional work, makes it more fun and more real.

Creatures that have been myths for ages are finally unearthed and then the myths become reality. So in my world, werewolves are myths—to regular humans. But for werewolves, perfectly real.

I love to banter back and forth about the myths and how unreal they are as I write my tales. We were having a discussion about vampires on an author loop the other day, and it made me smile. But vampires are supposed to be written a certain way. So are werewolves. Hmm?

Destiny of the Wolf(Heart of the Wolf, #2)To me that’s half the fun of writing urban fantasy. As authors, we decide what’s real and what’s not. And hopefully our readers will play along and become part of the—pack. :)

In Wolf Fever, the cast from Destiny of the Wolf is back. About the time I was writing the story, the World Health Organization was warning about a possible flu epidemic. So that got me to thinking about werewolves, and how they would handle such a crisis. Carol, the psychic nurse, sees the crisis coming, but no one believes her. And Chester Ryan McKinley wants to prove she really doesn’t have psychic powers, while she believes his interest in seeing her goes so much deeper. And somehow from that beginning, the end eventually comes!

I have to warn that even if you have your flu shots, you might get Wolf Fever. In book stores now!

Thanks so much, Abigail, for having me! And good luck to everyone who comments!

  8. Thanks so much, Kristen! I fell in love with wolves when I was a kid and read Jack London's tales: Call of the Wild and White Fang. In one of the stories, the wolf pup explores his territory alone, and I think that had something to do with my wanting the wolves to be like real wolves, yet still with a human's thought processes also--not a mindless beast, or a wolf who was all wolf like in some of the earlier werewolf horror stories. I loved how wolves have families, are loyal and protective and mate for life. :) Golden eagles and road runners and other animals mate for life also, but there's something about the family part of the equation I love to touch on. When the eagles offspring are ready to fly away, they do and that's the end of the family unit. Great question!

Tore, I've written Deadly Liaisons, a vampire romantic suspense, and two YAs, The Vampire...In My Dreams, and Deidre's Secret. I also have two Highland medieval stories out, Winning the Highlander's Heart and The Accidental Highland Hero. :)

Thanks so much, Jennifer! Yes, hot, hot covers. I love them! They're working on Dreaming of the Wolf's cover now, and Heart of the Highland Wolf I want to frame! :) Oh, as to your question, yes, I've written a shifter story where the brother is a dragon and the sister a panther. It's a futuristic fantasy I wrote on a whim and I loved writing it! Here's what happened. This editor solicited short stories that showed the importance of a coffee shop and a book store. So I wrote the short story about a scene in the future on a far distant planet. And he said it was by invitation only, and so therefore my short was instantly rejected. I so loved the story and the concept and the characters, I turned it into a full length novel.

Maybe someday it'll be published. :) I still need to edit it and I haven't ever sent it out, but I do love it. :)

Hi, Debbie! My great aunt nearly died from the flu in 1918. She was volunteering in a hospital in Canada to help the sick and came down with it herself. They laid everyone out on pallets in the hallways they were so overwhelmed with cases and she was left there to live or die. When she didn't return home to her mother and my grandmother, her twin sister, they went to the hospital and found her sick on one of the pallets. They took her home and nursed her back to health. So there's another story for you! But yes, while I was researching, I read about two boys who were playing on the coffins stacked up, waiting for them to be buried. The boys came down with the flu and died. I would have thought the flu wouldn't have been contagious at that point, so it's possible they picked it up from home or elsewhere, but that's what was reported. Super question! Thanks for asking!

JenM, I love historicals, so even though my werewolves are contemporary stories, they live long lives and have a historical past. :) Had to sneak in the historical somehow!!! One of my most fun kind of stories is time travel. One is under consideration now.

Hi, Robin K! Absolutely, the books have humor. One of my critique partners said when she was critiquing one of my books that my humor would sneak up on her. I loved the comment. :) It's not over the top, comedy kind of humor, but definitely, I can't write anything that is totally dark that has no sense of humor. On the other hand, I can't write totally light pieces either. I tried that for Flipside, but though the stories were funny, they still had an underlying seriousness about them that wouldn't work for the line. :) I tried for another line and they said my stories weren't dark enough. *sigh* So I'm stuck the way I am--writing seriously with humor. LOL Thanks so much for getting the books and I hope you enjoy the series!!! :)

  12. I was wondering the other day, if the authors who write about a world where paranormal is known, are more enclined to think it absolutely impossible that fantastic stuff happens in real life whereas those where any fantastic is hidden from view, would always welcome the doubt about the unfantastic nature of our world... I know wordy and maybe not clear lol

Hi, Elaing8! I hope to put them on Kindle eventually! Winning the Highlander's Heart is in print in ebook form. And The Accidental Highland Hero, which I hope to share some of after Allure of the Wolf, is also! :) Thanks for asking!

Ah, thanks so much, Marian!! You made my night!! :) Long night at work!

Hmm, Sophie-I write both. In Deadly Liaisons, vampires are out. They are part of society as are hunters. But in the werewolf series, they're secretive about their existence. In The Vampire...In My Dreams, the vampires don't exist so people believe, but witches and demons are real. :) So we can make the worlds anything we want, really. :)

  23. wyld-dandelyon, great questions! I loved fantasy when I was growing up, the princess and the prince stories, my early love of romances, but I also read tons of mythology and different cultural folk legends, ghost stories were a favorite too. I think my first real exposure to Dracula was at college play. I was maybe 13, and I fell in love with the Count and wanted him to bite MY neck! I also love true life stories, and taking a real world and adding the paranormal or fantasy element to create an urban fantasy is just fun.

I love historical romance. Most of the historical romance I read is not paranormal though. I would, but I just don't find as much of it. I often read different genres from what I write. It's hard finding medieval romance, so I rarely am able to read it. And even when I do find it, it's not as early as I write my stories. But I still read tons of historical romances. I love time travels, but the time travels I write are nothing like the ones I've read so I don't have any problem reading them. I normally don't read other authors' werewolf stories. I've read a few vampire stories when judging contests, but again, mine aren't like other authors' works. I would not write regency because I'd be afraid I'd copy what others write since I read so much of it! :)

  24. Thanks so much, Barbara!

Have you ever read a story that made you think it was a shapeshifter story and it wasn't?

I was reading this really interesting historical that kept hinting that the hero was a panther shapeshifter, and I was really intrigued. I kept expecting her to find out, or him to let on that he had this double life, but nothing ever came of it. It was just plain weird. To me, if the story is about a shapeshifter, it should be clear. But if not, then it shouldn't hint that it is a shapeshifter story. :)

    What do you all think?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Terry,

I really love stories about wolves/shapeshifters. I especially love the stories where the couples mate for life. I find that kind of loyalty so romantic, and the bond between wolves are generally deep and meaningful. I also enjoy reading about pack dynamics and their power plays. I'll add your books to my "to be read" list!

  26. Hi, Amy, thanks!!! I sooo agree. I do a lot of studies of wolves, visited a wolf reserve in Texas and plan to see another in NM next year. Hope to go to one in MN. But I've also studied videotapes of them and read tons of literature. In one instance, an alpha male had TWO female mates!!! He must not have known that was a no-no. LOL So in one of my stories, I have where a female is the exception to the rule. Which is not acceptable. Neither would a male be who plays the field with werewolves.

That's what I like about creating these tales--taking the norm, finding an exception, and creating a werewolf version based on real wolves. :)

Hope you enjoy them! And as I mentioned earlier, I do have a newsletter that fans can sign up for and I give free reads of stories on my website.

    www.terryspear.com

Right now I'm giving an earlier version of Legend of the White Wolf that has mostly different scenes, different beginning, ending, just very dissimilar. A couple of scenes are similar though. But I do this so that readers will have something more to read from me until the next book comes out, and as a thanks from me for loving the books! :)

    Rachel
    Res498(AT)aol.com

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks, Rachel! I never outline a book. When I was a kid, I couldn't outline a paper, then write the paper. I'd end up outlining, then writing something totally different, then write a new outline, destroy the old one, and turn both in to a teacher. If I try to plan scenes, or the beginning to the end, I'd sit at a blank computer screen forever. :) I totally admire writers who can plot out their whole books though!

What I love most about being an author is fans. It's thrilling to hear how much the characters and stories mean to readers, just like they do to me when I'm enjoying other authors' works. It's the thrill of setting up a world where readers can find mystery, intrigue, romance, adventure, a place to get away for several hours from the real world and be entertained. :)
And feel good afterward! :) Thanks for the great questions! And hope you enjoy Wolf Fever!

I always send pictures of areas where the story is set. Now how cool is that? :)

  42. Terry, I always enjoy listening to author's creative processes. I wonder how much my closet writer ideas compare to the practices of such pros as yourself.

I'm delighted to hear that sometimes even as you start creating a story, you don't know yet where it might end up. I also love to hear about the fact that regardless of what you do, your characters might come to you with a scene, or dialogue and just play it out in front of you, whether you have time for it and invite it, or are extremely busy at the time.

I seem to run into similar situations. If I have a good feel for the character I'm creating, I can see him/her in my head. It almost feels like it switches from me writing a story, into him or her telling me about their adventures.

Thank you for letting us take a peak into the creative minds of the literary world. :)

    Niki.

Please, enter me into the draw.

  43. Hi Niki! I love it when the characters are fighting with each other in my head. LOL Especially when I can get it down on "paper". While I was writing The Wolf and the SEAL and was trying to come up with one of the final scenes, I saw one of the important secondaries and what he was about to do. I wasn't sure how that scene played out until I saw him start it, and then once I began writing it, it was all there. But I have to go back and do a lot of revising, to add more scene detail. It's just the very beginning! Thanks for commenting!

  52. Hi MommyWantsToREad! I love mer-people. I love to swim, and maybe that's the draw. Not sure, but I've always loved them. And in a fantasy YA I wrote where I included a lot of different mythological creatures, I had a lot of fun with merfolk. They're beautiful and enticing and dangerous. So much fun!

Thanks, BJ! Wolves don't get the respect they deserve! Though I have to admit I write about vamps also (Deadly Liaisons), who are as hot blooded (definitely not cold and dead)...

Once, I had an interview where I was asked how I compared vamps with wolves. Well, a wolf I see as more rugged, camper type, woodsy, loves to hike and run and sleep out of doors. A vampire is more cultured--dresses to the nines, likes the opera and fancy wining and dining. Not that mine do this, but they do have vamp balls. Sleeping in a tent would not appeal. :) And a wolf at the opera? The singing would be murder on his ears because of his wolf hearing, of course. In fact, he'd probably end up letting out a howl. :)

So if a lady is more into the cultured venues, she might prefer a vamp. But I'd definitely stick with the hot blooded variety. And for those who like their alphas more of the rugged type, a wolf would definitely do! :)
