10 September 2010

Last month I received a curious email from the marketing company Campfire regarding a special promotion for the upcoming NIGHTSHADE by Andrea Cremer.  Here is a snippet from the email:

We're about to start an online campaign for Andrea Cremer, author of the upcoming novel, Nightshade, and she mentioned you might be interested in being part of the experience. In a few weeks we'll kick things off by sending a small group of people a direct mail piece (something very cool) that ties into the world of Nightshade. If you're interested in being part of the experience, we would need a mailing address and the sooner we get it the better, since we're making these items personalized.

I had completely forgotten about that email until this morning when I found a rather unusual box that got delivered to my house. Inside was a long rectangular box (the kind that long stemmed roses usually come in) tied with a dark purple ribbon and a tag that said “An Invitation.”  I had no idea what this was or I would have snapped some pictures before tearing into it. Fortunately, Pop Culture Junkie had more restraint and she posted pictures from her similar package.

Inside buried in hundreds of curled stripes of some poor unfortunate book was a single Calla lily tied with more ribbon on which a large golden key was threaded.  The key was actually a thumb drive and this is what was on it…

How cool is that?  I don’t know how many of these mystery packages went out, but to create personalized videos for each one?  I’m flattered and more than that, I’m intrigued and crazy curious about NIGHTSHADE by Andrea Cremer.  You can visit Shay's facebook page at facebook.com/shadowshay for more episodes & check out the official book site http://nightshadebook.com/ for details on how to find yourself a character in the Nightshade universe!

The book itself isn’t available until October 19th, but I’m going to pass along my ARC to one of you as soon as I read it (which is going to be right after I finish this post).

  1. That is an incredibly unique and creative way to market a book! It's that kind of ingenuity that certainly piques my curiosity about her writing and her book. The personalization really says something about being committed to quality too. I mean, I bet they could have sent out even more mystery packages that were generic, but the impact wouldn't have been the same.

    This makes you take notice.

    Very, very cool. And I'm VERY interested in this book!

  49. Aloha!=)

    I think this marketing campaign is smart. There is not much going on right now and many of us book fanatics will devour the chance to play and follow along.

    On the flip side I think it's somewhat hard because now the character has a face and for someone like me I love to create my own image.

    All in all... I am definitely loving it.
