Cover Art Coverage: 20 New Titles!

See all the covers now after the jump! (Yay Julia for rebuilding the post)

This week several familiar series get new additions and Jeri Smith-Ready’s Shade trilogy gets a complete series make-over.  Things get a little meta as we comment on a cover that features a blurb from All Things Urban Fantasy (the kind of surprise that just makes our day), and my feelings about Photo-shopped tattoos finally spin out of control.  Not that I’m against them wholesale, but I think I like them better when the cover artist doesn’t even try to pretend they’re real.  Other than some wicked Gena Showalter butterflys and the gorgeous ink on AFTERLIGHT, I’m having a hard time coming up with a good example.  Can anyone suggest a series that “does tatts right”?

Description:
No other love has burned so bright.
Life can change in an instant, and no one understands that better than Aura. It’s been almost a year since her boyfriend tragically died. She’s finally letting go of Logan’s violet-hued ghost, but not her search to uncover the truth about her past.As the first in a generation that can see ghosts, Aura is convinced that she has a connection to the Shift. She’s trusted Zachary, ever patient and ever by her side, with all that she knows. But when the government threatens his life in an attempt to learn Aura’s secrets, she will stop at nothing to protect herself and the one she loves...even if that means betraying her own heart.

“TA-DA! You thought you were getting just the SHINE cover today, didn't you? I'm excited to present the brand-new look for the entire SHADE trilogy! “

Click on the Fictitious Delicious link to read Smith-Ready’s reaction to the cover redesign, I like her breakdown of how Aura grows throughout the series and the “mood” Smith-Ready would like for each cover. I was never a fan of the original covers, so I’m thrilled that this amazing series is finally getting a design overhaul. Love the bright yellow colors & just the overall smoky effect.

Sorry for the format change, below is my “quick and dirty” recreation of our post.  I was able to resurrect my own opinion on each cover, and what I could remember of Abigail’s remarks, but I hope she will chime in the comments.  Thanks for your patience today, here are “the other 19”.

I love the smile on this guy’s face (who could resist that dimple?!).  While the wings seem kind of “on the nose”, this and BORNE OF ASHES seem softer than previous ones in the series.  I like the direction they’re headed.

As you can tell from the cover blurb and my GODS & MONSTERS review, I’m a big fan of this series.  Luckily, this cover is good enough to get a thumbs up on it’s own merits.  I like the cover model continuity (though don’t know why she always wears that jacket), and the waves in the background are very ominous.

I remember this cover very well, as it prompted my tattoo question from the opening (that blurry little cross is distracting, I’d like this cover better if they hadn’t tried to make his tatt look “real”), and because it reminded both Abigail and I of Riddick.  Mmmmmm, Riddick…

Both Abigail and I got a “wig” vibe off the girl in the foreground, and I thought the guy’s hair looked like his mom cut it.  Not sure what look they were going for. I remember that Abigail also mentioned that this cover was a step up for the series over all.

We both loved the colors in this one, but thought the shadow effect looked odd.  On STARCROSSED, the darkness on her face looked like a photo-negative effect, on this one, Abigail would have liked it better if they just had her looking the other way.

This model’s hair gave me flashbacks of Greased Lightning, but Abigail got Elvis’s groovy vibe.  We both loved the inky wings.

This cover did a great job melding “above ground” elements with the underwater scene.  I particularly like the detail of the waves at the surface.

I loved the movement in this cover, hair and birds swirling up into tree branches.  Not sure how I feel about those earrings, however.  Maybe they’re in the story.

I have a deep and abiding girl crush on this cover model, or more specifically, on her muscles.  If anyone could kick ass in a bustier (and reclaim the title “Deliverance” from it’s aura of banjos and backwoods), it would be her.

HUNTER OF SHADOWS and this cover are a big improvement for the series.  They’ve kept a certain amount of man candy on the plate, while moving away from the more florid “just ripped his clothes off” look.

This cover has a very “YA” feel, but realizing that the crowd is made up of the same two people, over and over, would be enough to prompt me to pick this book up and read the description.

This cover model gives me a total Carrie Bradshaw vibe (and if I were Big, I’d get the hell out of her way).  I love the clockwork in the background, at first glance it looks organic.  I’m not a big fan of the title font, however, it looks very stark against the blackness of her skirt.

Knowing what I do of Shadowlands mythology, it’s easy to imagine a reason that a “goblin prince” would have those angel wings.  However, for the cover, the mixing of those two images doesn’t work for me.  Luckily, I am excited to read book two regardless of the cover, can’t wait!

It’s totally worth clicking here to see the enlarged version of this cover, Chris McGrath has done such a fantastic job with the expression on the cover model’s face.  So much resolve and emotion, love it!

I love the lighting in this cover, water droplets and sun spots all mixed together.  That little window of clarity around her hair is lovely, and I didn’t notice the surprise at her feet until my second or third time.

  9. *sigh* I'm wondering where the other 19 covers are as well. Windows Live Writer is only pulling up this one (Larissa is right, it looks like everything after the post break is gone). Abigail saw them, I'm not crazy! But it looks like I'll be rebuilding the post, I can't figure out how to find an older copy to recover...

  10. Can't wait to see the rest of the post...Good luck rebulding!

As far as awesome tattoos, I think there are some great ones on Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson covers. :)

  12. They're back! Kind of! I threw in what I could remember from our impressions, but I'm sure much was lost in translation. Thanks for your patience, sorry it took so long.

  13. Wow you did much more than just throw the covers up there like I did when I lost one of these posts once. I'm actually really digging the abridged format you have here...any one else agree with me? Lots of good covers, especially YA covers (I had picked AURACLE as my best of the week, but sadly the bad wig earned WISHFUL THINKING my worst vote).

  14. Love Fallen In Love, Rapture, and Something Strange and Deadly. Those are really really pretty covers. Lauren Kate's stories aren't too amazing but her book covers are mind-blowing. Don't know about Strange and Deadly though.. will look forward to it.

  15. Abigail - Don't you recognize your own work? I cribbed the Hot off the Press format for this one :-) I remember thinking the wig on WISHFUL THINKING was bad when it was on Julia Roberts, it doesn't get better on a book cover...

Stingy - Based on those covers, you share my love for stark, Gothic covers. The Fallen series does such a great job, I'm a fan.

  16. Okay, I can see them now. And Wow! I loved the simple, organized way you lined them up really good! LOVE!

  18. I hate when they change the covers of a series part way through!!! UGH now Shine will not match the first two books, drives me nuts that they are doing this so often with teen books.

  19. Some of these are definitely eye catching.
