Description
As an angel of death, Keenan’s job is to collect the souls on his list. He’s carried out his duty for two thousand years and never faltered once. Until he meets Nicole St. James. When the moment of death comes, Keenan hesitates, and instead of taking Nicole, Keenan touches the vampire who’s attacking her.
Cast out of heaven for disobedience, Keenan plummets to earth. Six months later, he finally manages to track Nicole to a bar in Mexico. He’s stunned to discover that the woman he remembers has undergone a dramatic change—she’s become a vampire. And when he realizes that she’s the target of all manner of enemies—other vampires, demons, even shifters—he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, even if all hell breaks loose…
Review
ANGEL OF DARKNESS brought to mind all of my favorite parts of the movie Constantine: gritty noir, blurred lines between good and evil, and a melding of religious mythology with magic that is just right. Eden’s world beats the movie hands down, however, as Nicole is a compelling heroine to compliment the dark and damaged hero.
I was emotionally invested in Nicole from her very first, violent introduction. Her attack is brutal, and her plight melted my heart along with Keegan’s. I would have liked to see even more of Nicole’s struggle to acclimate from church going kindergarten teacher to vampire siren, but that part of her story arc was glossed over in the past tense (a loss for the story overall, I feel). Still, Nicole’s present was complex enough to keep my attention. She and Keegan are the blind leading the blind as far as worldly magics are concerned, and I enjoyed watching them figure things out. I also loved Keenan’s adjustment to the human world. I found his struggle to understand his place in the universe, questioning what actions define right and wrong, to be an interesting and refreshing addition to the genre. Also, rather than a small glimpse of the next couple in the series, Eden sets the hook deep with the almost cinematic confrontations between Sam and Seline. I can’t wait to read their story.
Eden’s angels are as flawed and compelling as the humans they tend, and in ANGEL OF DARKNESS we get just the first glimpse of how every one’s world is changing. Eden’s mythology has nuances and secrets that I’m eager to explore further alongside her characters. Visceral and violent, The Fallen series has introduced a new breed of angel that has their feet planted firmly in a dark world so hauntingly similar to our own.

I'm loving all the good reviews for this book because Eden's last book was kind of disappointing.

Nice review :).
ReplyDelete@Paranormal Haven - My only other experience with Eden was her short story in ENTANGLED, which was good but not one of my standout favorites from the anthology (I'm not much of a short story enthusiast anyway, so that didn't hold me back). As this was my first full length Eden, I can't compare to her last offering, but ANGEL OF DARKNESS was a fun PR with some refreshing details. If you pick it up, be sure to let me know if it compares favorably to the other one you read.
ReplyDelete@Victoria - Thanks!
