Alpha Assets

New-SCS-Cover-500Thanks so much for having me at All Things Urban Fantasy today! I love this blog, so it’s  a treat to be here as an author. I’m celebrating the release of Stone Cold Seduction, the first book in my Set in Stone trilogy, available now from Entangled Publishing. I’d love to talk about alpha assets. Those physical traits every supernatural alpha has that make us swoon. For the purpose of this conversation, let’s assume size matters. Some readers love a man with fangs. Of course, big teeth doesn’t mean better here, it’s all about how they use them. Maybe your tastes run more towards hairy men. No, not an Austin Powers-like chest pelt, but rather shifters. And I love shifters, but again, size doesn’t necessarily matter there either. Those guys rely on speed and agility. Ahem.

Size matters when it comes to wings. My favorite supernatural alpha asset. So it was only natural for the two heroes in Stone Cold Seduction to have them. Jax is a gargoyle. His wings are sexy with a capital “S.” With a span of just over seven feet, it’s hard not to be impressed. Dark gray and used to fly or fight, they complement his chiseled frame perfectly. MacLean is a phoenix, with an equally impressive spread…er…span. His wings are brilliantly colored—the hue of a living flame, with bright reds, blues and greens thrown in. He can make your temperature rise without lighting a single fire.

I’ve always been a sucker for a guy with wings, but I haven’t read too many books with alphas who have them. A cape is well and good, but not nearly as much fun for flying. And alphas who can appear and disappear at will? Sure, that’s fine too, but it just doesn’t have the same thrill factor for me. When I created these characters, I had to use elements that were interesting and important to me. It was a lot like piecing together a costume. Their words, actions, physical traits, abilities, and clothing all had to fit who they are in the story. It’s an art form. As we read about new characters, we need to get a great image of how they look, how they act, and who they are in our heads. It’s up to the author to build the character up, piece by piece, until we have the image locked in our minds.

I started with mythological creatures with wings, and built the heroes around that. *grins* Every alpha has to start somewhere, right? I gave Jax and MacLean personalities that I thought fit their alter egos, and voila. I had my guys. They were a blast to work with, and I hope you’ll all enjoy reading about them!

I’d love to know: if you could put together your perfect alpha, what asset would you start with?

Thanks so much for having me here today! I love chatting with readers. I hope you’ll all come find me.

Description:

When a regular night of Robin Hood-ery results in the manifestation of some, um, unusual paranormal abilities, perfume-maker Elleodora Fredricks realizes the normal world she lives in isn't quite... normal. And neither is she, thanks to her father, king of the shadow elves. Not only is he evil incarnate and the reason Elle moonlights as a burglar-someone has to take care of all his victims-he's stolen her memories.

And only reading her fate can fix that.

Good thing she's got a trio of hotties willing to help her find said fate, but only if she gives them something in return. Saving her oracle BFF's fiancé, falling in love with the gargoyle, and making up for breaking the phoenix's heart ought to be a piece of cake for the princess of the shadow elves.

If only the king didn't want his daughter dead...

  3. I've read another series, author and titles escape me, with a gargoyle hero, but he's was really very secondary to the heroine. Time for gargoyles to get their day in the sun!...oops, there's a problem with that, isn't there?

  4. This book sounds like a lot of fun! Building my perfect alpha would have to start with the eyes. They need to be haunting and have a mischievous twinkle.

  12. This sounds so cool! I like the idea of gargoyles. Marjorie M. Liu has a couple of gargoyles who are heroes in her Dirk & Steel novels as well, but this series is new to me.

My perfect alpha would have to not be a jerk. Cuz I get really tired of the "alphaholes"! I like a strong hero who isn't afraid of a strong woman.

My perfect Alpha would start off being tall. I love a man I have to look up to. After that, long dark hair, big black wings...killer smile, hard body...LOL

  20. I love a guy with wings too but only know archangels as winged heros so far. It'll be interesting to read about Jax and MacLean as different creatures with alpha hero qualities. If I could put together my own alpha the asset I'd probably start with would be eyes and hair color; for some reason I automatically associate different personalities with different coloring and hair styles lol.

  21. An ideal alpha for me is strong, loyal, protective and loving. He's not perfect but he's a go-getter and determined. No matter what he won't give up without a fight.

  27. When I think alpha, I think shifters; shifters with packs. That kind of alpha would need to be physically strong - the strongest in the pack - intelligent, and altruistic. The last characteristic is because the alpha always needs to think of what's best for the pack, not what's best for the alpha. A tough job!
