Cover Art Coverage: 18 New Titles!

There are 17 new covers to woo their way on to your TBR pile, and one re-issue that may prompt a few readers to take another look at Kelly Keaton’s Gods & Monsters series.  It was a close race to pick my favorite this week (and Rob Thurman’s hilarious comment may have tipped the balance).  In the end, both of my choices featured a foreboding expression and blank eyes, but obviously only one of them pulls it off.

Abigail’s ThoughtsThumbs up

While I’m not quite as passionate as the author on this one, I am a big fan.  The expression on the cover model’s face is riveting enough on it’s own, but the whole cover put together is entrancing. I’m a big Chris McGrath fan so I understand Rob’s excitement over the great covers he keeps producing for her series (& so glad she’s recovered enough to make them), and Julia is dead on about the captivating expression on his face.

Description:

The second book in a new urban fantasy series featuring mosquito-sized fairies with poisonous bites that drive humans insane. It's only been three weeks since Annabelle helped solve the murder of Grace Beauchamp, and in the process, she discovered a secret world of invisible, magic-working people who have decided she might have what it takes to join their ranks.

As best as she can determine, Annabelle’s attack by a group of fairies has infected her with paranormal ability she did not previously possess, including being able to mentally move objects and heal wounds. Her new abilities appear to have few negative side effects, aside from creepy dreams. But would that change if she stopped injecting herself with the mystery drug delivered to her by the even more mysterious Tucker, one of the Invisibles? More…

I like the tiny patch of green to balance out all the fire, and our cover model has real clothes! I believe this is Tony Mauro’s work and I’m loving it almost as much as the previous cover.  So many cool little details.  Bring on more (sub)urban fantasy!

Lucky for a book with a cover this YA generic, the premise has me completely engaged.  I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled for this one, can’t wait! Yep.  Nothing really to remember about this cover, but that little teaser of a description has this one going straight to the wish list.

The expression on this guy’s face is not at all sexy, and the skin tone for both of these cover models does not work with the purple dress. I’m not a fan of the purple wash either, and his eyes look completely white.

The red gear seems sharp and out of place on such a sinister background, but this ring master is awesome enough to carry it off. Not for me.  Sounds good, but the ring master looks like he’s two seconds away from a Jack the Ripper montage.

Description:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens. More…

These cover models look like the tail-end of a Kei$ha song.  The descriptions sounds great, but the “hung over” expression doesn’t do it for me. Honestly it just looks very self-pub.  But I agree the description sounds great.

I’m ambivalent towards this one, I’m not sure how I feel about the teal overlaying the commando.  I do like it more than the cape on the previous cover, this one looks much more contemporary. I completely preferred the cape to this 80’s sleeveless tee.

Which are your Best and Worst?

  1. I really enjoyed Divergent, and am excited about Insurgent. But I can't help thinking about Divergent's cover as the eye of Sauron cover, so I suppose Insurgent is the white tree of Gondor cover. Ya think I may have read too much Tolkien in my formative years? (Answer: No. It's not possible.)

p.s. The model on the Shield of Fire cover is way too close to the classic "Do my pits smell bad?" pose for me to take seriously.

  2. I love when you two hash covers. The worst cover is bad :p Love Blood on the Bayou...I really want to start that series.

  3. What lovely covers! I always enjoy some good eye-candy and I have to agree with @Rain Maiden, the worst cover is FUGLY!

  4. Thanks so much for posting the cover for Wicked as They Come! I promise there's nothing Jack-the-Ripper-y, although there is a good deal of sexy ringmaster vampire. The cover artist is Tony Mauro, and I love the elements of steampunk and bits of red he snuck in.

  5. @Delilah - Thanks for stopping by! Tony Mauro is amazing, I should have known he was behind that killer ring master. Can't wait to take a look.
