Description

Gabriel and Shay are convinced that they can make their relationship work. Knowing that Shay is half-vampire, Gabriel thinks that his coven will embrace her as one of their own, but instead they view her as an abomination, a thing that doesn’t belong in either world. And they want her dead. Now Gabriel must make the ultimate decision - watch his love be killed by his coven or defy the people closest to him, the people he has spent centuries with to save her.

Review

Really good vampire YAs aren’t as easy to find as one might expect.  It can be hard to find a new approach or a fresh take on the mythology to really capture the audience’s attention these days.  Last year, Roswell author Melinda Metz, and TV show co-writer Laura J. Burns did just that with their innovative and deeply romantic CRAVE.  This year, they follow up and finish the story they started with SACRIFICE. For those of us who screamed at the cliffhanger ending in CRAVE, fear not.  SACRIFICE picks up just seconds after that.

One of the aspects that attracted me so much to CRAVE was the very believable and well paced romance that developed between Shay and Gabriel.  They both had to overcome so much before they could even begin to look at each other as anything but the enemy.  In SACRIFICE, Shay and Gabriel are ripped apart by Gabriel’s family from the first scene, so we don’t exactly get to revel in their hard won love.  But we do get to experience Gabriel’s anguish and helplessness where Shay is concerned, and we follow Shay through her fear and later determination to be reunited with Gabriel.

We learn quite a bit more about Gabriel’s vampire family in SACRIFICE including Shay’s vampire father Sam.  Everything is well written, and never dwells too long on any one supporting character before returning to either Shay or Gabriel.  I appreciated this added insight into the vampires, but I missed the interaction between Shay and Gabriel.  I also missed the YA high school feeling from the first book.  If I didn’t know that Shay was a teenager, I would have thought she was an adult.

Overall, SACRIFICE and CRAVE before it offer a very unique vampire YA featuring a strong romance, harrowing threats, and portrayals of love in all it’s forms.  Based on the ending of SACRIFICE, I believe this is the end of the Crave series, and it’s a satisfying one.  Both Crave books should really be read together since they tell one main story: the dying girl who fell in love with an immortal vampire and the beautiful, occasionally heartbreaking romance that followed.
