Cover Art Coverage: 9 New Titles!

It’s a good week for cover art, but a bad week for covering it (Abigail is off sick with the flu). Luckily, even the “worst” cover this week is still pretty great, but since my partner is missing it’s up to reader comments to offer the balancing vote.  What do you think, did I pick the right thumbs?

While the black and white does highlight the sinuous tentacle curved under Kara’s cheek, I feel like color would have added something to this cover. Still, I love the direction they’re taking with this series.

Description:

Just as Jane Jameson’s unlife seems to be stabilizing, fate sinks its fangs firmly into her butt. Despite her near-phobia of all things marital, her no-frills nighttime nuptials to her sexy boyfriend Gabriel are coming along smoothly. But the road to wedded bliss gets bumpy when a teenage acquaintance is fatally wounded in front of Jane’s shop and she turns him to save his life. The Council pronounces Jane responsible for the newborn vamp until he can control his thirst.

Jane’s kitchen at River Oaks barely holds enough Faux Type O to satiate the cute teen’s appetite and maintain Gabriel’s jealous streak at a slow simmer. As if keeping her hyperactive childe from sucking the blood out of the entire neighborhood isn’t enough to deal with, the persnickety ghost of Jane’s newly deceased Grandma Ruthie has declared a war on the fanged residents of River Oaks. More…

Even without the author’s comment, I would have noticed that ring (though I called it “ginormous”, not “bat-shaped”). I love how they fit that detail in, even with a naked cover.

Jill’s expression is so gleeful it seems like a departure for these covers. Since this is the last book in the series, however, it gives me hope for a kickass finale. Can’t wait!

This cover puts a little bit of the creepiness back in being a teen-vampire, I like how the red mulch underneath her bleeds into the leaf pattern on the sides.

*Love* how this image marries the concept of time with blood… a fabulous allegory for vampirism. Of course, I don’t think that quite fits Kali’s condition, but I’m interested to read and find out.

I like the composition of this cover, though I’m guessing it would be too cartoony for Abigail. Pairing it with a punny title was too much for me, cover alone wouldn’t get me to pick this one up.

*UPDATED with helpful info from the author*

The original Flux cover that you show is *still* the current US cover (although it's been tweaked slightly - most up-to-date art is here on my website: http://www.kazmahoney.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/TWQ-Latest-Cover.jpg )

The 'new' cover you posted (from Tez's blog) is actually just a mock-up of a potential UK cover art. Not final yet at all, and shouldn't really have gone up on Amazon UK.

While this new cover fits the first in the series more, I wish they could have kept her forearms melding with the lattice of branches in the border, I loved that detail. Also, her right hand shows through her hair oddly… I’m not sure what effect they were going for but it distracted me pretty badly, this new cover still needs some work.

  1. AHHHH ♥ new post! I was desperately refreshing this blog - ATUF makes me happy. :3

Sins of Demon - Can I say like, FINALLY AHHH I looooove this series, *hands down, hands up*so I am so excited it's going to release soon (can January get here NOWWWW?) and about the same time as Kresley's Lothaire. WOOHOO.

My favourite cover would be a close race between Katie MacAlister's Sparks Fly and Molly Harper's Nice Girls don't bite their Neighbours. The model in Sparks Fly is bringing the sexy back even more than the guy in NGDBTN, but the bat ring is driving me crazy. I SO WANT ONE RIGHT NOW.

    My first time commenting. :)

  2. So many amazing covers. I absolutely love the Nice Girls... cover. Sorry, I am not fond of The Wood queen.

  3. Btw, Sins of the Demon by Diana Rowland is in color. It was just released in B&W before they finished touch ups on the color =DDDD

  4. I just saw Sins of the Demon in colour too! Pretty! So this is my best pick. The worst is Let them Eat Stakes - I hate covers like this, they are just so boring.

  5. While I am really looking forward to reading Sins of the Demon, not so much loving the cover. It's kinda cheesy but you know what they say about judging :)

Until you pointed it out, didn't realize that this is the first Jill Kismit cover to have her smiling... kinda seems like a bad omen huh?

I love these posts and really look forward to the cover reveals. I often get my new releases from these posts :)

  6. I really love the Sins of the Demon cover with the black and white detail. I wonder if Daniel Dos Santos did this one.

  9. @Stingy - For a first time, you killed it, hope you come back to comment again! From your favorites, it looks like you've got an eye for a well-turned torso. I'm all over SPARKS FLY on this one, I love, love, love that dragon. But @Shain shares your love of NICE GIRLS, so I think I'm outvote.

@ Rebs - Me, too! @Erin, I don't think the smile is a bad sign, I think it means Jill finishes the series a happy camper. And there are things other than mayhem that make her happy, right? Um... right?

@Mariya - Oooh, good find. Thanks for linking it, @Larissa!

@Kara - I'm torn! LET THEM EAT STAKES-esque covers have a lot of little details in them, which if you love the series or if you have time to stare can be entertaining... but yeah, as far as "on the shelf impact" is concerned, all I get is a vague sense of cuteness... and not in a good I Can Has Cheezeburger kind of way.

@Stephanie - Good eye! According to Tor's twitter feed, it is his magic touch once again.

@Lonewolf - I'm way behind on Diana Rowland. The first book in the series didn't wow me, but Abigail said the series really took off for her in book two. I'm going to have to pick up the pace if I want to be ready for SINS OF THE DEMON when it comes out.

  10. Hi Julia,

Not commenting re. opinions about THE WOOD QUEEN, but just wanted to clarify:

  11. I love the new Dan Dos Santos cover for SINS OF THE DEMON. He could paint a phone book and I'd pre-order it :) But I've never been a fan of the Jill Kissmet covers so ANGEL TOWN would get my worst vote.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @Karen - Thanks for the update and the link, I'm interested to see how the UK cover turns out in it's final version. I'm glad the previous cover is sticking around for the US, too, I like how the encircling branches melted into the detailing on her forearms.
