PSF Guest Blog & Giveaway: Rachel Vincent “My Soul to Keep”

I’m thrilled to welcome Rachel Vincent (the Shifters series, Soul Screamers series) today as my first guest for Paranormal Summer Fest.  Rachel’s third Soul Screamers book, MY SOUL TO KEEP releases today. A recent transplant into the deep south, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks — seriously — and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.

In MY SOUL TO KEEP, we see the return of Avari, the hellion we met in MY SOUL TO SAVE, who is now determined to get his hands on Kaylee Cavanaugh. His return brings up a question that is not answered outright in any of the Soul Screamers novels so far.

Why is Avari so obsessed with Kaylee?

This is a question that bothers Kaylee constantly, and that, oddly enough, I'm not sure Avari even really knows the answer to.

But to understand the question (not to mention the answer) you have to first understand what Avari is. Simply put, he's a hellion. For lack of a better descriptor, a hellion is a demon of sorts. A powerful, nefarious creature who feeds from pain and chaos. Hellions cannot leave the Netherworld (a hellish alternate dimension that is a skewed reflection of our own world), and they cannot tell an outright lie. Hellions can appear in any form they choose, except that they cannot exactly replicate the appearance of any other creature, living or dead.

Avari, specifically, is a hellion of greed, which means that in addition to feeding from pain and chaos, as all hellions do, he can also both feed from and inspire greed, or avarice, which is the root of his name.

And that, it turns out, is the key to understanding his obsession with Kaylee.

Though she'd never describe herself this way, Kaylee Cavanaugh, the viewpoint character in my Soul Screamers series, is very selfless and generous with her time and energy. She wants only to help people. Avari is quite literally her foil. Her opposite. He is both fascinated and disturbed by Kaylee, who embodies everything he cannot understand.

Kaylee is far from perfect, but her intentions are pure, and Avari suffers conflicting desires to possess her completely (to study and feed from her); to tempt her into yielding to selfishness, thus tarnishing the purity of her own soul; and to eradicate her, like she never existed at all.

He doesn't truly understand these conflicting impulses, and he hates it that he can't quite wrap his mind around her. Not to mention the fact that she has thus far eluded capture.

To Avari, Kaylee is a mystery he can't solve. She's a craving he can't ignore and the pebble in his shoe, already causing him pain and discomfort. But most of all, she's the prize he can't quite reach, and thus wants all the more. And at the end of the day, theirs is quite literally a battle between good and evil, the lines of which are bound to blur before the conflict is eventually resolved.

Because as a hellion, Avari cannot die. And Kaylee will never stop fighting...
