Throwdown Thursday: Better as a Movie or Book?

Throwdown Thursday

Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing [hosted by The Neverending Shelf] where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. And it is up to YOU to determine the winner!

Last weeks Throwdown asked Who is more Formidable? Kate or Mel? The winner by unanimous decision was: Kate

Do you ever venture outside the printed word for your urban fantasy fix?  I certainly do.  I actually owe my current love for all things urban fantasy to a little television show called Buffy.  Since then, I’ve devoured all types of urban fantasy mediums.  But if I had to pick a favorite, I think books do it best.  I usually get little leerly  when I hear about a favorite UF getting the movie treatment.

I picked three adaptations below, each with varying degrees of success in terms of box office revenue.  But what about success defined by the fans?  I’m sort of surprised by my own opinion.  Typically, I’m disappointed by movie adaptations when compared to the book source materiel (urban fantasy genre or not).  But from the list below, with the exception of Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire (which I haven’t read), I liked all of the movie versions.  I even liked Annette Curtis Klause’s Blood and Chocolate better as a movie (granted the screenplay is very different from the book, but still).  And as much as I loved Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, there was something equally wonderful about seeing Bella and Edward—minus the cheesy glitter sweat-- brought to life (and only partially because of the ridiculously handsome Robert Pattinson).  So what do you think?  In general, do you like the movie version or the book versions better?  And can you think of some other UF book to movie examples?

Leave a comment below with your answer and check back next Thursday for the winner and a new Throwdown.

  1. Another urban fantasy book to tv series is the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Personally I prefer the books.

  2. I had the opporunity to attend an advanced screening of The Vampire's Assistant and I thought it was really good. I've never read the books though, so I can't compare the two.

  3. Of the three you feature the answer is book, book and book.

  4. Book! I almost always have to go with the book; the only exception I can think of where it was a toss up for me was Lord of the Rings. The movies brought the books alive for me, though with less detail.

I own Buffy and Angel on DVD. *snicker*
