Review

FROSTFIRE is not my first Viehl novel (and it certainly won’t be my last).  She writes just about every genre around under various pen names.  Oddly, this is my first paranormal from her.

If you skim through the reviews for FROSTFIRE, one word keeps reappearing: Confusing.  And yes, there is a lot going on in this book that never quite clicked including several shady organizations, a huge cast of characters who cross over from both the Kyndred and Darkyn series—most of whom have different abilities (vampires, werewolves, and all sorts of physics), and then there are three different couples: Nicola and Gabriel, a Sheriff and his one night stand, and the main protagonists Lilah and Walker.

I think I would have preferred reading about each couple separately.  Jumping from couple to couple every other chapter really cut the romantic tension.  The relationship that suffered the most was unfortunately the main couple.  They had a fantastic setup when they first met:  handcuffed together naked in the back of a refrigerated truck (they literally melt the ice!).  But after that, it was mere hours later before Lilah was basically composing love sonnets for Walker.  I’m totally fine with extreme situations triggering extremely quick emotions, but this had to be some kind of record.

Confusingly complex plotlines and lighting fast romance aside, Viehl has written another fast paced, action packed story with plenty of scorching hot scenes and bad guys you really want to sink your teeth into.  Don’t worry about jumping into this series midway, as each book features mostly new characters. NIGHSHINE is the next Kyndred book and will be released later in 2011.

  1. That's too bad about there being so many couples involved but the book definitely sounds interesting. I just got the first book in this series though so I'll be giving it a try soon.

  2. April - It was a bit much, but there were some great scenes and I do get why this series has the loyal following that it does.

  4. I can see how some would view parts of the setup in Frostfire as confusing because Viehl always packs her novel full to the hilt(which is one of the aspects I love about her writing). This one of the reasons why I always tell everyone that wants to start reading Viehl's PNR series to start with the first book in the Darkyn series. I have read all the books in both the Darkyn and Kyndred series, and they all build up upon each other, their worlds are very intertwined. Both series are treasure troves of reading experiences so I don't think many would regret reading them. This way you to get the full effect of the world building/overall story arc. I'm glad your still interested in the series. I'm anxious to read Nightshine myself. :)

  5. Cheryl - The cover is excellent. Easily my favorite of the series so far.

Donna - I'm sure it would have made more sense if I'd read the entire series. Viehl is a talented author so I might just go back and try them.
