Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing [hosted by The Neverending Shelf] where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. And it is up to YOU to determine the winner!
Last weeks Throwdown asked: Old Succubus Blues vs New Succubus Blues. The verdict by split decision was the new Succubus Blues.
Last week, Kelly Armstrong announced via Twitter that her US publisher had changed the cover for her upcoming Waking the Witch (Women of the Otherworld, Book 11) due out August 3rd:
Original Waking the Witch cover | Revised Waking the Witch cover |
There was no reason given for the new cover. The motorcycle, and clothing are the same (except Savannah is now wearing a brown belt). The big difference is that we can now see all of Savannah. I think that the new version is a huge improvement all the way around. What about you?
Do you prefer the original cover or the revised cover?
Waking the Witch (Women of the Otherworld, Book 11)
The new novel in Kelley Armstrong's bestselling Women of the Otherworld series showcases the fascinating Savannah Levine, a powerful young witch with a rebellious past and a troublesome heritage.
The orphaned daughter of a sorcerer and a half-demon, Savannah is a terrifyingly powerful young witch who has never been able to resist the chance to throw her magical weight around. But at twenty-one she knows she needs to grow up and prove to her guardians, Paige and Lucas, that she can be a responsible member of their supernatural detective agency. So she jumps at the chance to fly solo, investigating the mysterious deaths of three young women in a nearby factory town, as a favour to one of the agency's associates. At first glance, the murders look garden-variety human, but on closer inspection signs point to otherworldly stakes.
Soon Savannah is in over her head. She's run off the road and nearly killed, haunted by a mystery stalker and freaked out when the brother of one of the dead women is murdered when he tries to investigate the crime. To complicate things, something weird is happening to her powers. Pitted against shamans, demons, a voodoo-inflected cult and garden-variety goons, Savannah has to fight to ensure her first case isn't her last. And she also has to ask for help, perhaps the hardest lesson she's ever had to learn.

revised- I like the colors in the new cover.
ReplyDeleteI like the revised.
ReplyDeleteI like the revised cover better.
ReplyDeleteI like the revised one, even that is not exactly how I pictured Savannah.
ReplyDeleteI am curious about what happened to the pentagram though.
Gonna say I don't like either. It doesn't capture the essense of the other covers.
ReplyDeleteI like the 2nd one the best, I like having a face to a character
ReplyDeleteThe new cover is a great improvement over the old. The color is better and you can see all of Savannah instead of a headless Savannah.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind either covers, I really just like the motorcycle!
ReplyDeleteI like both however the fact that you can now see Savannah's face helps the characterization so the new cover wins and the motorcycle still rocks!!!

I actually like the UK cover best.
ReplyDeleteI definitely like the second cover more
ReplyDeletethe first one with her head cut off serves only to objectify her body, while the second actually has her face and she is in less of a submissive position (though not by much...)
I like the new cover better. Its sexier.
ReplyDeleteI like the new one. I am not a big fan of covers with heads or bodies cut off.
ReplyDeleteKelley Armstrong is one of the first authors I met and she is amazing!!=)
ReplyDeleteI am going to vote for the old cover because my general rule of thumb is: Never show a face.
It's my general rule and not the absolute because I do like some overs with face shots. However, if they were not great in casting then I feel it hinders the book. If the cover model looks nothing close to what is described.... basic- hair color, eye color, skin color, hair style.....then what is the point.
I like the first cover, it fits the other covers in the series more. I do, however, like the colors for the second cover, not as harsh.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you can see Savannah more in the new cover but I think the colors of the font and such in the first cover is what turned me off of it.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks a lot better.
I love the new cover a lot better! and I did not realize the book comes out the day before my birthday. I guess I will be up reading this and not going out! lol
ReplyDeletewho is the model from the covers?
ReplyDeleteWe don't know who the model is.
ReplyDeleteThis story follows along with several of the Otherworld characters, but mainly it is Savannah staking out a place in life by solving a case on her own with her PI skills ...more Having loved many of the other Tales from the Otherworld, I just finished Waking the Witch Savannah's story.
ReplyDeleteThe writing flowed so smoothly for me in this book. It was a nice fluid tale that had a few turns I was not expecting, but were surprising and yet were well woven in the story that I found them very appealing.
