Today we are excited to welcome Gina Damico who is introducing her debut YA novel; CROAK (available on March 20th from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) about a teen who is sent to live in Croak, a town populated entirely by Grim Reapers. Julia reviewed CROAK yesterday calling it, “a hysterical parody of YA boarding school genre.” Check out the giveaway below to win a CROAK Prize Pack & let us know your favorite thing about reapers or your favorite reaper book in the comments below.
ATUF: What inspired you to write a YA about Grim Reapers?
GD: The characters of Lex and Uncle Mort just sort of popped into my head one day. I liked the idea of a grim-reaper-in-training, and since her parents probably wouldn't approve of that, it only seemed fair for her to be trained by her wacky uncle. And then of course, I couldn't let her tackle this task all by her lonesome - there had to be more teenagers, each wackier than the last. And before I knew it, the town of Croak had been populated, and a story was born. I really had very little to do with it.
ATUF: How is your Grim Reaper mythology unique?
GD: As far as I'm aware, no other Grim Reaper story consists of jellyfish, spiders, computer-type devices called Smacks, or spazzed-out hair, all of which play a significant role in Croak. Plus, Croak's Grims are hip to the times - they wear hoodies, they use the latest technology, and they use their scythes to slice through the space-time continuum, rather than that big hooded guy who uses it to...farm? …Harvest...souls? Contemporize, man!
ATUF: If CROAK were ever made into a movie, who would your dream or, to keep things interesting, nightmare cast be?
GD: For the kids, I'd want them all to be actors we've never seen before. No offense to the lovely/slutty casts of any given CW drama - I'd just like to see some fresh faces. As for the adults, I'd love Colin Farrell for Uncle Mort - badass, snarky, and that perfect hint of scary. Everyone else could be up for grabs - though Morgan Freemen would be perfect for Corpp. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.
ATUF: What are some of your favorite titles/authors in the paranormal genres?
GD: I'm a big fan of anything funny, like Kiersten White and the Paranormalcy books, and Rachel Hawkins and the Hex Hall series. If you can make me snort things out of my nose, we're besties for life. And I don't know if it counts as paranormal, but Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone knocked my socks AND shoes off.
ATUF: Finish this statement with as much/little detail as you like: You'll like CROAK if you like...
GD: Snark, pointy objects, awkward flirting, death, mystery, and the bitter emo dead version of Edgar Allan Poe
Thanks for having me, and happy reaping reading!

Description:
Sixteen-year-old Lex Bartleby has sucker-punched her last classmate. Fed up with her punkish, wild behavior, her parents ship her off to upstate New York to live with her Uncle Mort for the summer, hoping that a few months of dirty farm work will whip her back into shape. But Uncle Mort’s true occupation is much dirtier than that of shoveling manure.
He’s a Grim Reaper. And he’s going to teach her the family business.
Lex quickly assimilates into the peculiar world of Croak, a town populated entirely by reapers who deliver souls from this life to the next. Along with her infuriating yet intriguing partner Driggs and a rockstar crew of fellow Grim apprentices, Lex is soon zapping her Targets like a natural born Killer.
Yet her innate ability morphs into an unchecked desire for justice—or is it vengeance?—whenever she’s forced to Kill a murder victim, craving to stop the attackers before they can strike again. So when people start to die—that is, people who aren’t supposed to be dying, people who have committed grievous crimes against the innocent—Lex’s curiosity is piqued. Her obsession grows as the bodies pile up, and a troubling question begins to swirl through her mind: if she succeeds in tracking down the murderer, will she stop the carnage—or will she ditch Croak and join in?

I have to say I'm pretty partial to Terry Pratchett's reapers. I like a good laugh. That said, these books look great, too.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite series would be Soul Screamers from Rachel Vincent. TOD! Yea....nuff said ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any reaper books yet but I would like to. They sound very interesting and I love paranormal. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com

I SOOOO want to read this book!!! There used to be a TV show called Dead Like Me about a girl who dies and becomes a Reaper. I just love how Reapers kind of blend into the scenery, always there but not. They're a vital part of life and death, but always outside of it. Thanks for hosting the interview and giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the chance. I loved The Soul Screamers series!!

I haven't read any books with reapers in it, but they do sound like interesting characters.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about reapers is their image. I enjoy following my imagination, seeing long dark clothes and big scythes... a bit emo, am I not?
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for YA books with reapers in them for a while now...and basically ended up impatiently stalking Croak's release.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think my favorite thing about reapers is how complex they can be as characters.
Thank you SO MUCH for the giveaway! And of course the interview.
*Returns to even more impatient stalking*
i think so far my favorite reapers books have been any of rachel vincent's soul screamers series. My very favorite reaper thing is (or was) actually a tv show called dead like me and I loved the reapers on there because they were all so completely different from each other. I liked that they weren't just your stereotypical reaper. I also like the fact that most reapers have some sort of hoodie on a lot of the time : )
ReplyDeleteI like Todd from Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series. I like how even though he's supposed to lose it eventually, Todd still keeps his humanity. I'm also a fan of his ability to pop in and out, a pretty useful form of transportation.
ReplyDeleteThough I have a few Reaper books on my TBR pile, I didn't have an opportunity to read them yet.
ReplyDeleteThe best think I like about Reapers is all the possibilities!

my favorite reaper book is The Reaping by M. Leighton. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI love Tod from the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent. He's a really cool character. I don't think I've read any other reaper characters.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about reapers is that they are supposed to keep the balance in the universe
ReplyDeleteWell I love Charley Davidson and I can't leave Out Tod from Soul Screamers. This book looks great.
ReplyDeleteWell I love Charley Davidson and I can't leave Out Tod from Soul Screamers. This book looks great.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about teapers is that they aren't coming after me, yet!
ReplyDeleteI like that they're dedicated.
ReplyDeleteI like that they are unpredictable :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite reaper book is first grave on the left by darynda Jones. I also lived the series dead like me.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read a really good one yet, but I would love to!
ReplyDeletehmmm, my favorite reaper books are the soul screamers by rachel vincent & you know I just love Tod! :) but I like that reapers have powers that other supernaturals don't... it's a fresh new take on things :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a favorite reaper book because I have not read any yet. I like them in the TV show Supernatural though.
ReplyDeleteMy first was first grave on the left and I can't wait to read more reaper books!
ReplyDeleteThe only reaper book I have read is Second Grave on the Left and I enjoyed it; however, wished I had read book one first LOL. I really enjoyed the television series on Syfi channel where the young girl was killed by the toilet seat from space and made a grim reaper, it was a hoot! I do love "snark, pointy objects, awkward flirting, death, mystery, and the bitter emo dead version of Edgar Allan Poe" and I think I will really enjoy Croak. Thank you for sharing with us today and for the awesome giveaway opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna go with my favorite Reaper show. Dead Like Me. I LOVE George!
ReplyDeleteWhile no Reaper-y books immediately come to mind (Croak could be my first Reaper-specific novel! 8D) I do like the concept. It's strange, thinking about something that's outside of death, and it's interesting to see all the different takes on them. I mean, sometimes you've got the usual, silent, hooded apparitions... Other times you've got wise-cracking, snarky reapers. Or ones that even show a bit of compassion. *shrug* ^^
ReplyDeleteI think the only book I've read involving reapers is Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series. While I like Tod and his boss (whose name I can't remember right now), I'm not sure there's anything I like about a reaper, in general. I mean, if one is coming for you, your time's up.
ReplyDeleteFavorite reaper thing = Dead Like Me, a tv show. :D
