Jeremiah Hunt on the Wandering Bus
by
Joseph Nassise

I gave up my eyes in order to see more clearly and let me tell you, I’ve seen some pretty strange things since doing so. My ghostsight lets me see the realm between this world and the next and I’d wager to say that you’d be surprised to hear of the variety of things that haunt that twilight realm, just waiting for the chance to pierce the Veil and reach on into ours.

Take the Wandering Bus, for instance.

It doesn’t appear on any route map or schedule. You won’t see it listed on the transportation company’s inventory sheet or on the driver’s assignment book. The transportation people won’t talk about it either; if you bring it up, they’ll just crack a joke and try to change the subject. But if you look closely, you can see the uneasiness in their eyes when they do so.

The bus isn’t for everyone. In fact, just by looking for it you’re insuring that you’ll never find it. The bus, or the Zero as it’s sometimes called, is only for those who hit the bottom only to realize there are even deeper places one can go, if you’ve got the courage to do so.

I should know; I’ve been there myself.

When you’re at your worst, when you think there’s nothing left that you can do, that all your options have come and gone and all you want to do is escape to somewhere, anywhere else, that’s when the Bus appears, idling on the corner, the driver giving you that extra moment to make it before the doors close, providing you’re willing to run for it, to show that you really need to make that bus.

If you can pay the fare, you do so, but if you can’t, well, that’s okay too. The driver will just nod and without a word tell you to take your seat, his face hidden in the shadow of the bill of his cap. The passengers are silent, for there’s no conversation on the bus, but that’s okay too. In fact, when you get off at your destination, you won’t remember your fellow passengers at all. Those who ride the bus want time and space to be alone and there’s plenty of that to go around.

I can see you’re skeptical, but trust me, the bus is real. I’ve seen it myself, idling at the corner, the long, gaunt faces of the passengers staring out the windows, caught somewhere between this world and the next. They say that if you ride the bus long enough you’ll eventually be brought back to the place where your troubles began and there was a time that I would have given anything to make that a reality.

But now?

Now I just watch the bus as it drives on past, following a route that no one but the driver knows or understands, and I hope that the passengers on board find what it is they are looking for…

Description:

In an urban fantasy that charts daring new territory in the field, Jeremiah Hunt has been broken by a malevolent force that has taken his young daughter and everything else of value in his life: his marriage, his career, his reputation. Desperate to reclaim what he has lost, Hunt finally turns to the supernatural for justice.

Abandoning all hope for a normal life, he enters the world of ghosts and even more dangerous entities from beyond the grave. Sacrificing his normal sight so that he can see the souls of the dead and the powers that stalk his worst nightmares, Hunt embarks upon a strange new career—a pariah among the living; a scourge among the dead; doomed to walk between the light of day and the deepest darkness beyond night.

His love for his departed daughter sustains him when all is most hopeless, but Hunt is cursed by something more evil than he can possibly imagine. As he descends into the maelstrom of his terrifying quest, he discovers that even his deepest fears are but prelude to yet darker deeds by a powerful entity from beyond the grave…that will not let him go until it has used him for its own nefarious purposes.

  1. Thanks for the awesome post and giveaway! I've never read this autor but he sounds awesome! I think that my fav lead male character would have to be Harry Potter b/c I can't for the life of me think of any others. Coffee hasn't kicked in yet. I've heard great things about Rob Thurman's series and Jim Dresden but haven't had a chance to read them. Just got Kevin Hearne's Druid series but haven't started yet.

    Thanks again!

As for my fave male lead I have a few, Harry Dresden [Jim Butcher], John Taylor [Simon R. Green], Atticus O'SUllivan [Kevin Hearne], Remy Chandler [Thomas E. Sniegoski] just to name a few :)

  3. It's hard to find male protagonists in UF, so I haven't read very many, but my favorites would have to be the brothers from the BDB - okay if you push me for one, I'd pick Z, but I love all of them. I also loved Atticus from Kevin Hearne' druid series.

  4. Loved the post! Very haunting.
That's tough questions as for me it's a tie between Cal Leandros (Rob Thurman) and Atticus O'Sullivan (Kevin Hearne)

  20. Finn MacCumhaill in Kersten Hamilton's Tyger, Tyger is my current favorite.

  21. Atticus O'Sullivan is a new favorite from Kevin Hearne's Druid series. One I haven't seen mentioned is Garrett from Glen Cook's books - Sweet Silver Blues is the first in the series. The books are paranormal mysteries, with Garrett the snarky investigator and The Dead Man as his house-bound employer. Sort of like the Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin books, but...not.

  27. I read the Heretic years ago and never realized there were 2 other books to go with it! I'm super excited for Eyes to See!! The cover looks AMAZING! As for my favorite male protagonist, I would have to say it's a two-way tie between Harry Dresden & Atticus O'Sullivan . . . with Connor Grey as a close second.
