Bathsheba on Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board

So…back in the day, I was a big fan of slumber parties. What teenage girl isn’t? Well, if you’ve ever been to a slumber party, you’ve probably played everything from Ouija boards to Bloody Mary. My favorite was always “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.” In theory, it’s about harnessing your powers of levitation to lift a friend off the ground. Or it’s about summoning spirits to cause him/her to levitate by the focus of your mental energy. Or…something along those lines.
(Mostly, it’s just about freaking your friends out.)
How the heck did this turn into a party game, anyhow? It’s kind of weird, and random. It dates back to the seventeenth century, and probably earlier. The purpose behind it was probably a link to spiritualism and séances. Back then, levitation was considered frightening and something done by spirits and witches. If you do a little bit of digging on the internet, you can find that the earliest recorded reference of “Light as a feather, stiff as a board” is in Samuel Pepys’s diary in 1665. I even found the entry online if you want to read it! Pepys’s friend told a story of walking the streets of France, when he came across a boy (dead or almost dying) lying in the gutter. The girls whispered a chant over him, and then all placed a finger on him and lifted him into the air.
(Pepys did not write whether or not his friend peed in his pants.)
After that, it sort of lingered on the edges of urban legends and eventually became a party game in Victorian times. The Victorians were fascinated with séances and death, and ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ became a popular pastime (though no one says if it really worked or not). The person being the ‘corpse’ would be the center of the small group, and the others would try and channel spirits to raise their friend into the air. From there, it moved on to slumber parties and the present day equivalent – recording video of yourself doing it and then slapping it up on YouTube.
(If you want to see it in a movie, I recommend ‘The Craft’ which is a really fun movie about four teenage witches. It’s one of my favorites, though the whole ‘witch’ thing is not exactly my area of expertise.)
If you want to give ‘Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board’ a try yourself, the rules are pretty simple. You need a volunteer to be the board/corpse and lay on the floor, as stiff as possible. Your friends place two fingers under you and begin chanting “Light as a feather, stiff as a board.” They chant it over and over again, and begin to try and raise you into the air after a certain period of time has passed. Sometimes it’s after twenty chants, sometimes after a hundred.
Does it work? Well…I don’t know of anyone that’s actually lifted into the air. Lord knows it never worked for me or any of my friends, but we were weird, goofy kids. There’s also the basic commonsense theory that if you get seven people trying to lift someone that’s a hundred pounds…it’s not hard to do. But the next time you have a slumber party, it’s worth a shot!
And then, call the agency and let me know if it worked.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Anne...I prefer my men warm. And a shifter just seems to scream sexy. As to what kind...some sort of large cat, I think. I'd like to see if I could make him purr....
ReplyDeletebarbbattaglia@yahoo.com
Thanks for such a fun post and giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'd say that I'd like to date a shifter of any kind b/c they seem to be more protective and caring. I'd be too paranoid around vampires to relax so they's out ;)

ReplyDeletentelhiard(at)gmail(dot)com
I would love to date an angel/fallen angel, or a big cat (leopard, lion, tiger, panther, etc.) shifter.
ReplyDeleteangeldream3[AT]gmail[DOT]com
Vampire, for the definitely. :-)
ReplyDeleteI just played The Craft movie for my teenage sister for the first time ever two weeks ago and she loved it! I have seen it so many times! I do also remember having played the game at a few slumber parties and it never worked.
ReplyDeleteI would love to date a tiger shifte. They are so Alpha. I haven't seen THE CRAFT. And yes I do remember the game.
ReplyDeleteOh this makes me miss slumber parties! I'm sure we thought this game worked more than once. teehee!
ReplyDeleteMy answer probably varies day to day but today I'm going with dating a werewolf 'cause it's supposed to snow and I'm freezing and already sick of winter. A snuggly warm werewolf sounds perfect right now. ;)
Assuming my hubby is not going to read this post...definitely a cat shifter. I have four cats. You think I want to introduce any kind of canine into this house!
ReplyDeletelol I remember doing that growing up and It never worked :) I would have to say a demon, I love me some bad boys :)
ReplyDeleteI would want to date a hunky alpha werewolf :)
ReplyDeleteWhile I wouldn't mind a sexy male vampire to date, I think right now I would prefer a strong, possessive alpha werewolf.

I think that a hunky werepanther would be a great date! Thanks for the awesome contest. bpatrick64113@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteI love shifters of all kinds, but my preference would be for either a cat shifter (lion, tiger, panther, house cat, doesn't matter), or a dragon. Those are my favorite paranormal creatures.

Pass me a werewolf please.
I would want to date a shifter, I have a thing for dragons. I wouldn't mind dating other kinds of supernaturals either. I think it would be neat to have a possive alpha male in my life.
ReplyDeleterachaelmccully@yahoo.com
I've been wanting to read this one. It looks really great!!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be fantastic to date a dragon shifter. They seem so ferocious, but not really scary, just protective.

It would have to be a supernatural that looked human and wouldn't accidentally kill me.
ReplyDeleteI would date a vampire or shifter
ReplyDeleteI also LOVED the movie The Craft. I watch it every time it's on. The paranormal world has always fascinated me.
ReplyDeleteThe supernatural Being I would want to date would be a Vampire. I have loved Vampires since I was a kid so of course I would have no doubts about dating one. Although I have recently started to like werewolves so I would not rule out dating one either.

I would love to date a shifter. Oh the dirty jokes that invokes!!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI would have to go with Vampire. They have been my favorites for as long as I can remember. And I have really bad allergies so I wouldnt want to be allergic to my shifter.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd like to date a werewolf.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say....vampire. Definitely, vampire.
ReplyDeleteOh a shifter. Hot alpha male. Um hmm.... :)
ReplyDeleteThe geeky delight I felt seeing a Samuel Pepys excerpt! Whenever I've dipped into a volume of his diaries, I've always read some good, albeit old, gossip. And the light as a feather game brings back fond memories of slumber parties past.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be practical and agree with Jasmyn: the best kind of supernatural to date is one who wouldn't accidentally kill me...

Ooo, what a toughy!! Vampire for sex appeal, but then that whole not-to-turn-or-to-turn thing would ruin things. Werewolves have the sex appeal too, but they might chew up my cats. Maybe a nice spellcaster, as long as they stayed on the white side.
ReplyDeletehmmm. I would want to date a Shifter because they have alot of indurence in bed and because i like my self a badboy
ReplyDeleteI would have to say a vampire! Thank you for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHmmm I think I'd like to date a werewolf, because they are ruled by there animal instincts and protective and hot.
ReplyDeleteI think would like to date a Werewolf. They are very loyal, passionate, hot-blooded, and they mate for life. Those traits will make a girl feel very special.
ReplyDeleteI would want to date a big cat shifter.
