Spooky Legends 2011 is ending today!  We though it fitting that since she opened this event, and since she has two amazing paranormal series with new releases this season, that we’d invite Jennifer Estep back to wrap up Spooky Legends.  I made a bold statement regarding Jennifer’s newest series, Mythos Academy, when I reviewed the debut TOUCH OF FROST earlier this year.  I said it was the best thing she’d written yet.  Of course I may have to revise my statement with the sequel KISS OF FROST is published by Kensington on November 29, 2011.  Jennifer’s protagonist, Gwen Frost is taking on the Hitchhiker urban legend for us today, and if you fall have in love with her as I have, you’ll be thrilled to know that Jennifer is giving away a copy of KISS OF FROST! See details below.

Gwen Frost on Hitchhikers
by
Jennifer Estep

Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to Abigail for having me on the blog again today. Thanks so much, Abigail!

So I’m here to close out the Spooky Legends event, which I am really honored to do. Today, I thought I would let my heroine Gwen Frost give you her view on some stories involving hitchhikers. Take it away, Gwen:

What is up with kids and scary stories? This time of year, they get texted from one phone to another at Mythos Academy as fast as the students can type, along with all the latest juicy gossip about who’s hooking up and who’s breaking up.

One of the stories going around campus these days is how any hitchhiker you pick up is bound to be an axe murderer – or something scary like that. Young, old, pretty, ugly, it doesn’t matter what the hitchhiker looks like – he’s bound to be crazy, according to all the stories the students have been whispering and texting to each other. The idea of hitchhikers has some of the folks in my second-year class pretty freaked out.

Really, hitchhiker stories don’t scare me all that much. Why not? Well, first of all, if I had a car (which sadly, I don’t), I would never be dumb enough to pitch up any hitchhiker. I might only be seventeen, but I’m not completely stupid.

Besides, axe murderers are scary enough, but hello, the hitchhiker could really be a Reaper of Chaos, which would be a hundred times worse. Since, you know, Reapers are bad guys who love murdering warrior whiz kids like me. Or worse, the Reaper could make you pull over and then sic a mythological monster like a Nemean prowler on you. I’ve been face to face with prowlers – big, black, pantherlike monsters with burning red eyes – a couple of times now, and I have no desire to get up close and personal with them ever again.

Of course, there are some folks who totally laugh at the idea of killer Reaper hitchhikers. Guys like Logan Quinn, a Spartan who’s as cute as is he is deadly. Of course, Logan would have no problem taking on a Reaper, since as a Spartan, he can pick up any object and automatically know how to kill someone with it. Logan is the kind of guy who could stab you to death with a windshield wiper.

Me? I’m pretty new at being a warrior whiz kid, so I’m not very good at fighting. Although I do have a pretty cool talking sword. His name is Vic, and he’s all the time talking about how we should go find some Reapers to kill. I don’t know about all that, but one thing’s for sure – no hitchhikers or Reapers will ever be getting in any car that I’m in. At least no Reapers that I know of. The tricky thing about Reapers is that they can be anyone, but now that I know they’re out there, I’ll be on my guard …

Thanks, Gwen. What about you guys? What are some of your favorite spooky and urban legends?

Available on November 29, 2011 from Kensington Books

Description:

Logan Quinn was trying to kill me. My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practically glowed with the thrill of battle...

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart — the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword — with Logan’s help — I just might die by the sword …

  3. I pretty much love them all :) I also love how inventive the authors get about their histories and abilities. Alot of them also pull out mythical creatures that I've never heard of and that's fun too.

  11. Hi! I would LOVE to read about unicorns! I LOVE them, and if they have wings, even more so!! I also love stories about the winged horse Pegasus. Horses are so beautiful, even if they have no wings or horns in the middle of their foreheads. But unicorns are so magical, so pristine...I've always fantasized about being the young maiden in the forest, waiting for one to appear and come to me. I would then give him a slice of apple, or some sugar, just like a regular horse.

  17. There are so many mythological creatures out there. I love any story that has mythological creatures in them. My most favorite is dragon stories though. I like many of the gargoyle stories that I have read lately and Thea Harrison has some neat creatures in her Elder Races series including a unicorn.

  20. I've read and enjoyed books with a lot of the supernatural creatures already mentioned. Not a hydra - but a snake body, multiple heads, and really bad breath sounds more like a bad guy than a hero/heroine. A sphinx might be interesting, and I don't think I've read a book with one as a major character.

Fan girlishness: I love Jennifer Estep's books! Can't wait for the next Mythos Academy book (or another Gin Blanco one).
