| I’m a fan of the “big head” cover when it involves dog fights and zombies. The color palette seems very old school to me, I think it works well. | I love how clearly this cover expresses exactly what kind of book this is…very cool |

| This is a new look for this cover model, I like that they made her hair and the sky pop rather than whiting out her skin. | Totally agree. This is my favorite since the debut. And I’m 95% sure the artist is Craig White. |

| I was not expecting his eyes to change, very cool. | Even without the animation this is so cool, but with? gorgeous. |

| I think I’d like this cover better without the wings, the image is a big over the top with it. | There is something so provocative about this image. Without the wings, he’s just a mopey teenager in his boxers…but once you add in that he’s an angel…it changes everything. |

| These are both fantastic, this cover makes me want to start this series. Is anyone familiar with it? | Dan is the man. I love this on multiple levels. Go read his full post on how he created this cover. |

| The starscape is nice, and the placement of the dude and the cover text makes it clear this is a Paranormal Romance without being overly cheesy. | I thought this was the next book in Stephanie Rowe’s Soulfire series at first. The background makes me think this is going to ba a Sci-Fi story…overall I’m pretty neutral. |

| A very different feel from book one, yet some great continuity with title and cover model. I like how they kept a few details in common without copying the first cover in the series. | It is very different from the debut, but I’m glad for the change. This cover has a quiet, haunting quality that I’m very intrigued by. |

Description: Finding your eternal soulmate - easy. Stopping a true-love-hungry evil - not so much… After breaking a centuries-old romantic curse, Emma Connor is (almost) glad to get back to normal problems. Although...it's not easy dealing with the jealous cliques and gossip that rule her exclusive Upper East Side prep, even for a sixteen-year-old newbie witch. Having the most-wanted boy in school as her eternal soul mate sure helps ease the pain-especially since wealthy, rocker-hot Brendan Salinger is very good at staying irresistibly close.... But something dark and hungry is using Emma and Brendan's deepest fears to reveal damaging secrets and destroy their trust in each other. And Emma's crash course in über-spells may not be enough to keep them safe…or to stop an inhuman force bent on making their unsuspected power its own.

| The use of black space on the first cover just about barely worked, but what the bridge can carry off these columns can’t. All of the empty space on this cover looks too clipart-y. | I really like how unique this look is. I kind of love it…the colors, the wings, the font. |

| A very different direction for the series. While I love the covers for Books 1 & 2, I like the very human cover model they chose for this cover. The title and finishing feels still feels a little unfinished, but I’m happy with this direction. | I’m so glad this book is getting published! Yes, it’s with a new pub, so no more beautiful Gene Mollica art, but this is a good, strong look. Can’t wait to read it. |

| I like the hibiscus from Book 1 better, but this rose fits well with the over all series theme. | This is so smart. It retains the beautiful glowing flower look from the series, but the addition of the guy on the back adds that surprise element. |

| This is a lot of red (especially compared to the accents on cover one), but I love how they carried through the curl of her hair in the wind. | I’m in love with Nekro’s art and this latest effort is more stunning than expected. I love the figures reaching up to grab her. Want this now. |

| I love everything about his cover, but the vapid expression on the cover model’s face (complete with sparkles), turned my thumb upside down. | So psyched for another paranormal/steampunk hybrid. I could do without the dim expression too, but I love everything else. |

| “Creepy” is a great word for this cover, I love the cover of the veil (enough to get over what appears to be some big Stepford hair behind it). | Creep is exactly the word I was thinking…but is a delicious way. Color me intrigued. |

Which are your Best and Worst?

I'm loving the Forged in the Fire covers. I really want to start that Anna Dressed in Blood now.
ReplyDeleteCool list. I liked the Darkest Knight one best, too. Couldn't tell you why, though. Just something about it.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes a good cover? I trying to come up with one for my MS, but the fact that I have zero artistic talent doesn't help.
Dan: I think it's best to branch out and find someone - even a design student or a friend of a friend - to give you a cover idea. Even if it's just for your website and not meant for self-publication, a bad or boring cover can do more damage than good. I see ppl try this on their website and I'm actually less interested if it's the sample cover is done poorly even if the story sounds good. Just being honest!
ReplyDeleteI love this cover post, it's always so interesting to see what's coming out. Thanks!
@Rain - Seeing this cover bumped ANNA DRESSED IN BLOOD up my TBR list, too.
ReplyDelete@Dan - I'd say Stephsco gave good advice, and Ilona and Gordon posted a breakdown of cover design on their blog: http://www.ilona-andrews.com/2011/09/15/cover-design/
I can't wait for 'Deadly is the kiss'!!! Thanks for sharing all of these!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat covers. I love that you post up-coming covers...I use your site as a reference for great covers for the Cover Cafe Cover Contest. I'm wondering if Half-Blood has a great front and back cover like Pure does?
ReplyDeleteWorst - Deadly is the Kiss, Best - By the Blood of Heroes. Great post. Loved some of those covers. Wish I could do them. I looked into cover design but sheesh, its technical - and requires a patience I'm not blessed with I think ;( Bravo to the designers. Shah. X
ReplyDelete@Lover of Romance - I haven't read any of her books yet, can you recommend where I start?
ReplyDelete@Linnae - I only read the eBook, so I'm not equipped to answer that, any one else see the real-live book?
@Shah - I know, right? I can barely arrange my living room, I wouldn't know where to start from a blank page.
I'm liking the premise of Revived!
