Sidney Ayers’s Guide to Michigan

Demons Prefer Blondes (Demons Unleashed, #1)Why Michigan? That's a question I get when discussing the setting for my debut release, Demons Prefer Blondes. My response is “Why not?” People always say to write what you know. Truth is, being the daughter of a Dutch immigrant, my life as kid was quite frugal. Our trips consisted of places of interest that were within driving distance. The closest I've gotten to England was a college study trip that unfortunately got cancelled due to lack of interest.

I've lived in Michigan for -umm--a long time. I know it well. Then again, Michigan and I have a love hate relationship. I love it in the summer, when those flowers bloom and I can bask in the warm glow of the sun. And then there's winter. Snow is pretty for the first couple of days. After about two months, though I'm ready to ship the fluff elsewhere. I wrote Demons Prefer Blondes in the winter, which leaves the reader with a very interesting picture of Michigan's colder months.

But now that it's summer, I just want to dispel those rumors. Apparently a  lot of people think that Michigan is in the Arctic tundra or something. I was chatting online with someone from California the other day. When I told him I was from Michigan, he said, “Wow. Isn't it cold there?”

“Only in winter,” I replied.

“Oh. I thought Michigan was in the north.” I'm glad this was an online chat, or he would have heard my snort.

Demons Like It HotHe still seemed kind of confused and I didn't have the patience or the expertise to explain that our lovely northern state is actually rather humid due to the large bodies of water that surround it. Why-oh-why did I never pursue that career in meteorology?

Oh, and here's a random bit of useless knowledge. Michigan's coastline is the longest in the country. How you ask? We have an Upper and lower peninsula, both are surrounded by Lakes Michigan, Superior and Huron.  Cool, huh?

And then there's Connolly Park, the small suburban town where Demons Prefer Blondes is set. The town itself is fictional, but it is based on my home town. I've changed some street names and places of interest to protect the innocent.  If you're familiar with this area of west Michigan, you'll be able to figure out which small suburban town I've based Connolly Park on. It was my way of giving a nod to my quaint community. Don't get me wrong. I'm proud of my town  but wanted to give it some anonymity. Coming up with creative names was a fun and refreshing and made writing the book even more enjoyable. I hope you all enjoy reading Demons Prefer Blondes as much as I enjoyed writing it.

    9. I live in Minnesota, grew up in a small town now live in a slightly bigger one but still most consider this the middle of nowhere. So even though its so humid ouside today you could wring out a sock I still love it and couldn't leave this "cold" state either. Guess I am as stuck as you are in Michigain! =)

Anyway, your book has been in my TBR list for a while and I would LOVE a chance to win one. Thank you thank you! Have a good rest of your summer before the snow flies!

    13. Michigan, one of the few places you can get snow one day, and 80 degree weather a couple of days later. Michigan is an interesting state- my great uncle actually named the town of rosebush.

    22. Some more Michigan love here: both my parents were from the UP (Upper Peninsula, for those not in the know), and we spent lots of summers there, surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. Good times. And one year -- I am NOT fibbing! -- it snowed on the Fourth of July...

The book sounds delightful. I may have to rush out and buy it!
