**Visit Dark Faerie Tales today for her Deadly Destination tour of Rachel Vincent’s Lazy S Ranch from Faythe & a chance to win CHICKS KICK BUTT**
We’re in the final week of Deadly Destinations posts now (have you missed any?) and today’s tour takes us to Boston’s magical Underbelly, home of Kasey Mackenzie’s chief magical investigator and Fury, Riss Holloway (GREEN-EYED ENVY, the second book in the Shades of Fury series is available now). Riss’s teenage niece Cori has been bribed into playing tour guide, and thanks to the wonderful people at Ace Books, three of you who comment on this post will win a copy of the book! See details below
Cori Holloway’s Guide to ‘The Belly’
by
Kasey Mackenzie
Sooo, my awesome aunt, Riss Hollway—that’s Chief Magical Investigator Holloway to you “mere” mortals—bribed me into writing this report up for her cause she totally sucks at typing. And, hey, I got an “A” in keyboarding last semester plus I kinda owe her for the whole saving my life multiple times thing. How could I say no? Okay, okay, I’m also grounded for sneaking out and almost getting my ass kidnapped, so it’s not like I have anything better to do…
Where was I? Oh yeah. “The Belly”: Boston’s magical Underbelly (such an original name, right?) where many of the area’s arcane residents co-exist in relative peace and quiet. Okay, I can’t even type that with a straight face, Aunt Riss. Sheesh. Let’s be honest here. The Belly may be somewhat quiet during the daylight hours, when most of its inhabitants are sleeping, but peaceful it never really gets. You got your Warhounds like Riss’s boyfriend Scott sparring with their mortal enemies, the Cats (AKA Bastai). Throw in greedy Goblins running the Belly’s only wholly-arcane-owned bank and trying with extreme prejudice to keep its money out of the hands of other greedy Goblins. Add in arcane criminals who try to hide from Furies like my aunt whose job it is to bring them to justice, and you very rarely find anything even close to “peace” in the square miles making up the Belly. Let’s not even get into the city’s first arcane serial killer fiasco Riss just finished investigating. (But seriously, go pick up that Kasey Mackenzie chick’s novelization of the case if you want the gory details. She so hit the nail on the head calling it Green-Eyed Envy!)
That’s not to say that everyone in the Belly is crooked or whatever—arcanes are just like mortals; you got your good, your bad, and your extremely ugly. The thing with arcanes is they’re much more “in-your-face” when it comes to just about everything. You grievously (that really a word, Aunt Riss?) offend a fellow arcane and chances are he or she is going to try to kill you right then and there if you don’t apologize pretty damned fast. And whenever arcanes spit on the laws set by either mortals or the gods and goddesses, they can pretty much count on a Fury showing up to bring them back to reality even faster. Furies are the best of the best for good reason: it takes badass arcanes to
keep the other races of badass arcanes on the relatively straight and narrow. Considering the downsides to being a Fury—running the risk of going completely crazy from the supernatural Rage that fuels most of their abilities, murdering their beloved serpent-familiars (Amphisbaena) in the process, not to mention losing all contact with their family and friends; pledging their potentially centuries-long lives to serving the Sisterhood of Furies and obeying the gods and goddesses implicitly; and watching their mortal family members age and die over and over again—it’s definitely not all sunshine, roses, and kicking immortal ass.
Still, as Aunt Riss and my grandmother, Allegra, remind me, it’s so worth it. Somebody has to bridge the gap between mortals and arcanes, and make sure that nobody starts another war between the two groups. Since Furies start out as mortals before their arcane abilities manifest in puberty (ewww, I hate that word), there’s no group better to keep the peace and, when necessary, wreak a little vengeance, arcane style. Even if it means sacrificing everything. Nobody knows that better than my Fury aunts—both the living and the dead.

About Kasey Mackenzie
|
Kasey Mackenzie lives with her husband and son in St. Louis, Missouri; home of the Gateway Arch, the baseball Cardinals, and the world’s greatest thin-crust pizza. Kasey was one of those students who always had her nose in a book—so no big surprise when she was voted “Teacher’s Pet” in her high school yearbook. Today, she is a voracious reader of fantasy, romance, suspense, and “soft” science fiction. She adores her German shepherd puppy, two cats, playing softball, and has recently taken up knitting. So far she can cast on, do the knit stitch, and cast off. Hey, it’s a start! |

Description:
Jealousy can be a killer...
As a Fury, Marissa Holloway belongs to an Arcane race that has meted out justice since time immemorial. As Boston's chief magical investigator, it's her duty to solve any crimes committed by or against supernaturals.
Months have gone by since Riss discovered some unwelcome truths about her past--and managed to stop a supernatural war. Since then things have been quiet. Too quiet. But that all changes when the bodies of Bastai, shapeshifters also known as Cats, begin piling up in Boston's magical underbelly--even though the legendary shifters are supposed to have ninety-nine lives.
One common thread ties the victims together: all were old flames of FBI Agent Harper Cruz. And since Harper and Riss's lover Scott Murphy enjoyed a one-night stand before he and Riss reunited, the Fury has twice the incentive to crack the case wide open, before the killer's green-eyed gaze turns in Scott's direction..

I really like the concept that the Furies act to police the supernatural community - talk about bringing ancient myths into the present! Red Hot Fury was a great read, and I know I'll like Green-Eyed Envy.
