Description
When it comes to jobs in hell, being a succubus seems pretty glamorous. A girl can be anything she wants, the wardrobe is killer, and mortal men will do anything just for a touch. Granted, they often pay with their souls, but why get technical?
But Seattle succubus Georgina Kincaid's life is far less exotic. At least there's her day job at a local bookstore—free books; all the white chocolate mochas she can drink; and easy access to bestselling, sexy writer, Seth Mortensen, aka He Whom She Would Give Anything to Touch but Can't.
But dreaming about Seth will have to wait. Something wicked is at work in Seattle's demon underground. And for once, all of her hot charms and drop-dead one-liners won't help because Georgina's about to discover there are some creatures out there that both heaven and hell want to deny…
"Mead cooks up an appetizing debut that blends romantic suspense with a fresh twist on the paranormal."--Booklist
"The mix of supernatural mystery, romance and reluctant succubus is great fun." --Locus
"An engaging read."--Jim Butcher, New York Times bestselling author
Review
I’m such a snob. I avoided this book for a long time primarily because I didn’t like the cover. That’s pretty much it. But the moment they repackaged it with a pretty new cover and I’m sold (well that and the fact that I loved Richelle’s Vampire Academy series. Plus the $4.79 Kindle price didn’t hurt either). Stupid, shallow, and thrifty. That’s me. Every time I write a review like this one, I swear I’ll never again judge a book by its cover because I might miss out on another fun and sexy read like SUCCUBUS BLUES.
Georgina is an excellent UF protagonist torn between what she needs to survive as a succubus: sex, and what she craves as a human: love. The problem being that any one she actually cares about she can’t even touch because her succubus nature would steal away part of their life. Whoever thought being a succubus would suck so much?
I was surprised by the lighter tone of SUCCUBUS BLUES compared to most books in the urban fantasy genre. It’s almost like a cross between a traditional urban fantasy and a paranormal chick-lit title. Light and funny in moments, smoldering and sexy the next, and dark and dangerous too. Somehow they all work together and the result is a blast to read. There are currently five books in the Georgina Kincaid series so far with number six, SUCCUBUS REVEALED, releasing on August 30, 2011, after only one book, I can tell that so many books to look forward to is a very good thing.

This was one of the first adult novels I ever read. It was years ago, but I had just finished reading the first two Vampire Academy novels, and I needed more Richelle Mead. Our local library had Succubus Blues (which is amazing because it's very small and doesn't have much paranormal outside of YA), so I immediately devoured it and wanted more. This is my absolute favorite series (although I need to catch up and read book 5), and I would've bothered you on twitter had I known you were holding out because of the covers. :) Glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI loved this book :)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteSara - I always want to hear if a paranormal fan has a favorite series I haven't read. So glad this one stays so good!
ReplyDeleteChristine - Me too :)
Frankie - it was really fun. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
You're so lucky you are coming into this series when the final installment comes out in September. Not to give anything away, but a few of the books leave on heart-palpitating suspense.
ReplyDeleteAnd with each installment Mead does get darker and more somber... it's a great evolution for Georgina, and marks one of the best adult paranormal series' out there.
So glad you liked it :)
Danielle - I love when I can read a whole series. I'm late in the game to Rachel Vincent's Shifter series too. It's fantastic not to have to wait.
ReplyDeleteThe cover can make or break, wrong as that might be. I will keep on walking if I see a cheesy cover. I chose SUCCUBUS BLUES a year or so ago because my buddy sent it to me and told me I HAD to read it.
ReplyDeleteWell then, if you haven't started these already, you need to read:
ReplyDeleteCarrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series
Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series
Richelle Mead's Dark Swan series (she can do no wrong)
Vickie - That's a good friend:)
ReplyDeleteSara - I've read Vaughn's & Estep's, but I need to start Dark Swan. Thanks!
Oh I loved this series so much! Can't wait for the final book :)
ReplyDeleteLisa - Have you read her Vampire Academy series? Really good too.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I love that you went past the cover. I have done that myself and once I actually read the book, I kick myself for being so silly. Glad you broke past that. But I am yet to start this, but have been dying to. So happy you liked this. Hope to soon *fingers crossed* Thank you for the great review hon :)
ReplyDeleteOffbeat - I wish I didn't get so hung up on covers, but I still do. i'm working on it :) This one was a lot of fun. Give it shot when you can.
ReplyDelete"Stupid, shallow, and thrifty. That’s me." - LOL.
ReplyDeleteNice review. I recently read a YA book about a half-succubus and I’m quite intrigued by them now. Brooke from Brooke Reviews really enjoys this series and has urged me to read it. I’m actually in the middle of Vampire Academy series and really enjoy Mead’s writing style.
Smash - Mead's writing style is great. I can't wait to start her Dark Swan series next.
ReplyDeleteVA is one of my absolute favorite series EVER.
ReplyDeleteI also avoided this series after reading the first few pages of it. I thought the first scene was just ridiculous but after reading this review, I went back and actually read it. I think it's a great book, but I feel like all of the characters are a little.. lacking. Maybe as I read through the series, the characters will seem a little more 3-d instead of so flat. I'm half way through the second book and still reading, so it's definitely not bad.
Morgan - Some of these 'lighter' paranormals take a bit longer to get into. I have the second book on my kindle and the next time I want a fun, light read, that's where I'll go.
