Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing [hosted by The Neverending Shelf] where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. And it is up to YOU to determine the winner!
Last weeks Throwdown asked: Characters vs. Covers? The verdict by split decision was Characters.
Richelle Mead announced on her blog a few days ago that, starting in August 2010 with Succubus Blues, Georgina is getting a makeover.
… I really love it. Believe it or not, that's actually almost identical to how I picture Georgina in her "everyday" form. (Though this Georgina has a bit more of a dangerous look in her eyes than my usual image!). That isn't to say I don't love all the other covers too. Every company, domestic and international, has done great things with her, and the beauty of a succubus is that she can look like anything! –Richelle Mead
No word yet on why the change, but I have to go with Richelle: I love it. I’ve never been a fan of the original covers. I haven’t read this series yet and I think the covers are largely responsible ( I know, how shallow am I?) They are a little too Elvira for me, but the new cover is hitting all the right urban fantasy buttons for me. Plus the Space Needle in the distance is immediately recognizable as Seattle. Come August, I know which one I’m buying. What do you think?
Old Georgina vs New Georgina?
For those worried their succubus books won't match, let me explain how it works. The succubus series is currently out in trade paperback--which are large paperbacks. The rest of the books that aren't out yet (#5 and #6) will continue to be released in trade paperback and still have the original style of art.
What you're seeing above is the beginning of the mass market editions for this series. Mass market is that small-sized paperback that's most common. The entire Georgina series will eventually be released in that form as well, and the mm's will have this new style of art. So, eventually over the next two years, all the Georgina books will exist in these two formats--and you can collect whichever editions you like to complete your matched sets. :) –Richelle Mead
Never heard of these yet..
ReplyDeleteI have On the Prowl book review today.
I have not read this series yet. I have to say NEW. I like the coloring better. The girl on the first looks evil, yes. But the new girl looks more dangerous, in a succubus sort of way.
ReplyDeleteI love this series! I like the new covers better but am glad the trade paperbacks will maintain continuity so my keeper shelf will stay orderly ;)
ReplyDeleteI've never like the old Succubus covers, just was reminiscent of that mid 90s series look with the faded out dead look. I'm big on exposure in the photos, and the new one is perfectly shiny with lots of nice exposure balance. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOoh... new Georgina for sure! I've read the series, and they deserve a great cover to match the great writing. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteOf course, there is also 'UK Georgina'! ;)

Abigail, the new covers all the way for me. I hate to admit it but part of my reasoning as well for not buying the series were the Trade covers. I love Richelle Mead's cover art for The Dark Swan mmpb books and now these new Georgina covers will match the more modern, edgy feel that the books are written in as well....

I luv this series but it took me awhile to pick it up. The covers are not attractive. First off Georgina is supposed to be hot with a slight tan, not vampish. I'm excited for the new change, I luv the new cover! I wish I had those in my collection instead of the originals.
ReplyDeleteI've read this series and I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't crazy of the old covers and I really like the new one! I might actually buy them jsut for the cover lawl!
I love the UK cover of Succubus Shadows (release soon) thought, it's the one I pre-ordered!
YOu should really read that series Abigail, I'm sure you'll love it!
Can I vote for the French or German covers? Those look like artwork I would hang on my wall. Seriously, I'd like to know how other countries gets books that look like these - http://www.richellemead.com/books/international.htm - while the US got what we got.
ReplyDeleteBut if I have to stick to one of the two US covers, I'll pick the new one as well.
If I have to chose between these two: The old version. It's more classy. I think the new one's a bit tacky (don't hit me for saying this).
ReplyDeleteThis said: I think the UK cover is the best I've seen sofar.
I guess I'm shallow too because I haven't read this series yet, mostly because the covers didn't appeal to me. I love the new look and once they hit mass market size I will pick them up! I like that look in Georgina's eyes- dangerous and sexy. I'm sure my husband will appreciate that I will finally be reading a book that doesn't feature a hot guy on the cover:)
ReplyDeleteI love this series. Adore it, in fact. And I love Richelle Mead.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go with the new Georgina, but only because Richelle said on her blog that this new model is closer to how she imagines Georgina in her head (minus the evil eyes)
I think Richelle Mead has some of the most gorgeous foreign covers of any author. The German VA covers are stunning. I wish more authors would showcase their foreign covers the way Richelle does.
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact these new covers are for the mmpb release of the series, which is only out in trade pb right now in North America. Considering it'll take over 2 years to have all the actual books released in mmpb, i'M quite happy I already have my hands on them. And personally, I think the new cover set, while pretty, makes it look like another UF series, which it is not.
ReplyDeleteI have not read these books yet, but picking the cover is hard. From the old or the new... They both have great features about them. I don't know if I can pick one with out reading the book but... ahhhh....I think I will go with the old one. Kind of a darker look to it.

ReplyDeleteI have the first book with the cover on the left in mm, not trade paperback. I found it at Walmart over Christmas. I guess they started publishing first mm book with original cover for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI like both covers but I'd have to read the book to see which I feel fits the book the best.
I like the new covers more. I kind of feel betrayed becuase now the good covers are coming out and I have to be finish my trade collection. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteThe new cover is much better. She matches Georgina's description a lot more in the new one. I would replace mine with the new one if it wasn't signed!
ReplyDeleteThis series has the best foreign covers, you should check them out. The are beautiful.
I think I'm in the minority, but I like the old cover, BUT I wish the girl on the cover had more of a brown tone in her hair instead of the red and I hate the covers after the first one. Not a big fan of the new cover she looks like a blonde to me.
ReplyDeleteLove the new cover waaaaay better than the old one. I so want to buy the new ones when they come out! I read the 1st book and really enjoyed it, and I am on the waiting list for the 2nd at my library.
ReplyDeleteThe new covers are definitely better in my opinion. The older ones always just felt old, didn't have enough clarity and Georgina looks dead in them. Nothing like the way I imagine her when reading the books.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a fan of the old covers. Love the new one.
