Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing [hosted by The Neverending Shelf] where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. And it is up to YOU to determine the winner!
Last weeks Throwdown asked Which do you like more: Blue Diablo by Ann Aguirre US vs UK cover? The winner by split decision was: The UK cover.
In honor of The Twilight Saga: New Moon movie premiere tonight at midnight (I’ve got my ticket, do you have yours?) I’m going to start the war again:
I’ll gladly admit that I’ve been firmly in the Edward camp throughout all four books (and Midnight Sun) and definitely after seeing the Twilight film. I’ve been going back and re-reading New Moon before seeing the film adaptation so I can make a fair comparison, and guess what? Jacob is not as easily dismissed this time. Oh don’t get me wrong, Edward is still first in my heart, but Jacob (and I don’t mean the actor because I don’t think Taylor quite embodies the character as Stephenie wrote him) is worthy of his leading man status. How did I miss that the first time through? Was I so dazzled by Edward that, like Bella, I couldn’t even see what was right in front of me? Maybe. I can’t help but wonder if I would have realized this sooner if Jacob had been in a different world, one where he wasn’t constantly compared to the incomparable Edward (again the character not the actor, although I agree with Stephenie that Rob is the Edward she envisioned). Either way, I’m reading him differently now. And Bella too for that matter. I never understood before how she could even try to love Jacob after Edward. The whole Team Edward vs Team Jacob seemed like a moot debate before. But I think I’m ready now to look at the question from a more objective place now. So what are you?
Team Edward or Team Jacob?

I've always been Team Jacob (except with the gray area of him falling for Bella's kid - that was just way off).
ReplyDeleteJacob seems to encourage Bella to be all she can, without needing to fall back on her vampire. (Hugs)Indigo
Team Edward. :)
ReplyDeleteI often found Jacob to be annoying in the books although I'm looking forward to how his character is handled in the new film.
xx,
E.J.
Those are two stuning pictures! I am completely Team Jacob :D
ReplyDeleteThis truly is a hard decision The books I would have to say Team Edward, however the relathionship forming between Jacob and Bella and how much he truly does hold that spot that is keeping Bella together makes you rethink things...
ReplyDeleteI kinda have to root for the underdog and go Team Jacob for a final decision what can I say I am a sap for the second man.. the hidden guy.
Team Jacob! Edward always has kind of annoyed me.
ReplyDeleteNatalie @ Mindful Musings
I like Jacob. But I'm a team Edward.

I always root for the underdog.
ReplyDeleteTeam Jacob all the way!

Indigo, yes that particular development in Breaking Dawn was high on my creep factor too. I mean what happens when she grows up and starts asking questions? Ick.
ReplyDeleteJacob does have his good points, but often he just comes across as a sulky teen, wheras Edward is deep. I guess that makes me Team Edward!
ReplyDeleteMind you Bella is a sulky teen too, she is definately my least fave character in the series!
I'm team Edward in the books.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Team Jacob, only because of his looks and I don't care for Robert P. as Edward.
I guess it's draw for me. ;)
I've always been Team Switzerland. I like Edward, but I found him kind of stalkerish in Twilight. He grew on me quickly and I adore him in Midnight Sun, but Jacob has this huge place in my heart as well.
ReplyDeleteJake is by far my favorite character in the series, but I wouldn't necessarily say I'm Team Jacob. As for the comments about Breaking Dawn, I choose to pretend it does not exist because I feel like it's a horrendous butchering of the characters and is an example of how to completely destroy who the characters used to be and have them do and say things that are way out of character.
Team Jacob all the way!
ReplyDeleteWoof!
Jacob has definitely gone up in my estimation too. He was really good in New Moon.
ReplyDeleteNikki, I loved Midnight Sun too. I can't wait to read the whole thing:
June 2008 Update: In response to the outrageous number of emails that I have received with questions concerning Midnight Sun, I talked to Stephenie this weekend and she asked me to let everyone know that Midnight Sun is her next project. She has not yet finished writing it (and there is no timeline set up, so we all need to put a lot of effort into being patient for a while longer), but she is definitely still planning on having it published. And, after Breaking Dawn comes out, Stephenie will have much more time to focus on writing Midnight Sun.
