Different artist I think. I think that is a lot closer to how we picture Kate.

Truthfully I wouldn’t care if what the 5th Kate book looked like.  I’d buy it anyway.  But, this is my favorite cover so far.  I wish Curran was bigger, but I love the new Kate.Thumbs up

When she discovers that her enemy, Alistair Knight, went back in time to Victorian-era New York in order to destroy her family, Tamsin is forced to follow him into the past. Stranded all alone in the nineteenth century, Tamsin soon finds herself disguised as a lady's maid in the terrifying mansion of the evil Knight family, avoiding the watchful eye of the vicious matron, La Spider, and fending off the advances of Liam Knight. As time runs out, both families square off in a thrilling display of magic. And to her horror, Tamsin finally understands the nature of her fateful choice.

Hounded by Kevin Hearn

Series: The Iron Guild #1
Publication Date/Publisher: April 26th 2011 by Del Rey
Cover Artist: N/A
Cover Source: The THRILLIONTH page
Author Comments: My Thoughts:

I've said it before and I'll say it lots more: Del Rey has been completely lovely to work with. Tricia and the art dept. deserve mad props for this cover, and for the Hexed and Hammered covers as well. They brought Atticus to life and they incorporated my suggestions beautifully; I will build them a shrine and leave them offerings of gummi bears and beer.

I like the movie poster look of the cover & I’ll bet it looks even better in person.Thumbs up

Book Description:
Atticus O'Sullivan has been running for 2,000 years, and he's a bit tired of it. After he stole a magical sword from the Tuatha Dé Danann (those who became the Sidhe or the Fae) in a first century battle, some of them were furious and gave chase, and some were secretly amused that a Druid had the cheek to defy them. As the centuries passed and Atticus remained a fugitive—an annoyingly long-lived one, at that—those who were furious only grew more so, while others began to aid him in secret.

Now he's living in Tempe, Arizona, the very last of the Druids, far from where the Fae can easily enter this plane and find him. It's a place where many paranormals have decided to hide from the troubles of the old world—from an Icelandic vampire holding a grudge against Thor to a coven of Polish witches who ran from the German Blitzkrieg.

When Atticus hears from the Morrigan that his nemesis, Aenghus Óg, has found him once again, he decides to stay and fight rather than run. In so doing, he becomes the center of a power struggle amongst the Tuatha Dé Danann, where the sword he stole is the key to a plot to overthrow Brighid, First among the Fae. To thwart this determined deity, Atticus will need all the power he can muster to deliver himself from evil.

Author Comments: My Thoughts:

Here it is!! The cover of DIE FOR ME, in all it’s amazing, dark, spooky glory! Yes, that’s Pont Neuf behind Kate, and Pont des Arts just visible behind that. Is it allowed to have a crush on your book cover? Because I’m a bit head-over-heels.

The colors here are breathtaking.  Really gothic feeling. Thumbs up

Grave Dance by Kalayna Price

Series: Alex Craft #2
Publication Date/Publisher: July 5th 2011
Cover Artist: Aleta Rafton
Cover Source: Kalayna Price
Author Comments: My Thoughts:

Personally, I think the it's absolutely striking. It retains the ethereal and contemplative aspect of the first while the closer crop and forward angle of Alex's body adds an edge of power and assertiveness. The cityscape visible behind the cemetery is a gorgeous touch, and I love that they kept the subdued blue greys with just the splash of color being Alex's shirt (green this time). In short, I love it!

This cover is so quintessential urban fantasy that I’m dying.  Love the smoke, love the city, and LOVE Alex!Thumbs up

Seventeen-year-old Pierce knows what happens to us when we die.

Though she thought she escaped him—starting a new school in a whole new place—it turns out she was wrong. He finds her.
What does John want from her? Pierce thinks she knows... just like she knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly Heaven. But she can't stay away from him, either, especially since he's always there when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she might find herself back in the place she fears the most.

Series: N/A
Publication Date/Publisher: June 7th 2011 by Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Cover Artist: N/A
Cover Source: La Femme Readers
Author Comments: My Thoughts:

It's set in the same world as Magic Under Glass but instead of being Victorian England/America-ish, it's based on Italy around 1800. (And man, I did way too much research on actual Italy for it being a made up Italy...)

So many neat details here: the ‘B’ that turns into a mermaid tail, the horse in the wave behind her…beautiful.Thumbs up

A Need So Beautiful by Suzanne Young

Publication Date/Publisher: June 21st 2011 by Balzer & Bray
Cover Artist: N/A
Cover Source: La Femme Readers
Author Comments: My Thoughts:

I just want to say that I'm SO HAPPY WITH MY NEW COVER!!!
I have obsessed and fretted about what the cover for A NEED SO BEAUTIFUL (Summer 2011) would look like. The book is about a girl who is compelled to help people, even though each time she does, her friends and family start to forget who she is--her very existence fading into a glowing light. So... what kind of cover could express that????
Well, I'm so excited to show you!! I just think.... it's so pretty. :-)

Everything about this cover is sunshine…and the premise sounds super compelling. Thumbs up

How I Blog is a regular feature on All Things Urban Fantasy where I share my tips, tricks, methods, and secrets to book blogging.  You can read all the previous How I Blog posts HERE.

ARC Protocol

This is the third and final post in my How I Blog ARC series.  We’ve talked about General ARC Resources (part 1) and Requesting ARCs (part 2) and now that you are all swimming in ARCs, it’s time to talk about ARC Protocol.

These are the steps I go through when I get an ARC:

  1. Happy Dance!  ARCs are always awesome.  I never fail to get excited when one arrives at my house (or in my inbox).
  2. Write it down. I mark it down in 3 different places (Yep, I’m that anal):
    1. Goodreads: I add the book to my Goodreads Bookshelf and tag it ‘For Review’ so it shows up on my Received for Review widget & ‘TBR’ so it shows up on my TBR widget
    2. Google “Review Schedule” Document: ATUF has two reviewers, so every title that Julia or I receive gets marked down on our shared document and assigned a reviewer and review by date (as close to the release date as possible).
    3. PDA/Phone: I have several different bookcases in my house and they are all categorized by genre, so in order to know what book is where, I keep a mobile list of all my TBR books (and who sent them).  It helps for when I’m in a bookstore so I don’t end up buying duplicates of books I already own.
  3. Stick to the schedule.  If I accept an ARC, I’m promising to review it in a timely manner.  This often means I have to wait to read the books I’ve been dying to read in favor of the ones that are releasing sooner.  I try and be realistic about my schedule so I have time to read both new and older title each month, but I’ve learned the hard way that titles can get piled up before you know it.   Again, make a schedule and keep it.
  4. Post the review on multiple sites.  In my Review Policy I state that every title reviewed on ATUF will be posted on Goodreads, LibraryThing, and Amazon.  You can also link your blog to Twitter and automatically Tweet all your posts.  More exposure for the book and your site.  Everybody wins.
  5. Email the sender.  Whether the ARC came from an author or publicist or whoever.  Good or Bad, send them your review link when you post it.

And that’s it.  Just remember that that little disclaimer usually printed on the cover that says DO NOT SELL or NOT FOR SALE means do not post this book on eBay or anywhere else.  I personally can’t keep all of the ARCs I receive for several reasons:  I don’t have the space, and if I liked the book I try to buy the finished copy so I can support the author.  I end up passing them along to other reviewers or hosting giveaways.  You can also donate them to ARC tours like 1 ARC Tours

And in the words of Forrest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.  I hope these ARC posts have been helpful.  Again my way of doing things doesn’t have to be your way.   Other reviews have different methods that work for them and you probably will too.

I’ll close with my #1 piece of advice for getting ARCs: If you review them, they will come.  Yep, review books.  Lots of them.  Don’t get bogged down with memes and disposable content.  If you want to receive books for review, show that you actually review books.  Two of my best publisher contacts came about because they emailed me after reading specific reviews (Hey, I saw that you reviewed X, we’d like to send you Y for review if your interested…)

Book Description

REVIVED. REFRESHED.
AND READY FOR REVENGE.

Eric has lost his strip club, his Mustang, and even Marilyn, the elderly love of his (mortal) life. Even his body was obliterated. In short, they almost got him. But when you're a vampire, "almost" is a very important word. With a little magical help from his friends, Eric is restored to corporeal form, but his treasured Mustang gets caught up in the sorcery and winds up with an unlife of its own. Now, along with "Fang the 'Stang," he's out to save Marilyn from one of Void City's most powerful soul-stealing demons. But salvation comes at a high price, forcing Eric to venture into his own worst nightmare, Vampire High Society, to uncover the truth about the origin of his powers.

At the same time, Eric's ex-girlfriend, Tabitha, has begun to wonder exactly what it was that she admired about those High Society Vampires in the first place. Her quest to find her own place in this deceptively vicious circle may lead her right back to Eric's side -- if her little sister, Rachel, doesn't kill her first. And Eric will need all the help he can get, because it looks like someone is after his soul, too. Blood will flow, fangs will be bared, and the claws will come out, because revenge is never pretty...and Eric has plenty to pass around.

 Review

Parts of J. F. Lewis’s follow-up to his urban fantasy debut, STAKED, are crazy good (the humor, the pacing, the world building), other parts are crazy frustrating, for example the bit of bait and switch when it comes to cover art.  A woman is featured on the cover, and even though there are a number of chapters told from the perspective of Tabitha, the main protagonist in REVAMPED is Eric.  I knew this going in, but I can imagine a lot of readers feeling duped.

I only had one real problem with REVAMPED, but it’s a biggie.  It was the struggle to find redeemable qualities about the main characters in order to care about them.  First off, everyone is a giant  whore.  Eric is a scumbag (with occasional moments of opportunistic compassion).  He is truly in love with a woman who he’s had to watch grow old because she didn’t want to become a vampire with him, but he has a girlfriend (Tabitha) who he neglects, and he’s sleeping with her sister (Rachel) on the side.  I found myself giving him a pass on his total lack of morality because he was funny and he told everyone upfront that he was an unrepentant bastard.

I found it much harder to give a pass to his on/off girlfriend Tabitha. She goes from sleeping with a fat, old vampire in exchange for a luxury apartment, to shacking up with Eric’s best friend in said luxury apartment, to essentially begging Eric (on her knees) to take her back even though she can literally smell her sister on him.

To make things worse, Tabitha and Rachel know that Eric is sleeping with both of them and instead of kicking him to the curb, they compete over him. Rachel even tells Eric when he and Tabitha are heading to bed that he has to screw her twice for every one time he screws Tabitha.  Classy.

Parts of REVAMPED were really funny, the political posturing between all the vampires in Void City was endlessly entertaining, and I’m crazy curious to find out about Eric’s unique vampire origins, but I couldn’t stand how pathetic the female characters were, so much so that I’m not sure I’ll be buying the third book in the Void City series, CROSSED, when it releases on January 25, 2011

Sexual Content: Several non graphic sex scenes

My Rating:
