Review
Like TORN before it, TANGLED is another perfectly titled book. That one word says it all about Mo and her increasingly complex life. Her life, her heart, her choices are all hopelessly tangled together. Her uncle is the Godfather of Chicago and her dad has been in prison most of her life. She wasn’t supposed to fall for her mob appointed body guard, but then again, she wasn’t supposed to end up as a magical savior—or destroyer depending on who you ask—either. Both the Mob and the Magical community want to use her…and neither side cares if it kills her.
One of my complaints with TORN was how long it took for the supernatural elements to present themselves. In TANGLED, the magical and the mundane are prominently featured right from the first chapter. Even though Mo's mob family issues aren't connected to her troubles with the magical community, certain characters--not to mention Mo herself--are tangled up with both worlds so the end result feels very cohesive. Sadly, I think the love triangle that was so compelling in TORN, suffered the most in TANGLED. I didn't feel torn between the magical Luc or the mob-connected Colin. I knew who I wanted Mo to end up with, and apart from a couple weak moments that dropped her a notch or two in my estimation, Mo did too.
Romantic grumbles aside, the ending of TANGLED was pretty fantastic. Lots of anguish, revelations, and a big fat deal with the devil which promises to tangle up Mo's life even more in BOUND, the last book in the Torn trilogy, when it hits shelves on June 26, 2012. It hasn't been a perfect series so far, but it's unique enough, and the endings compelling enough to earn BOUND a spot on my wish list, and hopefully yours too.
