Cover Art Coverage: 16 New Titles!

There are some very interesting Omnibus covers this week, can you arrange them in the order of Most, Less, and Least like their series covers (I think our feelings on the matter are pretty clear).  There’s some amazing use of fire, a few homemade covers that look great, and at least one cover that looks homemade when it shouldn’t.

Description:

A love so strong, even eternity can’t separate them.

Evie Starling has lived a relatively uneventful life hanging out with friends, gossiping about boys, and driving her 1966 Mustang. All of that changes when she moves to Gunnison, Colorado, to start college and meets two mysterious men.

For centuries, Alex Night and Emil Stone have yearned for Evie—but they each have their own reasons for wanting to be with her. When both men claim to be her soul mate and tell her about an unbelievable past, Evie learns that she’s not the person she thought she was. Soon, Evie finds herself in the middle of an age-old battle between the Amaranthine Society—the soul protectors, and the Daevos Resistance—the soul destroyers. With a past she doesn’t understand, and a future rife with danger, Evie has to decide who she can trust. But Alex and Emil aren’t the only ones who want Evie, and her soul is about to become the rope in an eternal tug-of-war.

This is a lovely, soft cover.  I think the title font may be a little too difficult to read, but that may just be on smaller, digital images. I agree about the title font, but otherwise, I like the soft vintage feel.

Description:
As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco’s job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. Her boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond.
Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans’ fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters.
While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the other world crumbled. Now, the Undead and the Restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover.
To make it worse, Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards’ Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ’s new partner, and an undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love serves up one bitter gumbo.

I like the mix of modern and high fantasy elements (the tank top and a magic staff, for example). This looks just as cool as it sounds.

Abigail’s ThoughtsThumbs up

A totally different feel from previous covers, despite a familiar image.  This cover is nice, but unlike the more stylized feel of the other covers there’s nothing about this one that says paranormal or steam-punk. I like this.  Yes, it’s different and I do prefer the original covers, but I’m a fan.  I wish there would have been some type of edgy element to nod at the genres, but overall it’s good.

I love the lightning and lighting on this cover, it makes the decimated buildings at her sides all the more eerie. This looks very cool and almost understated.  I’m betting that fans of Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series are going to eat this up.

The elements of this cover look cobbled together, the title in particular looks out of place.  I love the cover model at the right, she looks distinct and individual, but they should have put a lot more work into her backdrop. I can’t tell if the image quality is poor, or the colors are meant to look like that.  Either way I’m not loving it.

I was a bit on the fence for this one.  The model’s exaggerated features and artfully torn t-shirt are just about too much for me, but at least these elements create a distinct character (and who knows, maybe Deacon intends to look like Jafar).  I’m totally digging this.  Everything is so testosterone laden.  Hope the story is just as tough.

All colors combine to make white… very nice way to tie the individual covers into an omnibus. I like the white choice too.  I wasn’t expecting it, but I like it more and more the longer I look at it.

I’m a little fascinated by how her shirt grows more and more substantial with each progressive cover (definitely the opposite of usual trends), but this cover seems pretty “blah” to me.  Weapon in each hand, half a face… even the background is uninteresting. I like how consistent the covers for this series have been.  Even without any text, I’d know this was a Horngate Witches book.

I love the flames on his sword, and the fact that his tattoos look distractingly readable.  I’d have a hard time listening to him speak, I’d be tilting my head and trying to sound out symbols.  This is a much more Paranormal Romance/commercial cover than the previous two, I’m not a fan of that direction. Swords on fire are so much better than regular swords.  RAZIEL is still my favorite, but they are all strong.  I do wish the colors had been a bit more muted like the previous covers.

Simple and fun, I like these two better than the prior two in the series. I’m a huge fan of authors continuing their series after publishers drop them.  I wish more authors would do that.  As for the covers, these are cute and fun, and just the right amount mischievous.

I love this cover!  The cover model up front reminds me of Olivia from Fringe, and the fiery wings in the background are a cool touch. I like this much more than the debut cover.  The background is so interesting.  I’m sure I’m not catching half the details, but what I can see looks awesome.

I could go either way with this cover.  I don’t like how everything is centered and her hair stands straight out to the right, and the red glow is a little “peachy” on my screen.  But the angel details up above are lovely, and most of the elements come together very well. I’m right on the fence with this one too.  It’s almost really good, but not quite.

Description:

In this wry take on the post-apocalyptic horror novel, a pandemic has devastated the planet. The plague has sorted humanity into two types: the uninfected and the infected, the living and the living dead.

Now the plague is receding, and Americans are busy rebuilding civilization under orders from the provisional government based in Buffalo. Their top mission: the resettlement of Manhattan. Armed forces have successfully reclaimed the island south of Canal Street—aka Zone One—but pockets of plague-ridden squatters remain. While the army has eliminated the most dangerous of the infected, teams of civilian volunteers are tasked with clearing out a more innocuous variety—the “malfunctioning” stragglers, who exist in a catatonic state, transfixed by their former lives. I like the blood spilled across this sepia cover, very ominous. Having just read about werewolves on the Titanic in FATED, I’m beginning to wonder if there were any actual humans on this ship. This has just enough creep factor to suck me in & I love the sinking ship.

This cover is a *huge* departure for the series, much more fantasy than urban fantasy, but I love the ornate ink drawing that centers it. This is beautiful.  Haven’t read the series, but I’d be very tempted to try it based on this cover.

  2. I'm actually not a fan of any of these covers. None stand out to me, and most seem to mimic the standard covers for their genres. I'd be tempted to pick the Strange Angels and Betrayals cover...except that I don't think it really fits the series.

  3. Where can I get a sword with flames? Thanks for the post girls...I love when you do covers.

  4. @Sullivan - Finally, Titanic stories that I'm interested in! Though, I'm going to want to read FATED first, I'm a sucker for werewolves.

@Ruby - I completely agree with you on the STRANGE ANGELS Omnibus cover. It's gorgeous, it's so different than then typical, teen covers of the rest of the series... but being so different makes it a bit of a problem. I wish this was a re-issues of STRANGE ANGELS, not a completely out of sync omnibus cover.

@Rain - The eternal question: Where did you get that flaming sword? I'm thinking Old Navy is out... Maybe we can make a compendium of covers with flaming swords, I think that's a list worth maintaining. Of course, all I've got is WARRIOR at the moment. Talk about a short list...
