Jennifer L. Armentrout is the author of the young adult urban fantasy Covenant series about the teenage decedents of gods training to fight daimons at the Covenant school.  Jennifer is talking today about YA cover art and her debut HALF-BLOOD (available on October 18, 2011 from Spencer Hill Press).  Our review will be up soon.  In the meantime, don’t forget to follow the rest of the HALF-BLOOD book tour hosted by Teen Book Scene.

ATUF: The YA genre is known for beautiful, unique covers, like the one for your book, HALF-BLOOD.  How important do you think the cover art for a book is?

Picture

JLA: Thanks! I think the cover of Half-Blood is very unique and also very important to the story. For those who’ve read Half-Blood and even Daimon have probably picked up on the significance of the flower.

ATUF: How closely does the final cover match your original vision for HALF-BLOOD?

JLA: I didn’t really have anything in mind when I wrote Half-Blood. Covers are so not my area of creative expertise. If it was up to me, there’d be stick figures on the thing. Luckily my publishers had that covered.

ATUF: How much, if any, input did you have on the cover?

JLA: I got to have a lot of input in the cover. There were so many different versions at first and they included me in every step, incorporating any ideas I may have had as long as I didn’t say I wanted an apple on the cover or something like that.

ATUF: Do you know who the cover artist is?

JLA: Yep! The cover artist is Kate Kaynak.

ATUF: What type of flower is on the cover?  Does it have a special significance? What about the smoke effect?

JLA: The flower is a hibiscus and it is very significant, as is the smoke. Anymore details is spoilery.

ATUF: Do you have a favorite of the covers released for the Covenant series so far, including the prequel?  Why is it your favorite?

 Daimon (Covenant, #0.5)Half-Blood (Covenant, #1)Pure (Covenant, #2)

JLA: Oh man, I shouldn’t say this but I’ve seen mock ups on the third and final novel and they are my favorite. They match Half-Blood and the sequel Pure in a way, but… want to know a secret? They actually feature two of the characters which I’m uber excited about.

ATUF: Thanks so much for stopping by Jennifer.  Come back anytime!

PictureJennifer lives in West Virginia. All the rumors you heard about her state aren’t true. Well, mostly.

When she’s not hard at work writing, she spends her time, reading, working out, watching zombie movies, and pretending to write. She shares her home with her husband, his K-9 partner named Diesel, her hyper Jack Russell Loki, and her pet turtle called Michelangelo. Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent her time writing short stories. Therefore explains her dismal grades in math.

She writes Adult and Young Adult Urban Fantasy and Romance.  Half-Blood, the first book in a planned series, is her debut novel and is available October 2011 .

Description:

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck
