Understanding the Previously Deceased: A Fact Sheet
City of Boston
Office of the Mayor
I. Introduction
Boston is a city that prides itself on its diversity. Our neighborhoods weave together a rich tapestry of people from many traditions and all walks of life. This diversity includes a variety of paranormal Bostonians, including previously deceased humans (PDHs). Afflicted by a devastating disease, the previously deceased have recovered to become productive citizens of our city.
Whether you have a previously deceased family member, acquaintance, former neighbor or co-worker, or you just see the occasional PDH out and about in the city, this fact sheet gives you the information you need to understand the previously deceased.
II. The H-DED-1 Virus
The previously deceased were infected by the virus known as H-DED-1. The illness caused by this virus consisted of two phases: In the first phase, which took place immediately upon infection, those afflicted fell into a deathlike state. This phase lasted for approximately three days. In the second phase, the previously deceased regained consciousness, animation, and volition. In layperson's terms, they came back to life.
It is important to note that H-DED-1 no longer exists in the wild. Like smallpox, the virus is extinct. The original strain mutated into something no worse than the common cold. Humans cannot catch H-DED-1 from someone who has had the disease.
III. Physical Characteristics and Needs of the Previously Deceased
As a result of their disease, the previously deceased have a number of distinctive physical traits:
-
Spongy-textured, greenish-gray skin that cannot tolerate sunlight -
Redness in the parts of the eye that were previously white
-
Extreme keratitis sicca, or dry-eye syndrome, resulting in an inability to produce tears
-
Stiffness of gait
-
Enhanced strength
-
Increased appetite
-
Insensibility to heat and cold
-
Extreme slowness in healing (possibly an inability to heal)
None of these physical traits is cause for alarm. They are unavoidable consequences of an H-DED-1 infection. Although the long-term effects of these conditions are unknown at this time, in the short term they have not been observed to impair the ability of PDHs to function.
Because of their altered physical state, the previously deceased have some special needs:
Sunlight avoidance. Direct sunlight has been observed to damage the skin of the previously deceased. Sunlight exposure causes a PDH's skin to take on a bright orange hue and become pitted. Slowness in healing means that skin damaged in this way does not recover. Previously deceased humans who go out in the daytime must cover their skin; sunblock provides insufficient protection. Sunglasses with polarized lenses are also recommended.
Ample food supply. Reanimation increased both the strength and the metabolism of PDHs, leading to an increase in appetite. If you spend time with a PDH, be sure to have plenty of food on hand, because the PDH will need to eat almost constantly. Any kind of palatable food is acceptable, but many PDHs express a fondness for what's commonly called “junk food.”
Avoidance of human blood. The scent of human blood has an intoxicating effect on the previously deceased. It arouses in them an intense need to feed, and they will feed upon anything close by, including the human who is bleeding. Humans who are in frequent contact with the previously deceased are advised to avoid any activity which could result in bloodshed. In addition, they should carry activated charcoal to soak up and block the scent of accidentally spilled blood, as well as a supply of food to offer the aroused PDH.
Section IV. Legal Considerations
Both the Boston City Council and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have enacted legislation designed to promote the harmonious coexistence of humans and the previously deceased. Before you interact with a PDH, know your rights, restrictions, and responsibilities:
It is illegal to assault the previously deceased. In the confusion immediately after the H-DED-1 incident, some humans mistakenly believed that they could attack the previously deceased with impunity. This was never the case, but legislators soon amended Massachusetts law to make it absolutely clear that assaulting any human—including the previously deceased—is a serious crime.
PDHs may not leave Designated Area 1 without a permit. Designated Area 1 (DA-1) was created to provide a home for Boston's paranormal population, including the previously deceased. Other Paranormal Americans may leave DA-1 if they pass through a checkpoint and show their state-issued identification card. PDHs, however, additionally require a permit issued to a non-previously-deceased escort who will remain with the PDH until the PDH returns to DA-1. Online permit application forms are available on the Mayor's website.
Note: A PDH who loses his or her permit while outside of DA-1 should immediately report back to DA-1 or to any of the state's other designated areas, including the secure werewolf retreats in Princeton, Athol, and Savoy, and apply for a replacement.
It is illegal to discriminate against properly documented PDHs. If a PDH enters an establishment such as a restaurant, entertainment venue, or store, the proprietor may ask the PDH to show his or her documentation. Upon presentation of a state-issued identification card and a valid permit, the proprietor must serve the PDH. Failure to do so will result in a fine of at least $500 per incident.
Remember: Understanding the previously deceased will make life better for all Bostonians.
Thanks so much for stopping by Nancy. Come back anytime!

I can't believe I hadn't heard of this series before today. The fact sheet is humorous to me, is there humor in the series as well?

Hi, everyone!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, thanks to Abigail for inviting me to do a guest post for ATUF. I'm really happy to be here, plus I had tons of fun writing this post.
To the commenters who enjoyed Deadtown--thanks so much! I hope you'll like Hellforged, too.
To the commenters who haven't yet read my series, I hope you'll take a look. There are links to the first chapter of each book just above the giveaway guidelines if you'd like to check them out. Or visit my website; they're under Books there.
I'll be back in a second to answer some individual comments. Again, I'm happy to be here!
@Beverly: I was an English professor who specialized in medieval literature. After I decided to jump off the tenure track, I found there wasn't a heck of a lot of demand for medievalists outside of academia. :) So I switched to freelance editing and writing. I still love the Middle Ages, though.
ReplyDelete@Bethany: Right now, I hold most of the background info for the series in my head. That approach works for a couple of books. But now that I know the series will continue, I need to start a series "bible" that records information (like this fact) sheet so I can refer to it when I need it.
@van: I love giving away books, so keep checking out my blog tour stops. :) For cover art, my editor asks for suggestions of scenes or images that might go on the cover before she goes to the cover conference, but that's the extent of my input. The next I hear about the cover is that it's done. However, after the cover conference for the next book (Bloodstone), my editor did mention that Vicky's face might appear on the next one. Vicky does seem to be gradually turning around. :)
@Tore: Writing a book seems like a huge, impossible undertaking unless you break it down into smaller steps. When I start a new novel, I begin with the characters and the main conflict in mind. Then I write a loose outline that hits the major plot points (inciting incident, plot point 1, midpoint, plot point 2, climax, and resolution). The outline breaks down the plot and gives me goals to write toward. Also, when I begin a novel, I always tell myself that the first scene I write won't necessarily be the finished book's first scene. There's so much pressure to write a good opening that it can be paralyzing to try to start there. So give yourself permission to write the opening later, in the second draft. It's easier to introduce a story when you know for sure what follows.
ReplyDelete@Stacy: Yes, she will. I really like Mab as a character. In Bloodstone (which will be out in the fall), Mab comes to Boston. It's been interesting to watch her when she's out of her element.
I really enjoyed Deadtown and am looking forward to Hellforged. Thanks for the Fact Sheet; it’s a great refresher for those of us ready to dive back into Designated Area 1! (Email in profile.)
ReplyDeleteHope your holidays were fun. This second book is a good read for the new year. Can't wait for it.
ReplyDeleteusignolc(at)yahooDOTcom
what a clever idea . I can see why PDH discrimination would be a problem. Note to self- always carry a box (or two) of Twinkies when visiting Deadtown.
ReplyDeleteNancy,
ReplyDeleteI have the first book in this series and I really enjoyed it. When I first got Deadtown, I wasn't sure it would be my cup of tea and it wasn't really, but I loved it anyway, so I guess you'd say.... I got a new cup, LOL

Hi Nancy!
ReplyDeleteDeadtown sounds like an interesting place to visit - is there anywhere in the world you'd like visit yourself? Or anywhere else you'd like to send Vicky? :-)
notanotherbookblog(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk
@Anne: Yes, there's humor sprinkled throughout the books. You can get a taste of it by taking a look at the opening chapters (links above).
ReplyDelete@LSUReader: Thanks! It was fun to write. I love imitating the tone of government publications. :)
@Sharon S: Twinkies would be an excellent strategy. Zombies love them, and unwrapping the cellophane with stiff fingers is distracting.
@justpeachy36: Sometimes I'm in the mood for Earl Grey, other times I want green tea with jasmine. It's all good. :) Glad you enjoyed Deadtown!
@Mel: Vicky spends part of Hellforged in Wales, training with her aunt and chasing down some demons there. It's a dream of mine to some day spend a month in a cottage on the Welsh coast for an intensive writing retreat. It's a beautiful country.
Hi Nancy!
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to read this series! It sold out pretty quickly at my store, but I think I'll have to order them now for sure!
I was wondering who your cover art designer is? I love your covers!

@Natasha: Tell them to order more copies right away! LOL. The cover artist for my books is Don Sipley, and I agree with you he does gorgeous work.
ReplyDelete@Kim: Bloodstone is the next book in the series, and it's scheduled to come out in October.
@Melissa: I go through phases when I read a lot of zombie novels--I've got to be in the mood for it. The Forest of Hands and Teeth is probably my favorite zombie-themed novel, and I also like Jonathan Maberry's work. Recently I enjoyed the Belfast setting of northern Irish author Wayne Simmons's novel Flu. On my TBR pile are Dust by Joan Frances Turner and The Reapers Are the Angels. For movies, I like some humor with my horror--it just seems to fit. Two of my favorite zombie movies are Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead.
@Manda: I went to college in Boston and lived in its commuterland for a while. It's been fun imagining monsters there. I'm going to Arisia in a couple of weeks and plan to take lots of photos of sites in the next book.
Nancy - Thanks again for dropping by. I LOVE your spoof post of Deadtown safety guidelines. It makes the setting seem so real, which I adore.

Hi Nancy,
ReplyDeleteLoved the memo. :) So, is the virus a result of an experiment or is it natural evolution of another disease?
heatwave96(at)hotmail.com
I had to grin at the politically correct terminology for the previously deceased.
ReplyDeleteDo you have plans to write a book that would be found in the YA section of the bookstore? YA books I've been reading lately, HUNGER GAMES or UGLIES series, are just spectacular in scope and definitely limited to the YA audience.
@Marianna: I didn't realize Frank had fans! He was fun to write. I like characters who don't take crap from anyone.
ReplyDelete@Llehn: How about this: "Just do it--the Muse only visits those who do the work."
@heatwave16: The origins of the virus become clear in book 3, Bloodstone. I can say this much now: It was an experiment of sorts, but not what you might expect.
@Vickie: The Hunger Games is such an amazing book. I wish it had been out when I was teaching high school English. I do have an idea on the back burner for a YA novel, but first I want to develop a dark historical fantasy (for adults) that I've been dying to write. And of course write the Deadtown novels I have under contract.
Thanks again to Abigail for inviting me to ATUF! I really enjoyed being here. And thanks also to everyone who's thinking of checking out my series. I hope you will!

And to Nancy - I've read the first book and it's very interesting but I have to read it two times to get everythink in order in my head and to understand the purport of the plot.
