My Thoughts:

Oh yeah, you heard that right. I am deliriously pleased to be able to share the cover for FOREVER with you guys today. Once again, it was designed by Christopher Stengel (my interview with him here). It’s coming out July 2011, which seems ominously close.-Maggie

I guess I was expecting this cover to be gold, but otherwise I can’t complain.  I also like how the blood spot was incorporated into the title even without an ‘i’.  If you want to get a signed copy, pre-order HERE

My Thoughts:

I cannot tell you how impressed/amazed/grateful I am for the folks at Razorbill, who were kind enough to allow me to have extensive input on the direction of this cover. It is really rare for a publisher to truly consider your input, and I will be forever thankful they gave me that opportunity, because i LOOOOOOVE This cover. - Mandy I love this cover too, almost as much as the description.  Notice the detailing on her calf…she’s a siren but I’m not sure what the design is supposed to be.

Book Description:

For two years, I have not killed.

But tonight, I stand in the shadows behind a tree, watching as a boy skips rocks on the lake.

He shouldn’t be here.

Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. The water calls to her, draws her in, forces her to sing her deadly song to unsuspecting victims. If she succumbs, she kills. If she doesn’t, the pain is unbearable. To keep herself and those she cares about safe, she shuts herself off, refusing to make friends or fall in love—again. Because the last time she fell in love with a boy, he ended up dead.

Then Lexi meets Cole. Against her better judgment, she finds herself opening up again, falling in love when she knows she shouldn’t. But when she’s offered the chance to finally live a normal life, she learns that the price she must pay to be free of her curse is giving him up.

In Ripple, Mandy Hubbard spins a sea-ravaged tale of melancholy beauty, and the choices one girl makes between land and waves, love and freedom, her future—and her heart.

Rage (Horseman of the Apocalypse #2) by Jackie Morse Kessler

Publication Date/Publisher: April 8th 2011 by Harcourt Graphia
Cover Artist: Sammy Yuen
Cover Source: Tez Says

Author Comments:

My Thoughts:

I absolutely love it! Now, I just received my author copies of HUNGER…and I have to say that the final cover, with all its gorgeous artwork and fonts and foil, is even more spectacular than the cover on the ARC, or the still image seen at places like Goodreads and online bookstores. So I’m positive that the final cover to RAGE will be even more phenomenal than this sneak peek. - Jackie I love how distinctive the covers for this series has been.  The image alone identifies RAGE as a HOTA book.  It looks dark and disturbing, just like I’m sure the book will be.

Previous Book in the Series:

Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #1)

Rage (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #2)

Book Description:

Missy didn’t mean to cut so deep. But after the party where she was humiliated in front of practically everyone in school, who could blame her for wanting some comfort? Sure, most people don’t find comfort in the touch of a razor blade, but Missy always was . . . different.

That’s why she was chosen to become one of the Four Horsemen Apocalypse: War. Now Missy wields a different kind of blade—a big, brutal sword that can cut down anyone and anything in her path. But it’s with this weapon in her hand that Missy learns something that could help her triumph over her own pain: control.

A unique approach to the topic of self-mutilation, Rage is the story of a young woman who discovers her own power, and refuses to be defeated by the world

Well, here it is – the cover art for the first book in the YA Dragonfire series. This trilogy focuses on Zoë becoming the Wyvern, around the time she turns 16. Book Description:

Revenge. It's all Grayson Spencer wants. Christophe dit Menart, a human with dark magical powers, destroyed the life she loved. She wants the pleasure of killing him, no matter the cost to her. If not for Durian, a dangerously sexy demon fiend charged with keeping Christophe alive, she would have succeeded, too. Now, she's certain all hope is gone. But he has a plan and an offer she can't resist...
Durian has spent his life as a trained and sanctioned assassin. His duty: to enforce the laws against demons harming humans. He's always prided himself on staying out of the fray, carrying out his orders and honoring his fealty to his warlord, but never getting attached. Never until Grayson, a spunky and determined woman clearly gifted with magic herself. He convinces her to swear fealty to him so he can protect her and teach her to use her magic to taste the revenge she so desperately wants.
They're soon bound together in a forbidden desire--a dangerous passion that calls into question Durian's oath of loyalty to his warlord. When he refuses to return her to Christophe, his disobedience threatens to inflame the tumultuous war between demons and the magekind. Can they--and their love--survive?

I received a surprise package in the mail on Monday.  There was no name on the return address and I had no clue who it was from or even what is was.  It was sort of rectangular in shape, so I figured it had to be a book.

IMG_1400 After opening the outer packaging, and tearing through a padded inner wrapping, I pulled out a very old, battered leather book.  The leather was cracked and curling at the edges, and the sender had used a rubber band to keep the cover from falling off.  In faded gold letters, the spine identified it as Shakespear’s Comedies.

Um…What?

Then I looked back in the package and found a folded note:

Hi Abigail,

Thank you for helping me with this, I think if we all post pics on Facebook of the clues we find, then together we can solve this mystery.

Nightshade (Nightshade, #1)My brain finally started working again and I remembered the super cool publicity campaign that Campfire was doing for the even cooler book NIGHTSHADE by Andrea Cremer.  They said they were sending something else, I guess I shouldn’t have expected more flowers and flash drives :) Back to the book.  Inside the front cover was the following message handwritten in flourishing script:

He who I refuse
to name makes a mockery of our invitation
His chosen answer is to cast
us as unnamed extras in one
of his libelous texts. He serves as a
warning to any of us that would

Two places were marked in the book with torn page bookmarks.  On each of the pages, a swirling, tribal like pattern encircled specific words and letters:

Book Description

SOME SECRETS COME BACK TO HAUNT. OTHERS COME TO KILL...

Justine Jones has lived her life as a fearful hypochondriac until she's lured into the web of a mysterious mastermind named Packard. He gifts her with extraordinary mental powers-dooming her to fight Midcity's shadowy war on paranormal crime in order to find the peace she so desperately craves.

But now, serial killers with unheard-of skills are terrorizing the most powerful beings in Midcity, including mastermind Packard - and his oldest friend and worst enemy, Midcity's new mayor, who has the ability to bend matter itself to his will.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men . . . one on a journey of redemption, and the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

 Review

Urban fantasy is a genre largely dominated by vampires and werewolves.  Occasionally we get a witch or a demon, or rarer still a creature mined from a more obscure mythology.  Apparently Carolyn Crane didn’t get the memo because you won’t find a single fang or furry fellow in her Disillusionists Trilogy.  Like Mind Games before it, DOUBLE CROSS is an urban fantasy with a retro comic book twist featuring a ragtag band of crime fighters suffering from crippling paranoia.  Different? Absolutely.  But in the hands of Carolyn Crane, never has being crazy been so much fun.

Tricked into lifelong minionhood by the (villainous?) mastermind Packard in Mind Games, DOUBLE CROSS picks up with the same motley crew of hypochondriacs, gamblers, and fatalists turned unwilling super heroes as they begin working for Midcity’s new Mayor by ‘zinging’ their particular psychosis into Hicap (X-men types) criminals and disillusioning (essentially resetting them back to neutral) them.  If you’ve already read Mind Games, you’ll slip right back into this world and these characters like a spandex jumpsuit.  If you haven’t, Crane does a decent job of bringing newbies up to speed, but you’ll have missed out on a lot of crucial back story and character development if you jump right into DOUBLE CROSS.

Whether you’re new to this series or not, I’m sure you’ll once again be shocked at how fun it is to be a voyeur amongst these characters in the throes of their deepest fears and neurosis.  Throughout DOUBLE CROSS, Crane dropped little paranoid thoughts for her characters into random scenes to remind the reader how close they always are to falling back under that fear.  It’s fascinating and perversely funny.

And let’s not forget the love triangle between Justine, Packard and Otto.  Initially, Justine was powerfully drawn to Packard, but his betrayal drove her into the arms of the man she had idolized for years.  Otto shares Justine’s Vein Star paranoia (you can’t imagine the conversational foreplay these two have about brain aneurisms), and she lives for his adoration.  Packard, not one to back down, constantly challenges her to examine her feelings for Otto and compare them to the intensity she felt with him.   Meanwhile, the animosity between Packard and Otto comes to a head as their disturbing history is finally revealed.

To sum up, DOUBLE CROSS has accomplished what few books ever do: it blows its excellent predecessor out of the water.  Crazy characters, maniacal villains, twisted romance, and an ending that is scream out loud good.  I was thinking about it for days afterwards and I still can’t believe the devious double cross (yeah, the title works on many levels).  Part of me seriously hates Carolyn Crane for leaving me like this to wait in agony for the conclusion to The Disillusionists Trilogy when it comes out sometime next year.  I just hope my Glory Hour lasts till then.

Sexual Content: A graphic sex scene.  A semi graphic sex scene.

My Rating:

Marta Acosta, author of the Casa Dracula series, is back on ATUF today after being one of my first ever interviews almost a year ago.  The fourth book in the series, HAUNTED HONEYMOON, has just been published and Marta let me pick her brain about funny vampires, free books, Spike, and all things Casa Dracula.   See below to win your own copy of the book.

image

Marta Acosta lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She was a feral reader, roaming the stacks of the public library. She received a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing from Stanford University and has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, the Contra Costa Times, and Spaces Magazine. Marta lives with her husband and son and their crazy dog.   An avid gardener, she likes independent films, funny novels, loud music and lively conversations. She’s always happy to hear from readers, even the ones who point out typos.

Interview

ATUF: You’ve recently posted not one but two full novels (Nancy’s Theory of Style & The Shadow Girl of Birch Grove) online as free reads.  Which means that, in addition to being super generous and/or insane, you must be on to something because The Shadow Girl has since been bought by Tor Books and will be published in the not so distant future.  So do you recommend this type of philanthropy for other authors?

image MA: Hi, Abigail! I think the "or insane" applies. I'm an author who wants my stories to be read, as simple as that. I was unhappy that Nancy's Theory of Style was no longer available in print only a few months after its release. I don't know why this book just sunk out of sight when it's funny and touching, a great frothy read.  (Ya think the cover with a roll of frickin toilet paper might have had something to do that that?) As for Shadow Girl, the manuscript was with editors and I'd been waiting and waiting to hear something.  My feeling about both stories was, "Well, I'll just take my ball and go play somewhere else."
I posted them as free reads because I trust in my stories and I trust in readers.  I knew that once people had a chance to read  Nancy, they'd love the book. The same with Shadow Girl.  I think it had over 26,000 reads before I took it off Scribd.com. Nancy's had 4,000 reads in just a few weeks.
I don't know that posting free reads helps book sales. I think if having your story read is more important to you than being published, shared sites are a great resource.

ATUF: As I mentioned in my recent review of Happy Hour At Casa Dracula, you broke the cardinal rule in urban fantasy: you cannot be funny.  Authors can beat their heroine to within an inch of her life, make her love life look like something that even Jerry Springer would be shocked at, and have her dog run over by a bus full of demons, but they cannot be funny.  What do you have to say for yourself?

imageMA: I wasn't writing straight urban fantasy, which is generally all action and fights; I was writing comedy! And it's a cardinal rule of comedy that you must be funny. When I first wrote Happy Hour at Casa Dracula, I'd never even heard the term "urban fantasy." Since then the sub-genre has exploded and books that were originally in other sections are being repackaged as UF. What I really like about UF is that it's a flexible category.  It can include thrillers, mysteries, drama, romance, and even comedy, which is great since I like my characters to have fun, banter, flirt, party, etc.

ATUF: HAUNTED HONEYMOON is the forth book in the Casa Dracula series and marks a radical departure in terms of the cover art.  I’m in love with the flirty Milagro and the blue/black cover wash.  This is the the kind of imagery that I think should have branded the series all along. What are your thoughts on the cover and do you know who the artist is?

image MA: I agree with you! I've been fighting for better book covers from the start and I wanted something that conveyed the fun, sexy, hip feel of the stories.  People say you can't judge a book by its cover, but covers are what draw the reader and it doesn't matter how many great reviews you get if no one picks up the book. I think this cover finally gets it right and I'm thrilled with it and the new color scheme. The artist is Elena Dudina and you can see more of her work at her deviantART page.

ATUF: You’ve maintained that the Casa Dracula series is a comedy of manners with vampires.  For new readers, how exactly do those elements blend together?

image MA: The stereotypes of vampires as beautiful, wealthy and sophisticated seemed to mesh perfectly with comedy about social class.  If vamps were all that and a bag of pommes frites, it seemed to reason that they'd be terrible snobs. In a comedy of manners, humor, clever banter, and skewering ideas about social class are the most important parts of the story.  My bright, but aimless character Milagro gets involved with these successful vamps, and they treat her like a trashy gold-digger.
I like to think of my stories as delightful desserts.  Desserts require technique and a deft hand, and they should seem effortless.
That said, Haunted Honeymoon is a little more plot-driven, with action, but the humor is still there. People have told me the series gets better with each book, and I'm not going to disagree with them since I love, love this story!  I finally give my heroine Milagro the happy ending she's earned.

ATUF: I asked you before about a dream movie cast for the Casa Dracula series and you couldn’t answer because a few actresses were already looking at the books.  Are there any developments on the film front?

image MA: No, no developments. People always ask about movies, but the reality is that very few movies get made every year, but thousands and thousands of books are published every year. Lots of times you hear about books being optioned, but the option can pay one dollar for a two-year option. I had one offer like that and turned it down.

ATUF: And while we’re on the topic of book adaptations, what do think about the flurry of titles being optioned for both film and TV.  Is there one you are particularly looking forward to or dreading?

MA: I never pay any attention to options because options are cheap and plentiful.  The vast majority of stories optioned are never made into films.

ATUF: So what’s next for Milagro & Co.?  Is Nancy going to be getting another book? Are you working on something else brand new?

image MA: What's next for me is getting my editor's notes for The Shadow Girl of Birch Grove and working on that. I'm excited to be going to Tor and working with a great editor there. Then I'll be focusing on the adult gothic I'm writing.  I hope readers will also like my more serious writing.  Then I'll see what happens! Everything is quite up in the air.

ATUF: Your blog Vampire Wire is famous for ending every post with Gratuitous Videos Of The Day clips.  Since we’re both self proclaimed Spike fans, can you dig us up a couple James Marsters clips that you love?

MA: Oh, you're making me do the work? You should be finding them on your own, but here are a few I like.

MA:  Thanks for having me here at All Things Urban Fantasy, Abigail! Readers can find out more about my books and get free reads at my sites.

As the only human to survive vampire infection, Milagro de Los Santos has become quite a celebrity among the blood-drinking elite. Too bad the perks of her condition—increased strength, super-fast healing—don’t pay her condo fees. There are other complications too. She’s feeling guilty about her fling with enigmatic Vampire Council member Ian Ducharme, and pining for her ex-fiancé, Dr. Oswald Grant . . . the fabulous man whose kiss changed her life. It’s when Milagro — irked by Ian’s attentions to his neighbor — travels to London and enjoys a sexy flirtation of her own, that the blood really hits the fan.

Suddenly, those around her are dying gruesome deaths and Milagro’s being interrogated. Who would kill to set her up as a murder suspect? Milagro just wants to turn back the clock and have another chance to make things right, but no sooner has she escaped to Oswald’s ranch than an accident obliterates her memory. Will the murderer come after her now? And will amnesia spark a romantic do-over with Oswald—or will she make all the same mistakes before she ever gets to say "I do"?
