New Feature: Review Rating System

You asked for a review rating system (or at least those of you who took my poll), you get a rating system!   Special thanks to The Book Vixen for suggesting bats!

Rating System

imageimageimageimageimage Near Perfect - Buy two copies: one for you and one for a friend.
imageimageimageimage Excellent - Loved it! Buy it now & pre-order the sequel.
imageimageimage Good - A fun read with minor flaws. Maybe read an excerpt before buying.
imageimage Okay – Somewhat disappointing with significant flaws. Library/swap/borrow if you want.
image Awful - I finished it, but I vomited out of my eyes a little. Run!

From here on out, all the books I review on this site will get a rating of 1-5 bats.  I contemplated adding half-bats but I’m against cruelty to animals (plus I didn’t feel like cutting the little suckers up), so 1-5 it is :)

What do you think?  Do you use ratings on your reviews? How helpful are they for you and your readers?

  2. The bats are cool. I'll be interested to see how you feel about doing this. I don't have a number rating right now. I keep thinking I should, but so far I haven't added one. It seems like it would be SOOOOO hard to pick a rating like this for each book. Perhaps I'm just a wimp:)

  3. Hi Abigail,
Yes, I chafe at the idea of using a scoring system myself, BUT readers do find it helpful. I always assume that anyone who bothers to check my reviews are crazy busy, and sometimes all they have time to do is check the rating.

I know that big-time critics deign to rate books this way, but I grumble myself when bloggers won't offer up some type of scoring system. I usually skim reviews that are longer than three paragraphs (that's my other beef... rambling reviews), and if there's no rating system, it takes too much effort to figure out what the reviewer thought about the book. This rating system is a good call.

  4. Awesome, you went with the bats!

I like a rating system. I like to read a review to get the reader's thoughts and impressions but I like to know where the book stands. I like a 1-5 rating system best because it's simple and it seems to be the standard out there (Goodreads, Amazon, B&N).

  5. I'm sure I'll anguish over assigning ratings to a few books, and I may end up cutting the little guys in half after all when it comes to a few titles :) Thanks for the feedback.
